Apology.
The paucity of local news con
tained in the Journal this week is
largely occasioned by the fact that
serious illness in the Local Editor’s
family has occupied his time, and de
tained him at home. We crave the
indulgence of a generous reading
public, and shall endeavor to make
amends in the future. We desire
and shall endeavor to make the local
department of our paper interesting
to our patrons.

Military.
We call the attention of our mili
tary company to the order of the offi
cers of the Dawson Rifles to be found
in to-day’s issue of the Journal.
We would be delighted to see the
boys thoroughly equipped and
perfectly drilled in the manual
of arms and the school of the soldier.
We hear it suggested that it might
he interesting to have a public parade
during our approaching Fair, and to
engage in a prize drill on the Fair
grounds. It lias been rumored that
if the company will turn out on that
occasion, a private preni urn will be
offered and presented to the best
drilled man in the corps. We feel
sure that such a result will he easi
ly brought about, and we shall do
our best to add this attractive feature
to the Fair. Go to work at once, ye

New Goods! New Goods!
J. I>. Cum is now receiving his

which will be large and consist of al- '
most everything that will supply the
wants of both ladies and gentlemen,
cheap for cash. “Quick sales and

Just Received. — A splendid lot

styles of collars and cuffs, fans, hos

cascarilla corset clasps, perfume,
silk and linen handkerchiefs, pear,

Wild Lands.
We presume a large crowd will be present
on next T uesday to greet Sheriff Christie as
he mounts the box to sell the wild lands ad
vertised in the Journal for sale on that day.
We learn that a number of the lots will not
be offered lor sale as affidavits have been
and will be filed alleging that the taxes on
the landi have been regularly pdd. We re
g-et the fact tha: some ofourci ix -ns bavehad
to incur considerable expense and trouhle in
arresting the sales of their lands which are
advertised as being in default for taxes.
Grave mistakes have occurred somewhere
and in some way it reference to these lands
and we think our local offinals are not to be
censured at all as the Tax Digests are found
to be generally correct. Sum • uiscrepinoies
have been occasioned by the ow ora ot lands
designating them as being in different dis
tricts from those in which they are actually
situated. Ample opportunities will be al
lowed for corr Clin* any and all mistakes
A number of lots will doubtless be soid on
Tuesday and we antisipve some spirited bid
ding. The purchaser's tide to ihese wild
lands becomes perfect at th ; expiration ot a
year; and if the lanl is redeemed by the orig
inal owner within th** time tne purchaser
gets hacks his money expend and, with tweDty

Pay Your Subscription.
Cotton is coming in rapidly and
bringing a good price. Ws hope our
subscibers, some of whom we have in
dulged for a long lime, will now come
up and satfie. We have uot called
for money during the dull summer
months, but now, that a bountiful crop
has been made and is being gathered
and sold, we hope all will come up
and pay the small amount due us.
Our Market.
There in much cause for congratulating
our town upon the prospects for an early re
vival of business and increased activity in
commercial circles. Within the past few
days the “fleecy staple” has been peuringin
upon us, and greenbacks and specie have
been induced to see the light of happy coun
mances once more. Last Saturday, the
streets of our town presented the appearance
ol a day in November, and our merchants
did a first rate trade. Sixty five ba’es of
cotton were brought to our town ou that day
and the greater part of it rapidly sold for
ten cents. The bulk of the tnouey received
by oui planters for this cotton was credited
on merchant’s account, and thus another
class of citizens were made happy also. New
good: have begun to arrive, and in a short
while, the entire fall stocks of merchandise
will be received and offered for sale.
Our readers will doubtless learn more
of this through the columns of the Journal.
Our cotton buyers and warehousemen are
determined to offer every inducement to the
farmers lo bring their produce to our mark
et, assuring them that the highest possible
prices will be paid for cotton.
Dramatic Entertainment.
The “Protection Fire Company’’ of our
city design giving two public exhibitions in
the chapel of the Mule College on next
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings. The ob.
ject in view is to procure funds wit.i which
to aid in purchasing the n- eessary uniforms
for the members of the comrany. Tiie uni
forms are an essential part of an efficient fire
company, and a good outfit is quite expen
sive. J/any of our boys are not able to in
cur this heavy expense, and without it, the
company would b> pooiiy eq lipped for doiog
effective work in a fire. It is for the pur
pose of procuring the needed equipments
that our citizens are called on to expend
twenty-five cents (the pric j of admission) on
the evenings above designated. We trust
that ail will attend, and that the company
may be greeted with full houses each night
7hink of the fietce ravages of the “fire
fiend,” and remember that in expending this
small sum you may perhaps be preparing our
fire company for the better protecting of
your homes and your property. Some of
the best histrionic talent in our midst will ap
pear upon the s'age, and the selections made
for the exhibitions arc most excellent. That,
beautiful and touching drama “East-Lynne,"
with a good caste of characters, will be put
upon the boards, and several capiial farces
will rendered. A rare treat is in store for
all who will g.ace the occasion with their
presence, and a ltudaMe and deserving en
terprise will be supported. The young la
dies and gentlemen who take part in the en
tertainment do so at great sacrifice of time,
and verv much against their inc’inations, but
actuated bv a desire to foster the interests of
our long needed fire company, they have un
dertaken the exhibition. Go out and en
courage their efforts, and benefit your town;
and our word for it, you will be made to feel
light-hearted and happv for having done
your duty, as well as enjoyed a splendid en
j tertainment.
Overtasking the Energies.
It is not advisable for any of us to over
task our energies, corporeal or mental, but
in the eager pursuit of wealth or fame o r
knowledge, how many transgress this s lutary
rule. It must be a matter of great impor
tance to all who do so to know how thev
can re .ain the vigor so recklessly expended.
The remedy is neither costly or difficult to
obtain. Hostettei’s Stomach Betters is pro
curable in every city, town and settlement
in America, and it compensates for a drain
of bodily or mental energy more effectually
than anv invigoranl ever prescribed or ad
vertised. Laboring men, athletes, students,
journalists, lawyers, clergymen, physicians,
all bear testimony to it- wondrouslv renovat
ing powers. It increases the capabilities for
undergoing fatigue, and counteracts the in
jurious effects upon the system of exposure,
sedentary habits, unhealthy or wearying avo
cations, or an insalubrious climate , and is a
