The Condition of Our County.* The General Presentments of the Grand Jury, published in this issue ate interesting and gratifying reading to i! good citizen*. Under our system of county government, Gnrud Jul ios ar very important funetiouariea with Ia great deal of rosDonsibility devolving j spun them. Beside* the duty of looking alt- r tire public morale, and ! reporting and bringing to punishment j vi haters of the law, theirs is the itn ' ii'irUnt, responsible and aiduous du ty of looking after the conduct of all county affairs, and the actions and do ings of ftii county officer*. Wheat all harvested, but little t> rash ed out as yet. That grain was dam aged by rust some though a majority of our farmers have made plenty to do them. Oats are fine as a general thing, and the fruit crop was never more promising at this season of the year. I guess editors will grow fat as the black-berry crop is'now in. More anon, , Subscriber. John Caldwell Kills his AVife, His Wife’s Sister, Three Children, and Then Kills Himself. j From Mr. Lithe Robert*, deputy Sheriff of this county, who, on Tues day, returned from near the scene of action, we learn the following partic ulars of a homHe tragedy that, was enacted near Davidson’s mill, in | Sumter county, on last Monday: l John Caldwell killed his wife, — his wife’s sister, three of his children, ranging in age from 4 to 10 years, . and then himself. He brained his : victims with a grubbing hoe. Their | brains were scattered all over the i lloor and walls of his l onse. One daughter, whom he tried to kill, es caped and rar. to a field where a brother was at work. These two arc the only members of the family left. After killing all these persons, Cald well jumped into the well twice in an attempt to kill himself. He then got on the house and jumped off’ This failing to k ll him, he climbed to the | top of the gin house and jumped off'. I fru-tu n> hi; skill and killing! him. His son, who had returned j fri’ixi the field, saw him just before he jumped from the gin-house, and im- plored him not to leap. The six bodies were buried, at Providence Church, on Tuesday eve ning,—a large concourse of people in attendance. The whole community is, of course, much shocked and ex cited. Mr. Caldwell, wc learn, was a man of about middle age, in easy circum stances and of good character. He had long t een a memberof the Prim itive Bapt-st Church, and was well liked by his acquaintances. No cause is known for his horrible deeds. It is supposed, of course, that he must have become suddenly crazed from some cause. These are tne fac s, as we get them from Mr. Roberts. Since th<- above was iu type, we have heard further particulars. Mr. Caldwell’s sister-in-law, whom he kill ed, was named Francis Mitchell. The children killed were Allen, aged 11) years; Robert, aged 6, years and Lyda, aged ■2- years. Mr. Caldwell had eight children, three of whom w ere absent from home at the time of the killing, and one of whom es caped, as above sta’ed. He first killed his wife and children in the house with a smoothing iron, and then went out in the yard and killed his sister-in-law with a hoe. Flaring scissors at R. J.
