Card from AV. C. Gaines, CoPdL
Dawson, Ga., August 13, 1878..
Messrs. Editors ; Please allow me
a small space in your esteemed Journ
al to express ray gratitude to my
white friends who have contributed
so freely to committees out on begging
tours for the benefit of my church. —
I wish to thank them for what
they have done, and, also, to let the
members of the A. M. E. Church
know that the whites in Dawson are
in sympathy with us, as elsewhere,
Very Respectfully,
W. C. Gaines, Pastor.
To the Citizens of Dawson and
Vicinity.
After visiting several places in dif
ferent portions of the United States
for business, I have decided to locate
permanently in Dawson, and have
formed a co-partnership with my
father, Dr. C. A. Cheatham, in the
drug business and practice of medi
cine. I can be found at the drug
store during the day—at the resi
dence of father, at night. Soliciting
a share of patronage, I am,
Very Respectfully,
W. B. Cheatham, M. D.

It is a mournful fact that a man
never knows when to qu,t cutting a
corn. Ho endures untold physical dis
comfort getting into the right pouition,
and then he never lets up until the
massacre is complete. There is al
ways the temptatiou, never resisted,
to take off just one more slice, and
when at last the final nervous move
ments dig out a piece of his sensitive
flesh as big as a small porter-house
steak, the man howls and tells his
wife she’ll cripple him for life some of
these days with her infornal foolish
ness and goes to bed, leaving his poor
wife to wonder what under the sun
she had to do with it. What a single
man does Pr somebody to biumc, no
body knows. We guess they never
cut their corns.
Letter from Tobie.
Tenth District, 1
Randolph County, Ga.;
August lt2t.li 1878. j
Editors Taw sen Journal :
Gents: In perusing the columns of
your valuable paper of the sth instant
I notice a communication from the
11th District of your coumy, signed
“Eusticus,” which, I suppose, is a
ficticious nanv\ though, no doubt, a
verv appropriate one, or lie would not
have used it. Now, Messrs. Elitors,
I only wish to reply to the P. S. of
Mr. Eusticus’ letter. Iu tho first place
he sees fit to get out of his own court,
ty and comes “just over the line to
criticise the poor land and crops of
his friend Tobie.” I hope by his P.
S. that he has harmed no one, aud I
am very sorry that he feels so much
interest as to advise me to immigrato
“just across the line, wliero, lie sajs,
hotter lands can be had. Now Messrs
Editors, I am no scientific farmer as
Mr. Eusticus is, though I work the
same kind of poor dir* that ho does,
and I buy tbo same guano from Ihe same
parties and on the same terms he does
(credit.) I buy bacon from the par
ties and on the same terms lie does
(credit.) I have always been ablo to
pay for what I bought, and propose
to do so this year out. of ray poor crop
aud I presume that is as much as Mr.
Eusticus has done or proposes to do.
j lie says that if my entire crop was as
good as the half acre bottom I might
squeeze through another year by not
having to buy more than half rations”
1 think if Ruslieus had even 10 acies,
much less his entire crop as gcod as
the hail acre to which he refers, lie
would house a great deal moio corn
than he will, and that he might‘Vqueze
through” without buying any corn,
which, no doubt, would be a source
of great relief to him as he has been
buying corn for every year for some
time. I hope friend Rustitus will
give himself no unnecessary trouble
about the poor lands I work or the
j j )0 or crops I moke as I will continue in
the future, as in the past, to go to those
lor indulgence who are able and all
seem willing to grant it; though I
j cannot take friend Ilusticus’ advice to
immigrate to his side ol the creek un
til he quits buying corn and has more
rain to keep Ids cotton from rust
ing. Yours truly,
“Tobik, just across tus u.nju”
Overtasking the Energies.
I \ a ~ot advisable for auy of us to over
task our energies, corporeal or mental, but
in the eager pin suit of wealth or fame or
knowledge, how many transgress this s lutarv
rule. It must be a matter of great impor
tance to all who do so to know how thev
can regain the vigor so recklessly expended.
The reinedv is neither costly or dilfi ult. to
obtain. Iloatettei’s Stomach BHters is pro
curable in everv city, town and settlement
in America, and it compensates for a drain
of bodi’.v or mental enertt more effectually
than anv invigorant ever prescribed or ad

journalists, lawyers, clergymen, physicians,
all bear testimony to it- wondrouslv renovat

undergoing fatigue, and counteracts the in
jurious effects upon the system of exposure,

cations, or ao insalubrious climate , and is a
