Jones, who has been city Marshal of Dawson for the past two years, tender ed his resignation to the City Council. His reasons for doing so was that other business engagements would not allow him time to give that attention to the office which its importance demanded. Mr. J. B. Avant was elected to fill the vacancy. Melton A Bro., have just received a large stock of gentleman’s fine and cheap clothing, tine beaver overcoats, etc Tramps. We saw last week two tramps with knapsacks on their backs, sticks in their hands, wending their way over our streets. They were heatthy-looking men, ragged and dirty. This tramping business is a nuisance; laziness is at the bottom of it. Any one can procure work if he wishes it. “Out of employment” is too common an excuse—-work is not wanted. Plenty of cotton to pick. Men who will tramp from place to place such busy times as these, will hear j watching. Cabbage, Onions, Potatoes Cheese, Sausage, Canned Goods, etc., at C. i Mize’s. Oranges, Lemons, Coeoanuts, Ap ples, Candies, Nuts, Crackers, etc., at C. L. Alize’s. Beardless and Hairless. A negro man living on Airs. Sarah E. Marshall s place has been in the habit of smoking a pipe. He also keeps a flask of gunpowder in his trunk. A few nights since while smoking, and at the same time examining his “Sun day-go-to-meeting dry goods,” which were in the trunk, a spark from his pipe came in contact with the powdei, and the balance of the story can be bet ter imagined than told. Suffice it to say the negro is beardless and hairless } and when he came to his senses, he was running through the woods in the di rection of Dr. Harps. At last account he was doing well, and says he 11 ne\er keep powder in dat trunk again. Handsome line of dress goods with trimmings and buttons, ball fiingo, etc., just received at Rogers <fc Laing s Air. D. C. Adams’ family left for their iiew home at Ft. Gaines last week. AVe regret very much to loose them from our midst ; and we know the girls will miss Eddie's handsome face. \ J Baldwin & Cos., pay cash for their goods and are thereby enabled to sell them cheaper than those who do uot pay cash. AVe believe the farmers are paying up those “Note-deedlien-mortgages, promptly. Those provisions bills must be settled, if the old oman don t get a new frock. Mrs Jas T. Goode, consort of the talented editor of the Times <S‘ and her little son, Saturate, left last week for Eufanla. W* hope their new home will be a pleasant one. j Several gentlemen from abroad were in our town last week looking for land. AVe learn that all of them are pleased ; with Terrell county, and w.ll nny homes here before a very great while. AVe have looked this week in vain : for news items, and have felt too re [ligiously inclined, to manufacture am. Amputation Necessary. On last Monday several physicians met at the residence of Mr. \V T . G. Aven, which is near town, for the purpose of consulting as to the pro priety of amputating the right arm of his little son, Johnnie Edgar, aged six years. Over a year ago, this sprightly little boy fell from a fence and sprained his arm near the elbow, and though slight, it has resulted in a malignant form of disease that neces sitates its amputation near the shoul der joint. This was the judgement of all the Doctors present, but, owing to some difficulties in the way, they did not operate, but recommended amputation at an early day. Much interest is felt in behalt of the little boy, and the community greatly sym pathise with Air. Aven in this sore trial. Since writing the above we learn that Dr. Moore and Air. Aven, with little Johnnie, took the train last night for Atlanta to have an operation per-: i formed. AVe are glad to learn that La Fayette Colo, w-lio received painful injuries while working at a cane mill a few weeks since, is improving. • ■ Resolutions on the Departure from our Sabbath School of Miss E. A. Moore. Whereas, In the recent removal of Aliss Eudora A. Moore from Daw son to Cuthbert, our Sunday School lias been deprived of a most exem plary and efficient member, and as a fitting testimonial of the high esteem in which she was held by our school, it is therefore, Resolved, by the Methodist Sabbath School at Dawson, That we sincerely regret the fact that Miss Eudora lias been obliged to sever her connection with our School; that, by her remo val, this Sabbatli School has sustain- ed a great deprivation, and has lost one of its most useful and deserving members, and a very excellent and capable teacher. Be it also Resolved, That a copy of these res olutions be forwarded to Aliss Eudora at Cuthbert, and the same be banded the Dawson Journal with the re quest that they be published. Aliss Jennie Rogers, Miss Rebecc a Pilsburt H. S. Bell, j Com. J. G. Parks, U L. Weston, Correspondence. Pleasant llii.l, Oct. 8, 1878. Editors Dawson Journal : Seeing in your paper that you desired short let ters from all parts of the county, we will give you a few “dots” from the 11th District, Notwithstanding this is termed the “dry streak,” Ave have seen mitch poorer crops than the present one. The farmers are gath ering their crops very fast, which are turning out much better than they expected. All say they will pay out, but will have to go in debt another year. Right here let us say a word to our brother-farmers: Do without what we can not pay cash for. It would be far better for us to dispose of a mule, cows, hogs, or anything we have rather than pay the tremendous (CO per cent.) interest heretofore char ged us for die privilege of buying on time. A good idea is to pay cash as •We go. Let us begin in time and sow largely of small grain this fall. Our county is on the verge of prosperity, and if we will continue to plant large ly of cereals, and make our farms self-sustaining, (which we can do) we will soon be an independent people. Let’s wear our brogans andosnaburgs, eat our own “hog and hominy” and quit.grumbling at ourclever merchants and cotton-buyers. What say you, farmers ? Would be glad to hear from you on the subject. Subscriber Webster Cos., Oct. 6, 1878. Editors Dawson Journal: It lias been”some time since I have seen any thing in your paper from this “happy land,” and as the Journal is so high ly appreciated, I have concluded to give you a few dots, and trust that you will not “poke fun” at me if my pen cilings should not prove so interesting as Shakespeare or Byron. Cotton, our heretofore leading crop, is made—much of it is gathered. Drouth and rust in jured the crops to some extent, and of late catterpillars have “teethed” it, but too late to do much damage. After all the “fleecy staple” is uot a failure: some of our planters have made good crops of all kinds. After a thorough test of the surrounding markets, a ma jority of the planters in this section say that Dawson is decidedly the best place to sell their cotton. A\e feel a deep interest in your town, and hope you fel lows will build up one of the best markets in all S. AV. Ga. A\ r ebster Superior Court has just ad journed. During the session a few were sentenced to the State prison and several to the county jail, among whom was the Sheriff of the county, j There has been a great deal ef sick ness in this immediate section, but I have heard of but few deaths up to 1 date. Baldwin <fc Co’s National Surgical Institute. One of the staff of this old and nota ble Institute will visit Dawson, Ga., Oct. 23rd, 1878, stopping at the Hotel. The object of this visit is to give the afflicted an opportunity for examination at or near their homes, thus saving hopeless eases the expense of a trip to Atlanta. A careful examination will be made, and patients can learn if their eases are curable or can be benefited, and whether it will be necessary for them to visit the Institute. In such cases as can be cured, or treatment be“ gun at home, arrangements can be made with our visiting Surgeon, and treat ment commenced at once. Examination free. Cases of Deformities and Chronic Diseases will be examined—such as Club Feet, Diseases of the Hip, Spine and Joints, Paralysis, Piles, Fistula, Catarrh, Female and private diseases, and diseases of the Eye, Ear, &e.
