Several papers thru out the state
are still speaking of our Senator, the
Hon. Jno. T. Clarke, in connection
with ’.he presidency of the Senate.—
Our legislature will find when it
meets, no abler nan than Judge
Clarke, nor one batt6r capacitated to
fill the high position with credit to
himsolf and the state. Of course, the
eleventh district wou'd be ptond to
see her Senator adorning the chair.
Fire in Vacsii
Tne Drown House at M..eon, to-;
gether with tbs stores under it and
one or two adjoining bui dings, was
destrjved by tire on last Satuiday
night. The fire originated in a res
taurant between the Brown House
and the National Hotel. The house
was valued at SIOO,OOO, insured for
$40,000. The furniture was partly
saved and had Su insurance of $5,000.
Tho fire is supposed to have been the
work of an incendiary. The bouse
will probably bo rebuilt.
Bro. Sawtell.jof theCu'hheit Appeal,
"struck ik" in tho editorial about nur
Georgia members of Congress in his
Inst issue. The fulsome gush that is
justaow slopping over from Wash,

getting quite nauseating, over t>>
those who don’t know, us we di., that
it comm from persons who hold small
positions through the influence cl
cumbers whom they wish to retain n

slender purchase on tne public teat. —

to call tn our apothecary for some
civet.
We justice, :he last issuo of the
Early County Neics, a letter from Hon.

a reply to one Mr. l’owell had writ
ten to M’- Smith asking it he w>uld
be a -candidate for re-election Mr.
Sufit'l leplies in effect that he would
iiko to continue longer in Congress
and witness the completion of the
good work that has been inaugurated
s':nee be has been a member. The
lettir.is candid nuu manly, and loaves
r.i) room for doubt u to Mr. Smith’s
wishes in the matter.
Two ngio6 and a while man were
hung by a tnab in Huntsville, Alh

The whi-e man was a butcher and the
r:egroe had boon stealing cattle and
billing them to him. The murdered
man had ihieatencd to prosecute them.
The white man hind the negroes to
do the murder. They were all hung
on one limb. They confessed their
guilt.
Nothing decisive or important since
our last i.ssue in regard to the Anglo*

seemingly, expecting it.

Daws on is a town of 1,500 infcsbi

fiourishing female school, second to
none in the state in 'he thoroughness
of its course of instruction and the ef

sides, there are a number of excellent
private schools. It has twenty-four
stoics,— an extensive car factory, with

a carriage factory,—a wagon factory
two steam mills, —two steam cotton
gins, etc., etc. Spring begins here
about the li st of March, and winter
about the fi. st of N.-vemher, — winter*

is a sandy loam with a clay lotto.■ .
Farmers raise cotton, corn, sugar
cane, potatoes, whea', oa'a, rye, bar
icy, rice, mill-1, ground-peas, cow
peas, chufas, apples, pears, figs,
grapes, etc , etc. Good land partly
cleared and improved cau le bad at
from three to five dollars per acre ;
plenty of good land as yet uncultivated
lor want of force to do it. Comfcrtn
ble houses can be rented in town for
from five to ten dollars per month.—
Wages of farm laborers from sixty
to one hundred dollars a year, with
rations.
Any sort of a factoiy for the making
nf laim or hrusebold implements - r
the manufacture of cotton would do
well here.
The health of the cor.nty is re
maikahle good. Ten years ago, we
had malarial diseases, but they have
almost entirely disappeared. Thi* is a
better climate lor invalids than Floii
da, for, whi’e possessing all the ad
vantages of thai climate, we have not
here the excessive moisture in the
atmosphere that is such a drawback
to places further south.
Our soil is rot naturally \eiy rich,
