The Singing.
On last Sunday Profs. Bighie and
Horsley visited our city for the pur
pose ot organizing a class in vocal
music. In the afternoon a large
number of our citizens assembled
at the Baptist church where several
sacred songs were sung by Prof.
Bighie. lie then invited all present
to join him, and we unhesitatingly
pronounce the music rindered on this
occasion decidedly the best we have
heard inDawsouforalong while. The
Professor then stated that he would
teach an unlimited number eight
days for the sum of fifty dollars.—
■Nearly that amount has already been
subscribed, and we feel safe in say
ing that the school will begin in
about ten davs.
Painful Accident.
Mr. Uriah M. Powell, a carpenter
of our town, sustained a singular and
very dangerous wound while at
work in his shop on last Tuesday af
ternoon. lie attempted to sii down
on a plank lying across his saw bench'
es. The plank, unknown to Mr.
Powell, was not sound, and gave way
under his weight, causing him to fall
backwards. In falling a large one
and a half inch chisel with a very
keen edge was driven through the
posterior right wall of the chest into
the cavity. The sharp instrument
interea about two inches below the
shoulder blade and about the same
distance from the back-bon#, and
vanging upward and outward, pene
trating the cavity of the thorax.—
His physician, Dr. W. B. Cheatham,
reports the wound as not neccessarily
fatal., hut regards the termination as
uncertain, but at the present writing
is disposed to entertain hopes of his
recovery.

Sabbath School Celebration at
Cliickasawha tehee.
A writer in last week’s issue very
truthiully said that it is indeed quite
a relief to the mental and physical
man to turn eside ever and anon from
the cates, routine and monotony of
every day life to seek recreation in
some social, festal occasion. Having
been very kindly remornbered with
an invitation by our clever Chieka
sawha'chee friends, we, in company
with Mr. 0. B. Stevens, attended
their Union Sabbath School celebra
tion on last Thursdey.
Chickasawhatchee is a beautiful lit
tle villuge, situated in a magnificent
natural growth of oaks, about seven
miles southeast of Dawson, and being
desirous of spending as muen of the
day us possible with our friends down
there, wo left here at an early hour,
and before the heat of the day we
were fat enough from the dull, hot
town to enjoy the delightful morning
air as it came fresh and sweet from
the large fields, and hear the merry
tinkling of tha cow bells, and the
matin-song of trie farmer’s daughters
floating across the meadows; and ere
long old Sol. rising over the eastern
hill’s, spreading into the lovely foibst,
tipping the corn fields with a richer
yellow, contras’ing beautifully with
the deop green of the udjacent cotton,
we coaid almost realize that for beau
ty of scenery Terrell couuty would
compare favorably even with the
vice-clad hills of famous Italy, of
which we hear so much.
We notice very much less land ly
ing idle than for many years. Every
nook and corner that is under feuoe
seems to oe in cultivation. The corn
crop is laid by, an and we believe it is
made, and the yield will be immense.
The cotton is clean ; the plant is large
a’ and well fruited, is free from any ap
pearance of catterpillar, and oa the
whole looks indeed promising.
As we approached the village, wo
saw a long procession forming in
front of the Methodist church, under
the direction of Judge L M. Leonard
which moved slowly and in orler to
the Baptist church, where the exer
cises of ths day took place. As many
as could possibly seat themselves
were in the house, and a large crowd
were near enough to hear the sweet
music and glad singing of an hundred
merry voius swell the morning air.—
The two schools were seated near the
speaker’s stand, when, after an im
pressive prayer by the Rev. H J.
Williamson, the children, assisted by
teachers and friends of the schools,
joined in singing—making some of
the best music that it has been our
pleasure to hear in a long while, af
ter which we had a very fine address
by the Rev. J. H. Cciley of this city,
and a short, hut very neat and happy
effort by Captaiu Scott, of that pl .ee.
After another beautiful Sahiath
School song, the audience was dis
missed, and all scattered through the
grove to meet at noon around the ta
bles loaded with the substantial and
delicacies of the country. The ar
rangements were excellent, aud re
flect much credit on the manage
ment, the tables boing arranged in
the form of a equale, with a centre
table for the barbecued meats, and af
ter the dear little Sabbath School
children had been furnished their
places at the tables, the guests were
invited to “help thyself,” and thfe
good people in charge seamed to out
do themselves in looking out for the
comfort and entertainment of thtir
mony friends. A glance around the
large table showed us that Dawson
was well represented, and that her
representatives were well cared for.
Dinner over, the crowd reassem
bled in the church to listen to ti.oie
singing and addresses by the Rev. J.
M. Potter and R. A. Wilkinson, Esq.
Those who kuow Mr. Potter are will
ing tc believe that his address was
well suited to the occasion without
further comment. Mr. Wilkinson’s
speech was short, but contained some
•valuable lessons.
All prt sent seemed >e enjoy the oc
casion to the fullest extant, and we,
for one, regretted when the time came
for us to leave. To Mr. John H, Col
lier and family, and to other friends,
we return sincere thanks for the many
acts of kindness shown u°, and to
those parties who swelled our sub
scription list, we are under obligations,
| and will try to give them a good pa
per.
We returned to Dawson in the
evening feeling very grateful to those
kind friends who had made us spend
such a pleasant day, and wish them
many leturnsof their annual Union
Sunday School Celebration.

Overtasking the Energies.
I is not advisable for any of ua to over
task our energies, corporeal or mental, but
in the eager pursuit of wealth or fame or
