THE k, E£. l.l’i'l I T
Si It I /. .
One day last week, while sad and
drearj',
As we wended, weak, and wean 7 ,
Across the unswept floor;
We heard, at first, a gentle tapping,
Then it became an earnest rapping.
At our sanctum door.
“Come in!" we said; while yet he
pondered,
And in silence we still wondered
What for us could be in store:
Then the door-bolt gently turning,
lu he walked. Our cheek was- burn
ing !
Thoughts of crimson gore.
“--Ire you the man w'ho does the
writing t”
(What word will this but
fighting?
Quickly thought we, o’er and o’er).
*‘Sir, we are,” we gently 'old him,
Nodding to the boys to bold him.
If he tried to beat us sore.
“Then you'll please give me a credit
Opposite that little debit,
For too dollars more.
I like your paper, and will take it
As long as you will strive to make it
As good as it Las been before.’’
We jumped! He dodged!Thus we
missed him, *
Or we surely would have kissed Idm,
No matter ifthe boys did roar: •
So seldom treated in this manner,
We felt inclined to sing hosannah !*
Only this and nothing more.
ll'ouldn't llfciprofate.
The following, from the Fairfield
(Me.) Chton cle, is neatly done, and
has wide application outside of Maine.
Ho was the manager of a church fair,
undone morning he walked into the
newspaper office, and said:
“Want an i'.em this morning?
“Of course," replied the editor.—
Whereupon the visitor laid the fol
lowing note upon the table :
Tuc ladies of the—Street Church
will give a festival at their vestry
hall, next Friday evening. Literary
and musical entertainments will be
provided, and a supper will be served
to all who desire. The ladies in
charge of the affair have much expe
rience in such matter, and are
sure to provide a good time. The
admission will be only fifteen cell's,
and it is certain at no one can
spend that amount ioa better ail vant
age. Be sure and go, and take yun
friends,
When'dhe editor read it he said ;
“0, I see; an advertisement.”
“No ; not an advertisement. We
]'refer to have it in the local column,’
replied the manager.
And seeing that the editor looked
skeptical, he continued :
“It will interest a great many of
your readers, and help a good cause;
besides, we have spent so much mon
ey getting up onr entertainment, that
we cannot afford to advertise it with
out increasing the tickc-8. In such
n matter as this, we ought to be able
to help each other.”
“Well," said the editor, “If it goes
into the locals, I suppose you would ]
reciprocate by reading a little notice l
in your church uext Sunday?”
The visiting briber asked what'
notice, and the editor wrote and han
ded him the following:
The Weekly Chronicle, for the com*
ing year, will be the be-t and cheap
est family paper in Maine. Its pro
prietor has had much experience, and
has all the helps which a large outlay
of money can procure, ilis paper
has a larger circulation than any oh
cr published in the county and is to
he furnished at only §2. It is certa n
that no one can spend that amount
to a better advantage. Be sure to
take the Chronicle and subscribe for
your friends.
The manager hemmed and hesitat.
cd, and then said, solemnly, that he
“doubted whether it would be judic
ious to read such a notice,’’ suggest
that, if it was printed, copies of "it
might be distributed at the door of
the vestry on the evening of the en
tertainment.
“Yes,” said the editor, “but it
would attract more attention in the
middle of a sermon. It will interest
a large number of your congregation
and help a good cause, and besides,
so much money is spent upon the j
Chronicle that I don't see how the j
owner can afford to print handbills
to advertise it without increasing the
subscription price. In such a matter
as this we ought to be williag to help
each other.”
Then the manager saw the situa-!
tion, and withdrew.
Seeking information of a German
friend, we asked him: “My friend
how long have you boon married ?’’
