The Journal. J. 11 110 YL, Editor, r DAWSON, GEOItGIA, ThursG.iy Morning, Aug. I,*7S. 3l:uinal of Georgia. By the kindness of Dr. Thos. P. Janes, Commissioner of Agriculture! we are in po.-s ssion of a copy of his ‘‘Manual of Georgia,” It is a pam phlet of ever 100 pages, giving, m a condensed form, a description of the state astolocation, climate, soil, health agricultural and mineral resources, zailroads, nr mi f. ctuies, educa'ional facil'ie? and rations o'bar tilings of int-rest. Besides it gives a short dc~ •caption of er.cb county and town. — We append what it says of D.iw-on at.d Terrell county Doth as a specimen and as a nutter of inteiest to our re-adeis: Tesbell—population, in IS*O, 1>,053 — 3,7G0 white, 5,:.84 black ;4 per cent of aiea irreclaimable swamp, soil h*l! clay, half sandy, 324 ter cent oi tillable land c'eaied, SO per een*, of la r m laborers Mach; limestone a bun daut and usod by piarrers with good effect; has 28 puhl c fre > schools for whites 8 fm black-; 1- Bahtistchurch es 10 Methodic, 1 Prasha'eri in; 1 railroad car factory with 100 hands: wagon and barrel factories and il >ur and lumber n.ills. D.VWBOK— The capital town, is on the South western Railroad, 40 miles from Eufaula A'a, and is the market town for most of the country products; has 1,150 inhabitants—7so white, 400 black ; 200 private dwellings, 2 hotels, 2 banks, 4 oh niche , 6 s; h ols with 225 pupil?, 1 weekly newspaper, 11 dry goods stores, f) gr. eery stores 2 drug stores, 2 hard ware stores G physicians /•lawyers 1 dentist. Tiro above we believe is nearly ac. curate as to our county and town ) though we know of but one bank in Datvson, and of but five practising physicians. W notice some inacura. ties as :o o-thor towns with which we are acquainted. The population o* mai yof our neighboring towns is pieced about twice ns high as a car ful enumeration would justify, or else they have out grown the tralitiona! mushroom since the publication of the rial rep >rts. These error 1 * wo presume a'ise from exaggerated gupssrsof interested parties. The book is a very va! uable one, and we are requested by Dr. Janes to slate that bo tiillsoud it to any on e who will send hint a 6 cent stamp. First Georgia Bale. The firr.t bale of new cotton was re coived at Albany on the 25t1 of July, from the p’arration of Piituus Jones, of Biker county. It was sold at .auc tion tor IS cents per pound, and im mediately shipped to New York.— Mr. Jones brought in the first bale but year fin the 4th of August, two weeks later than the present one. IlawkinsviUe Dispatch: “The explo sion of an empty barrel is something unusual, t ut oa Monday afternoon an instance of the kind eecured at the idace of Mr. Henry Watemian, on I’ii e Love', llis biothor Mauricewas prepaiing barrels to receive the wine then being pressed 1 1 their vineyard. The barrel that exploded had only two or th O' days previovsly been thoroughtly washed inside, the head board taken out, and the barrel left m the sun. The heal was again in serted and so lef'. When it became necessary to use it, Maurice bold a lighted tulphur match to the hung bole, to destroy any obuoxius gases that might have foiraod, There was more gas than was expected and in an instant theio was a terrific explo sion and much confusion. Maurice was burned considerably and Miss A ieo Waterman, standing near by, -.as slightly wounded by a piece of the batrel but no seti.ms injury was sustained by anyone.” Thomaston Enterprise: Oa last ] uGcday evening a little daughter of Judge Oliphant, about four years <ld while at play showed sudden and alarming symptoms of suffocation.— It was evident that something had passed from the mouth into the wind pipe for it was with the greatest diffi culty that she could breathe. Vsii ous comedies were used with the hope of disloging the foieign body but without effect. She remained in this truly distressing condition till the next morning, when the operation of tiacheotomy was performed and a part of a broken glass ear-bob was extracted. Before the operation all signs of animation had become responded and she was pronounced dead The operator I>r. E. A, Flew tllen, notwithstanding, went ahead —completed the cutinto the wind-pipe and then resuscitated the patient by aitficial respiration. The child is now running about and in a few days the wound will be entirely belled and she pefecily well. —-■ • A 'lant a Independent: There lives near Bartlesville, Qeotgia, a man named Dr. Lavender, who treats his dumb btufes in a most barbarous manner, lie cuts the fore legs of bis goats off near the knees, and large uu.nbers of them are frequently s.en hobbling about his p'euiises. He, also knocks the horns iff ol all his homed animals. Such prac’ices should bo stopped, if there is any pow er in law, and .he perpetiaior should be severely punished. Comiminicitoil. Sabbath School Celebration jit Macedonia. Messrs. Editors : Having just return ed from a Sunday School Convention at Macedonia, in Webster county, and thinking you might like to hoar from thorp, as you wore not tlroieto partuk-* of the business yourselves, I will give you n brief s'atenaont of the manner in which the rxeicises of the uay were conducted. Mr. N. A. Windsor made a few re marks on the subject of Sunday Schools and introduced J. T. \\ indsor, of Amerieus as the speaker of the day My mission was not to hear, but 10 partake of the dinner, which I had heard was to bo given on tho occa sion, so I became very impatii nt. though, as it was eousin John, i thought I would be wil'ing to hear him out, not thinking he would have much to say, ns I knew nothing of hi? bavins’ more then an ordinary English education, hut before lie got through, I imagiuod that I was much mistaken, —it could cot he eousin John Ho spoke of Greece arid Romo, and all other place? of note, with so tni’ch e’< quonce that I thought fie must he some European orator. We then had some splonded musi", after which an essay was read by Miss Eliza Mer cer, and another ly Miss Woodhain, both of whom acquitted themselves with honor. We aso lial some speech os by some of the hoy?, which cause ’ me to make the inquiry it I was at an examination. I desired that part to c'ose, as I was beginning to feel like etting, but after they got through the Rev. Mr. Cawood made another long speech which, I suppose, was very interesfing to those who went there to hear tpeeehes, but not so much so to those who went there to eat. After he got through all were invited to the table which we found oaded with all the luxuries we eould wish. We don’t see such diuners every where. Notwithstanding the g eit multitude tuat was present there was enough left for another din ner for the same crowd. When old Gousbouy undertakes anything s o goes the a hole hog. Sumter, If mdolph, Stewoi t, Marion : and Terrell were all represented,— [ Out city was represented by O. B. Stevens and family, and myself. Mr Stevens requested me to say to his copartner to manage the best ho could lor Ire would not he back while times w’ete 90 good in Webster. After din ner, there was another speech, by Prof. McNulty, which I failed to hear, (hough I au informed it was very in teresting. r J. R. 11. Dawson, July 28, 1878. Note from the Country 12tu District, July 27th, 1878. Messrs. Editors: Thinking that you would like a note from this sec tion of our county, I will give yon a few lines fur your Journal, Crops are needing rain very much' at this time; corn cut off about one-iourth; cotton shedding badly and b§gip nir.g to open. I suppose from the ex treme heat an i the drouth beforo it fully matured. Fodder pulling is now ou hand, but little pulled as yet. Messrs. Editors, by chance I fell in at my old friend, Jeptha Cannon’s for dinner ou the 26th instaut- lie had all his children there and sixteen grand children, and a few other ro a tives ami special fiiends. At 12 o’clock the table was spread in the yaid under some large oak-*, and heavily laden with ail the good edi bles that heart could wish for, and if you could have seen J. \V. Roberts, jr., Win. Thomas and H r-chel Chii - tie eat, you would have at once con cluded that their legs were hollow From every indication that I cou'd see, my old friend Cannon “lives at home and boards at the same place;” his lots were full of calves and one would think he had plenty of nice milk and butter and from the large uuaiber of pigs wo saw, we are quite certain that he makes his own meat. He has plenty of corn and peas in the field, and I see no reason for hard times with him. * Subcbibeu. Darling, Liston to My Story. Planters don’t Park in Flax Tow Bagging. The Macon cotton buyers yesterday addressed the wart housemen a com munication in which they say they j will he compelled to decline any bab‘3. of cotton covered in whole or in parti with flux tow nagging. '1 bey nail at tention to the following from Rule! No 13, passed by the New York Cot ton Exchange, Junp 0 b, IS; 8: “On and after Monday, September 2nd, IS7B, cotton covered with flax tow flagging, containing shives (or small pieces of straw) or manufac-i lured from unrolled or impel fee ly j ri tt J flax, shall he deemed unurei ehantaf.de ami shail not Da good de livery in this market.” The cotton buyers in theii letter to the Macon warehousemen B>y: Avery serious objection to this kind of covering is th it nearly ah the bal es ar.ivn at ruifis or foreign ports in un usually bad order. The flagging be ing jot e;i and weak tears easily, acd exposes tlre cotton, subjecting ihe bry cis to serious loss in weight, c c. It is supposed that a large quantity of this cloth is now in tho hands of manufac tures and deales, and wi 1 he offered at such prices as will tempt the plan ter to use it. And we Consider it '6 y important t i let it be generally known that all cotton so covered will he re jected, and thus save our planters the expense of having 'he same re-cover ed. — Telegraph Sf Messenger. Mixed Babies. Some time ago there was ad inc’ng party given in a certain neighborhood j in Texas at.d most of the ladies pres- j eiit had )itt ! e babies, whosenoisy per versity requited too much attention to permit the mol hers to enjoy the dance. A nuuJ-er of gallant young men vol unteered to mind the young ones while the parents indulged in an old Virginia breakdown. No sooner had the women loft the babies in charge of the mischievous devi's than they stripped the babies, changed their c'othes, giving Iheappare! ofoneto an other. The dunce over it was time to go home, and the mothers hurried-i ly took each a hufiy in the dress of her own and staited, some to their home?, ten or fifteen miles off, and ware far on their way beforedaylight. But tho day following there was a treu eudous row iu the settlement.— Mothers disCoVt led that a single night had changed the sex of their bubrs, ohser vation disclosed physical pheno mena, and then commenced the tall ei-t female pedestriaai?m. Living 1 miles apart, it r quired two or three days to uumis tire babies, and ns many months to restore the mo,hers to their na'ura 1 sweet disposition?.— To this day it is unsafe tor any of the baby m’xers to feature into the neighborhood. A Strange Crime. Avery p-e'diur crime is that of which William Noiiis of Indepen dence, Ohio is accused. Norris, a married man twenty sixyeaisold wish ed to get rid of little Alhe Berry, so ho clori formed her made an incision with a knife in her mot injected poison into the wound, and then raised the alarm that she had been bitten by a snake. The Mi’id, at last accounts was in a dy condition, and Norris was un der arrest with imminent propects of be-ng lynched. A Lexington correspondent of the Augusta Chronicle writes as follows- A funny little episode occurred in Mr. Stephens’ speech Saturday which shows that from the sublime ad ridi cule n* there is but one step hardly a span from Jefftrson to jollity. ‘ Lit tle Aleck” had just begun to tread water on one of those constitutional billows of his and ws dashing Jef fersonian spray all around him, when drawing that little phial ol Bourbon, h" daucked liis 'ips with a gentle sip, and, returning the bottle to his pick et, th us concluded hisrhetoiical swell: “Yes, fellow-citiz.>n3, th : s is true De mcoracy.” A geatie smile hovered over and lingered around the crowd for somo mir.u’es, and' with the pro found assurance that the Commoner was well organized if that phial be true, they reiapsod into attention again.
