offer and go up* to witness the fair

say that there will be ample accom
modations on the ground for all who

Apologetic.
An apology is due our readers for
the imperfect manner our paper has
been printed for some time past. —
i Though no fault of ours, wc got a
! bad lot of paper sometime ago which
we were compelled to work oil. Be
sides, some of our type is badly worn.
These things we expect to remedy
just as soon as posible, and hope our
patrons will bear with us until we
can do so. We intend just as soon
as we can, to give them a paper prin
ted as well as any in the state.
Musquitoes.
Musquetoes are very musical little j
animals and affectionate in their dispo- i
sition. They have made their ap
pearance in some parts of the city
and'arc giving gratuitous concerts
to the little folks. Those of our
citizens who arc not fond of these
little pets are advised to allow no
stagnant water to stand on their
premises. If this is closely watched
after we will not be troubled
much with musquetoes this summer.
Remember that a barrel ot stagnant
water will cause hundreds of these
pests to be raised at your house.
“Just to Please the Boys." —AVe
have just received the above new and
beautiful serio-comic song, composed
by the popular song writer, VV. A.
Huntley. It will become immensely
popular with the ladies, we presume,
as they are ever ready to please the
boys. Price 35 cents per copy. Will
be sent by mail to any address by the
publisher, F. AV. Ilelmick, 130 W.

, Weather and Crops.
From every part of the county comes
the fliost cheering reports of the
progress of our farmers, whose pleas
ant faces are not often seen in our
city of late. We are having the fin
est weather imaginable for farm work,
and the crops are all clean oi grass
and weeds, and the prospect lot a
good yield is very encouraging. A
rain, however, is badly needed just at
this time, though the indications are
that we will have a good shower be
fore we go to press. Our planters
generally are well up with their work,
and we don’t remember to luive ever
seen a fairer prospect. Although
money is sensibly scarce, yet v\ e be
lieve our people are in a fairer way
to independence than at any time
since the war. We bash our belief on
the fact that the hard times restrain
many from the ruinous practice oi
the credit system. It is generally
admitted, we believe, that our peo
pie are usually cautious about con
tracting debts, but they cannot be
, too much so. The opinion is gam
i ing ground, too, among out tanners.
that we can make many crops, hith
| erto forgotten or neglected m the
I cotton mania, very profitable. 0
! can raise, on our farms, every thing
I necessary in the way ol edibles. As
an evidence of this, notice the hue
. patches of wheat and other grain
throughout the entire county, apart
of which is now being harvested.
I
Crop Report.
AVe have received the crop report
for April from Dr. Janes, Commis
sioner of Agriculture, which shows
an increase in the area planted in
corn of three percent, preparation of
soil six per cent,, and the stand four
per cent., better than an average,—
The oat crop is put at an average of
97 per cent, for the State at large.—
The area planted in sugar cane is in
creased nine per cent, and the stand
four per cent. The area of sorghum is
decreased fifteen per cent. Chufas
are reported to lie growing favor
as a crop for hogs. The area of cot
ton planted is said to be one per cent,
increase over last. The report is.
quite complimentary to the State.
PEARLY GATES.

Where the pearly gates will never,

And meet the sacramental hosts,
Who worship at God’s throne?

And say to troubles farewell ;
With all the blood-bought sons of
light.
I’ll with my Savior dwell.

Auddrink of life’spure crystal stream,
And sing of Jesus’ love to me,

And cast it down at Jesus' feet,
My friends who linger on life’s shore,
Expecting soon to greet.

Editors Journal — Gents;—Below I
hand you the arrival of two noted old
people, Janies Horsely and Elizebitli
Horsely. They arrived at Dawson on
Friday, the 17th instant. James
Horsely iia lived to the good old age
of 84 years and 4 months, and Eiizr-
Lith Horsely i- 82J years old. Strange
to say that this old lady can rau her
Bible without speetielas. She has
been reading the “Good Book’’ almost
daily for three years without the aid
of glasses. These old people are en
joying good health and are active. -
They live near the lino of Macon and
Schley counties. They rode 14 miles
in a buggy and took the cares for
Dawson. They make a trip to this
county every year. They have been
mairied 59i years, and have lived
happily together ever sine*’, and dur
ing that time they have not been sep
arate! more than 15 days a* a time.
These good old people have been
members of the Baptist Church for
58 years. Youra very t.uly,

Editors Dawson Journal :—l have
thought that a few dots from this sec
tion would be interesting to some of
vour many readers, so I liavo decid
ed to write and remind you of a
friend who wishes you and especially
your paper, well. Having resided in
old Terrell nearly all of my life, I
have become very much attached to
the “Banner county oi the state. ’
There is no part oftne country I yearn
ior so much as that where resides my
old associates, although this is a good
section to live. Young peoplo are ns
nun.etous as blackberries, and wed
dings are quite fteqttent iu these
parts since Christmas, and, Messrs.
Editors, it is die greatest county ior
balls you ever saw, espec aly in the
winter time. Picnics have begun
and they are generally well attended
by ibo young folks and older heads
toe. After a caroful observation, lam
proud to report crops in a splendid
state of cultivation, and the prospects
for an abundant yield were nevor
more flattering. Wheat is fine, though
seme complain oi mst. Our farmers
have commenced to harvest that grain. ;
Oats are good, and corn and cotton
are doing as-well as could be expect
ed, consideringt he cool mornings of
the past month.
