them to the very best advantage.—
They will furnish comfortable sleep
ing apartments to their customers,
and lots and shelter for their stock,
during thier stay with them, free of
charge. They will strive to promote
and protect the interest of those who
deal with them in every way. Above
all, both the gentlemen of the firm
are known to be perfectly trust worthy
and capable. Read their advertise
ment and be assured that you can
pilace your interests in no better or
safer hands.
All Raised at Home.
At the singing last Sunday, it was
our good fortune to share the hospital
ities of our friends and countymen,
Messrs. O. C. Clevland and J. B. F.
Harrell. Large cloths were spread
under the shade of the oaks and pro
visions of the best quality were piled
on them in sufficient quantity for at
least fifty persons. We gave the ta
ble a serotinous examination and
pronounced it one ofihe best dinners
that it lias been our pleasure to test
for a long while, and, upon enquiry,
we were informed that everything on
the table was raised at home, with
perhaps, the exception of the sugar
used in cooking the cakes, etc. This
clearly evinces the truth that all wc
consume can be raised in Southwest
Georgia, the garden spot of the
world.
No Paper Next Week.
According to custom, we shad take
a week's holiday from to-day and is
sue no paper next week, not particu
larly because it is the 4th of July,
but because We, Us & Cos., need
rest. Our typos have worked hard
all the year from Monday morning
till Saturday night and are tired. Be
sides, they want a chance to display
their agility and exercise their limbs
by swinging on the ropes in the pub
lic square, and climbing peach or
chard and watermelon-patch fences.
Ye Local wants to go on a visit to

wants to go and see an old bachelor
friend, who has long roamed at large,

rimony, and then drop a tear over
his sad fate. So, give us a rest.
Personal.
Mr. C. E. Holiday, our clever and
obliging telegraph operator, left for
Augusta on last Monday, to visit his
friends and relatives. He will be ab
sent several weeks. His many friends
here wish him a pleasant vacation.
Messrs. Wm. S. Parks and Wni.
A. Janes, two clever Dawson boys,
now in the drug business at Augus
ta, who have hren on a visit to
friends and relatives at this place for
several days past, returned to Augus
ta on last Monday. The young gen 1 •-
men seemed to have enjoyed then
vacation, and their many friends :e
--gretted to see them leave—especially
the girls.
Our esteemed friend and fellow
townsman, O. B- Stevens and his es
timable lady, left here on last Mon
day cn route to Middle Georgia to
visit friends and relatives. We wish
them a pleasant trip and safe return.
Mr. Stevens is the junior member of
the warehouse firm of Dozier A Ste\-
ens, and during his absence he will
visit Savannah to make arrangements
to furnish hb customers with bag
ging and ties at reduced prices. Tube
is an industrious little fellow and
will do everything in his power to
advance the interest of the planters.

well reputed city, and do now com

portion of it, but the conduct of a few
persons at the exhibition on last
Thursday and Friday nights has con
vinced us that there are some in our
midst who are certainly a disgrace to
themselves. Unless they change
their mischievous course, society
would be better off had they never
been born. This item is written in
the best of feelings toward all and is
intended to inform those bad boys
that their conduct on the nights
above named, if pursued, will cer

on themselves and triends.
An Interesting Book.
Mr. D. Bigelow is agent for a book
called the “Woman on the Fronteri”
which gives an interesting account
of many thrilling scenes that occur

and on the border since.
It is a very interesting book. If

The Singing Last Sunday.
On Sunday last, the time set apart
for an all day singing at the Primi
tive Baptist Church, li miles east of
this place, a large number of people
assembled and engaged in singing.
The crowd was not as large as usual
ly assemble on such occasions, owing,
we suppose, to the threatning clouds
that morning. However, the houso
was filled with attentive listeners, and
all seemed delighted aFrof. Jennings
and h’ excri-ont class lead off in some
good, od ri.no sacred music. The
writer : to.; acquainted with the ru
diments o. music, hut those who are,
pionouuced the singmg on this occa
sion superior to any of the former an
nual singings. A young gentleman,
Mr. Isaac Martin, from Randolph
county, was present and lead two les
sons during the day. Being thor
oughly familiar with music, and, hav
ing a splendid voice, he did not fail
to please all who listened to him.—
Mr. Mr.rtiu Is yet quite a young man,
though lie appears to feel perfectly at
home while leading a class. Some of
the fair sex were truly charmed with
him, and are anxious for his early re- I
turn. After four lessons had bee i
taught, an intermission of an hour
was given for dinner. Cloths were
spread aud a sumptuous repast was
served by the hungry people present.
Of the magnifficent dinner we will not
speak, only to say that, in quality, it
surpassed anything of the kind we
have witnessed for a long time—and,
it was all raised at home—that’s the
good part of it.
In the afternoon a large number
from the city went out and spent the
evening most pleasantly. We hope
Brother Jennings will announce an
other all day singing to come off soon.

Coining Exercises of Our Male
Academy.
As announced in our last issue, the
examination exercises of the South
Georgia Male Institute, in our city,
were concluded during last Thursday
and Friday, and were witnessed and
appreciated by many of our citizens,
especially the patrons of theschooL—
The numerous classes were rigidly
examined in their various studies by
their teachers, assisted by and under
the supervision of the visiring Com
mittee appointed to attend the exam
inations. The several blanches of
study pursued at the Institute were
ably illustrated by the pupils who
demonstrated their proficiency and
thoroughness to a marked degree.
For an extended account ol these
examinations we refer our readers to
the complimentary and impartial re
port of the Examining Committee to
be found in anothercolumn of to-day’s
paper; and we take the liberty of
endorsing that report and accepting
it as our own, not neglecting to spe
cially note the fact that Messrs. Allen
and Lowrey are most excellent teach
ers, and urging our citizens to rally
to their support. On Thursday eve
ning it was our pleasant lot to be
present and witness the declamation
exercises h y the pupils of the School.
We had our reportroial pencil and
note book with us intending to par
ticularize and mention the best de
claimed but after the boys had con
cluded we determined we could not
mention all, and where each did so
well, it would be invidious to eulo
gize any,Jand that “comparisons would
be odious.”
Oa Friday evening, the college
chapel was densely packed by a very
large and appreciative audience that
had assembled to witness the exhibi
tion. The selections which were to
be placed on the boards that night
were two plays composed by Prof. W.
H. Allon, one a brief comedy which
was specially written fortho occasion,
and the other a beautiful and entranc
ing melo-drama entitled, “The Vow
Fulfilled,” which was composed by
the Piofessor in 1861 and revised for
last Friday night’s entertainment,
For over three hours the delighted
spectators were entertained. by the
rendition of thp.se two selections, and
as the curtains fell at the close ol each
scene the audience evinced their
thorough appreciation of the acting
of the several characters ty loud
outbursts of applause. The “dra-
matis’personae” were the pupils of
the school aided by a number of our
most fascinating young ladies, nnd by
those amateur favorites J. H. Guerry
Esq., and Capt J A. Fulton, and by
Mr. L. W Peeples. The music for
the occasion was kindly furnished by
CLpt. J. P. Allen on his violin, ac
companied by his daughter Mrs L.
W. Peeples on the piano. The music
was excellent and enjoyed by all pres
ent. We have not the space at hand
to criticise severally the acting of the
various characters, for all agree that
in the main it was quite good indeed.
We must be allowed to say that Miss
Alice Farnurn who sustained the role
of tho heroine in “The Vow Fulfilled ”
played superbly and won many worthy
compliments Miss Nora Allen as
“Mrs. Prim” acted her part most ad
mirably, and achieved splendid suc
cess. Col. Guerry, as ‘‘Hi.fflan” sus
tained his part most perfectly, and
was a capital actor. And Capt. Ful
ton as “Old Quizzical” was tho life of
the play and brought down tbebonse
at every appearance of his humorous
face. In fact all were well up in their
parts, and furnished one of the best
entertainments of the kind we ever
attended. We sincerely hope that
this roost excellent institution of learn
ing will be liberally supported and
patronizedby all ourcitizene for we cei
tainly believe it deserves a hearty and
generous patronage. We trust that
on the I9th day of August next* when
the exercise# of the school will be re
sumed, Messrs. Allen an 1 Lowrey
will be greeted by at least one hun
dred students. Let us all labor at and
earnestly strive to that end.

Report of JEJuuniaiesr Commit
tee of the. fcrOJJtii Georgia
Male Institute.
We, the under s/giietf, paving been
appointed as a Committee to attend and ob
serve tbc recent examinations and closing
exercises of tbe Male Institute, oeg leave
to submit the following report:
We congratulate tbe friends end patrons
of tbe school upon tbeir good fortune In
securing the efficient services of two such
sble and competent preceptors as Profs
W. H. ALLf.fi and J. W. F. Lowrey. These
gentlemen are finished scholars and thorough
educators ef youth, and their proficiency
und success in Imparling instruction were
ver> successfully demonstrated by the recent
rigid, impartial, and satisfactory examina
tion' of their students. We watched there
examinations closely and critically, and ere
prepared to report in candor and sincerity
that they evinced most patient and thorough
instruction on the pari of the teacherß,
and hard study and proficiency on the part
of the scholars. We would especially note
the fact that tho examinations of the small
est pupils were surtisfuctory to a very high
degree, showing what earnest care and at
tention arc devoted to the little fellows who
are just beginning to climb tbc hill of science
We would emphasise tne fictthat the study
of mathematics is made a specialty Id this
school, and the classes in all departments of
this difficult and important branch of learn
ing allowed that they bad received marked
attention. In Glassies, the boys and young
men of tbe Institute evinced wonderful
proficiency and acquaintance with the subtle
lore of Greece and Home. The classes in
Horace and Virgil deserve special mention
at our bands. Soma of the members of our
committee conducted the examinations of
these classes, aud were agreeSblv delighted
with the manner in which the difficult pas
sages in Hsrace aud Virgil's Aeneld were
translated and construed. Tho class In
Natural Philosophy also was a moat excel
lent one, and stood a scathing and success
ful examination in the mysteries aud intri
cacies of Optics, Preumatics, Hydraulics,
Hydrostatics, and this obstruse science. The
classes in Algebra and Geometry were per.
feclly proficient in their text boobs and
were examined from beginning to end, aud
were masters of the situation and passed
most creditable examinations.
We do not deem it neccessay te elaborate
upon tbe several parts or divisions of these
examination exercises; and we heartily and
unequivocally piononnce them a pleasant
ana decided success, both severally hd col
lectively. In concluding our report We take
great pleasure in referring to the declamation
bv the pupils on Thursday evening and the
exhibition on Friday night. The boys all
acquitted them-eiVes handsomely, and gate
indubitable evidence of proper and syste
matic culture iu the art of elocution and
oratory. Tbe entertainment on Friday
night Was a fitting finale to the previous
exercises, and was thoughout a most enjoya
ble and truly excellent affair.
We hereby reaffirm our confidence in the
ability asd character of Professors Allen k
Lowrey, the Associate Principals of the
Institute, as efficient and able instructors of
youth, and deserving of a large share of
public patronage. "We cheerfully Com
mend the South Georgia Vale Institute to all
parents as a school of high order for tbeir
sons, and we bespeak for it an ever in
creasing prosperity, and solicit for It a lib
eral patronage at ihe hands of an Intelli
