The last named, Miss Hemphill, of Dougher ty county, took the prize for the best read c imposition, as well as fur the highest standing in her class. Fifty-two Cabbages from one Stalk. j In a recent issue of this paper, we i stated that Uncle Luke Roberts of ; 11;is place had raised 30 head of cah j bages on one stalk. That statement ! was doubted by some ol our citizens. On Friday last Mr. Roberts exhibit ed a stalk from which fifty / two cab bages had been taken. They were from the size of a hen egg to a man’s ! fist, and were perfectly sound 'and j good. Wo saw the stalk and know that til’s statement is correct. Variety unknown. History Fails to Record it. The boys tell a good story on one of our prominent M. D's Ha wore If long-tailed duster to the Nelson In stitute on the night of the exhibition, and ‘ook a scat immediately in front of some mischievous school boys, one of whom had killed a leather-wing bat and carefully put it into the physician’s duster pocket, where he usually carries his Stultz 4 A tobacco. After'the lapse of a few.minutes the venerable Doctor put his hand into his pocket for a chew of the filthy weed, and the boys dec-are that they saw the bat’s head go into the doc tor’s mouth, but what became of it, history fails to record. .wm % Closing Exercises—O. O. Nelson Institute. The commencement exercises of the above named school closed with a drama ic perform nee on last Thurs diy night. There was a largo audi ence in attendance which seemed to be highly entertained during the eve' ning. The stage was tastefully ar ranged and the young ladies acquit ted themselves handsomely, Which re flected great ciedit upon their faiili fut tutor Miss Eliza Janes. If there was a balk upon the stage we failed to detect it. The young ladies had beau thoroughly drilled and so well did they play their lespective parts hat the gray haired sire c- u and but smile with admiration. Wo had intended to witness the exhibition and then'witicise the different chat actors, but, where ail did so well, it it would bo art injustice to do so. We did not attend the social party given at the Institute on Friday night, but learn that a large crowd was present, and that the evening passed off very pleasantly. The course of study in this institution is thorough, aud our citizens should assist the principal in building up one of the best temale schools in the state. Correspondence. Dawson, Ga., June 26, 1878. Messrs. Editors: Believing that vou wou'.'i like to paoinh a short report from the 3rd District of this countv, I will give you a few lines tor’your valuable paper. On yesterday 'I visited a good portion of t ie 3id, and lad to report that crops, geti genarallv, re looaing well, enru especially. I find that plenty of corn is planted to sup ply ( l,e farmers if the season combines favor able. Cotton is looking very well, and is large enough to make a good crop if the abominable eatterpill-r does no begin its ravages on the tender weed Yon may sav what you Please about Mr, \t , g.tn’s c .hba.es and large collards. Ue itiii have them, for I had the plea-uie of feasting on one of his large, white head cab bage.o, which was as bard as any cabbage ev. r dripped here. As we returned, t learned that Mi. Jos £. Hunter was seriously ill, bur was * little bet ter than he had been, fie is one of the best farmers and moat, influential citizens in the 3rd district, and it would boa great loss to the entire county should he tail to recover We hope soon to tee him out again. Yours truly, 8. The Laboratory of the System. The stomach is the laboratory of the system, in widen certain mysterious processes are constantly going on. — These result in the production of that wonderful vivifying agent the blood which in a state of health rushes la den with the elements cf vitality to the remotest parts of the system. — Isut when the stomach is semi-paral yzed bydyspepsi', blood manufacture Is carried on imperfect[y, the circula tion grows thin and sluggish, and the sy-tem *uff rs in consequence. More over, in-liges'ien reacts upon the liver and bowels, rendering the first slug gish and the 'otter constipated. The brain also suffers by sympathy, and sick headaches, sleeplessness and nerv ous symptoms are ei.gender-d. Uos tetter’s S’nmach Bitters reform this state of things, gvs permanent tone and regularity to the stomach and its associate organs, the bowels find liver, and ensurescomplete nouiishment and increased vigor of tlio system. It is the most papular as well as the most efficient anti-dyspeptic and ton c in America- J free masonry. A lew Thoughts Concerning the Mjstir- Brotherhood. For ■ ver five thousand years it has been the cuetorn of Masons to meet on the 24;h of June in each year to cele brate, in a becoming manner, the an niversary of or.o of the great ancient models of Masonry, viz: John the Baptist. These annti 1 festive occa sions, though they have at times been perverted, nnd a degree of intemper ance and debauchery indulged in by a few unworthy members of the fra ternity ; yet, as a general thing, the custom has greatly enhanced the interest of the order end tended in a largo degree, to strengthen the tie of friendship and brotherhood in thiii connectii n as members of the same qroat mystic hand, and especially, in '.lie common social relations of life.— T'e history of Masonry in all the past egoa of 'lift world lias clearly demon strated tho fart that those annual so cial festivities of the fraternity have done much to unite the members of the order closer in the bonds oi friendship and charity, and tend to dissipate that fi nilLh principle of selfishness 'hat is a stench in the nos trils of every tru patriot and lover of humanity. Masomy, that has exist ed from alums* time immemorial, un like most of modem ins ittitions, has been streng'hened, promoted a>il built up by its members fostering in their feolinira the principle'that seems to be the controlling eleim ut in most of modern institutions, as well as be ing possessed by most individual members of society. It does not re quire a clove obseiVer to notice in these days the tendency to selfishness by our publ c ins itutions, our busi ness and professional men, and by l itizer.s generally in all the relations of life, and even by the ancieut and mystic brotherhood. Look at the so called leligious institutions of the present day; how little they seem to he concerned about the welfare of the human rvee, and the building up and promoting tho cause of their Heavenly Master. Look at the cor ruption and inconsist-ncy practic' and these days by professed patriots wiio engage in paity strife ostensU ly from love of country, but really to pro mo e their own saltish ends. Look i-t the business man as we find him these days engaged in professional, mo.o itlle, i>r any other business r - l.iti ms, what dees he care for Hie g.„.l of his neighbor, how much thought dees he tiOstow on the sub ject if proinnting the -general good of his race? D< os he even consider the question for a moment, hovv he could use a little of his tm-ans, time, or in fluence to alleviate the soiraws of the off! cted, and m ike bis follow-man happy, and cause him to have in bis own bosom a consciousness oi having (ione his part in endeavoring to ac.e- • liorate die condition of the human race? Nay, instead of being in pos sra-ion of these prinoip’esfhat shofild be the main ingredients in the c’loir tor of ( very true citizen ; he, the rath er studies, by endeavoring to find out what may be the necessities of his fallows, the best method of using his Gieiits. influence and position in wrenching (rum them their onlj nouns of sustaining life itself, much less fhe means of making themselves and faintly happy, so that they could per f rra their part, as was intended by our (Jieator, in the great drama of life. Again, while these denizens of the community are using their inge nuity at.d moans to pttiuo-o their own intetest in the downfall of others, they talk largely of law, and justice, and even honor, as noble ingredients in one’s character to ease their Own conscience, wo suppose, from the smarting efF-cts ol a knowledge of having defrauded their feJowmnn of his limited means of sustaining him self sn! family. Whet we have said in regard to individual business men, will apply, in a large degree, to the maneuvering* of the different iusti tuious oi the present day. The mot to of all s r euis to be “self,” without any regard to the good of others, or the importance of doing what we cat) to build up the general interest of so \ cioty. Wo have departed, however, to 6')ue extent, from our original ir;- tentinn in these remarks, to ve a brief account of the observance outlie anniversary of John the Baptist, t>y I P. T. J. N- Singleton, the oldest mem ber of ihe Lodge, after which, by re quest of the W. M , Dr, (J. R Moo:o made a short speech of welcome and announced the programme of tho day Tho Itev. J. M, Rotter, oiut >r of the day, was tlisu introduced, and for nearly an hour he held the undivided attention of all present. His addtoes, in every sense of word, was to the ‘ point.” At the propel hour dinner was announced and, —pen fails to descrioe it. Suffice it to say the re past was most excellently prepared by tho good sisters, and in quantities suf ficient for three times as many peo ple. In the afternoon a bcuutilul de giee - Eastern Sar was conferred upon a tiunYber of ladies and gentle men, which completed the programme and the crowd dispersed, going to their homes fbclitig that it was good to he there. The flay throughout was mod pleasautly spent, and on the 24;h day of next June wo hope lo meet all the members of the Lodgs on a simi lar occasion, Married. By Elder J. M. Potter, June 26.
