The largest and best watermelons
brought to Dawson this season, were
those raised by Mr. W. D. Murray.
His melons always find ready sale.
Crops generally throughout the

made, and an immense crop it is,
too.

Fair Next Fall.
By reference to the proceedings of
the agricultural meeting published
elsewhere, it will be seen that, by
unanimous vote, it was determined
■to hold a fair in*Dawson some time
next fall. Let the people generally
of Terrell county encourage the en
terprise. A good fair held here will
benefit this whole section. The
next meeting of the Society will be
held at the Court house on the first
Saturday in August, when it is earn
estly hoped that a large attendance
of our citizens, as well as every
member of the society, will be pres
ent. The ball lias been put in mo
tion and let’s keep it rolling.
District Meeting.
We learn that the late session of the
Americas District Conference which
was held in. Cuthbcrt last week
was very harmonious and productive
of great good. The delegates from
this charge were C. R. Moore, I. D.
Graves and J. G. Parks, the latter of
whom was elected as Secretary of the
body. The introductory’sermon was
preached on Tuesday morning by
Rev. F. A. Branch of Americas, and
was a most excellent discourse. The
sessions of the conference were pre
sided over by Rev. J. W. Hinton D.
D., who also preached several able
and capital sermons. The Repor's
hv the Pastors of the respective
charges in the bounds of the Dis
trict were in the main full of hope
and encouragement, and gave great
caues for congratulation. The
caue3 of education received a liberal
share of the attention of the Confer
ence. T e report of the Committee
on education was quite full, and the
claims of Andrew Female College at
Cuthbcrt, and our own Male High
School, the South Ga. Institute, were
warmly espoused and presented to
the people of the District.
We hear of several accessions
which will be added to our Male
School next term by reason of this
action of the District Conference.
The following were selected as
Delegates to the next Annual Con
ference: Rev. John D. Clark, T. M.
Furlow, C. R. Moore, and W. W.
Dews: Alternates: M. K. R\lander,
11. S. Burton, W. J. Collins, and J.
G. Parks.
Dawson was unanimously chosen
as the place for holding the next
session of the conference which will
be some time next June or July.
We extend them a cordial welcome
in behalf of our city.

Unlucky.
A colored damsel who is engaged
as a cook on Lee street, was very
much disappointed the other night.
She was to be married on that night
in the negro church here, and the
j announcement had been made, and
all the negroes assembled at the
church. The expectant bride pre
pared herself in her wedding ap
parel, and had every preparation
made for the nuptials. But, lo! no
bridegroom appeared upon the scene ;
and whoever heard of a marriage
without a groom? After waiting ti 1
after eleven o’clock, the luckless
groom turned up, but no wedding
was celebrated, as the finances of the
would-be-groom had been so depleted
that he was not able to buy the li
cense! Then a “fuss in the family’’
ensued, and “all hands and the cook' ’
got very wrathy.

Letter from Calhoun County.
Editors Journal: We have been
pegging away for dear life down here, and
hare not hed time to tell what we are doing
until now. 1 have never seen people mare
desperately in earnest than the farmers of
the county have been since tney commenced
to make the prosent crop. Every one ap
peared, from the start, to lnpreciate the fact
that the situation demanded more than an
ordinary effort on their put, and went to
work with a determination that deserves to
be called heroic. Such efforts are never
without results, and in this instance, they
are most gratifying. Crops throughout the
county almost without an exception, have
been well cultivated, and have suffered very
ittle as a general thing notat all for rain, and
as a natural consequence, they are excep
tionally good. The corn crop is now safe,
and i- the best Southwest Georgia has made
in ten years. The supply for next year will
be amply sufficient for home consumption,
so that not a bushel need to b; shipned here
for the next twelve months, and, in fact,
I am not sure if there will not. be a surplus.
Cotton is doing its best and is just as good
as our lands can make it. We have the
best bottom crop I ever saw, and tne middle
crop is now rapidlv maturing The plant is
in a perfectly hmlthv condition, and has
thrown off less than I have ever seen before
If it continues growing until the end of
this month as it has done and i- doing now
the crop will be unprecedented iu this part
of the state, ft is muilring and opening
earlier than I ever knew efore in an expe
rience of twenty-live veers. I predict there
will be new cotton in market, from the lower
portion of this county in two weeks. Cane,
peas and potatoes are very promising, and,
if seasons hold out, will uuke an abundant
yield.
We have had less sickness, up to this time,
than for many vears. Our people are in
fine spirits, and appear to be more contented,
better satisfied with their country and more
hopeful for the future than they have been
fer years.
The C, egression tl election, or rather the
nomination, is now being talked of a good
deal, but our county has no t j e t elected
delegates to the nominating convention.
Uon. W. E. Smith has many warm friends
among u, while some tbiak he hr? been
fulßeienily honored. I bellevs he is adml 1 -
ted by ail to be the most available man we
have, and, in View of the (act that ihc re
publican party is goiog to make its most
gigantic efforts to carry every district that
has heretofore ciceted a republican member
of Congres j , it would be good policy to
nominate him. Ilis nomination would all
like a bumb-shell iu the camp of the enemy.
They live in wholesome fear of him, for
they know his strength.
