Hold Your Corn.
We notice that several of the far

corn in order to “raise a little money.”
One gentleman, on last Saturday, sold
150 bushels, in the shuck, at 40 cents
per bushel, about one-third the price
paid for corn last spring. It is true, a
tremendous crop of this grain has been
housed, hut that is no reason why our
farming-friends should dispose of it at
such a low price. Letter hold it til!
next spring or summer when you can
get at lea : 75 cents for it.

New Market House.
For a long while Dawson has been
without a market house, and at times
it was almost impossible for onr citizens
to buy fresh meats of any kind. We
are glad to state that this long felt need
has been supplied. Messrs. J. E. &
J. S. Lee have recently established a
market house and will, in the future,
furnish our people with fresh meats, —
the best in the country. They are en
ergetic gentlemen and deserve a liberai
patronage. AVe believe they will get
it.

Hon. Win. E. Smith.
On last Monday m..ruing quite a
number of the citizens of our town
and county gathered at the Court
House to listen to a speech by our
worthy standard-bearer, who opened
his campaign speeches here on that
day. Col. Smith was introduced to
the audience by our townsman, Jas.
O. Larks, Esq., in a few well chosen
anil appropriate remarks; after which
the distinguished gentleman address
ed his fellow-citizens and . staunch
supporters of Terrell. lie began by
reverting to the dark and trying days
which succeeded the close of the war;
when a military satrap* usurped the
office of Governor of our grand old
state of Georgia; when the “Freed
man’s Bureau” and United States
Marshals and officers were seen on
every hand; when Radical misrule
and carpet-baggers held sway, and
the republican banners were waving
in triumph over our noble common
wealth. The speaker then contrasted
the happy asepet of affairs to-day with
the state of the country just referred
to and depicted. lie then asked the
pertinent enquiry: “Whence and how
came about these mighty changes ?
AVhat is it that has brought order out
of chaos, and restored us almost to
our wonted prosperity?” r Fhe an
swer, he very appositely concluded, is
found in the triumphs and successes
of the Democratic party. In the
united and “concentrated efforts of
each and every citizen within the
party.”
The able speaker reviewed at con.
siderable length, the history of the
financial legislation of the country,
and his strictures on the Republican
party for the great fraud perpetrated
in demonetizing silver, were severe
and deserved. Ills exposition of the
manner of the issuing of National
Bank Notes was attentively listened
to, and showed that in this, as in all
other important matters, he was sound
and well informed. He insisted that
the demands of the commerce and
business of this great nation of 45,-
000,000 of people, required more
money, and that the volume of our
currency should not be contracted.—
The Democratic party is pledged and
determined to relieve and regulate
this matter. I’he speakc. also refer
red to the salutary action of the last
Congress in restoring silver as a cir
culating medium, and it was very
gratifviu" to his constituents to know
of lortant services rendered by
unection with this important
subject.
1T look occasion to remark that
this is peculiarly a time when unity
and harmony should prevail in Deni-
ocratic ranks, and when the very best
and safest men should be sent to the
National Councils. The next Con
gress will have the counting of the
electoral votes cast tor President and
Vice President, and in 1880, we must
see to it that the people are not again
defrauded of their rightly elected
Chief Magistrate. The “Electoral
Commission and Bill” were criticised
at some length by the distinguished
gentleman; and his vote upon those
measures was an evidence to his con
stituency of keen perception and
sound wisdom.
We have not space at our command
to attempt even a brief synopsis of
the speech which occupied nnliourin its
delivery, and was listened to with
rapt attention, but have only referred
to the above as one or two of the
salient points contained therein. We
feel confident that old Terrell will
show her appreciation of it by com
plimenting Hon. Wm. E. Smith with
a heavy vote on the sth day of next
November.
Mr. E. E. Cheatham, of Savannah,
was in the city Tuesday and Wednes
day on a visit to friends and relatives.
Misses Viola Wilbanks and Lillie
Johnson, of Brown Station, are visiting
friends at Perry, Ga. We wish them a
pleasant trip and safe return.
Mr. Thos. AY. Powell killed a fine
“Buck” deer in the llth district last
week. Tom won’t “skeered” much.
There has been a great deal of sick
ness in the vicinity of Chickasawhateh
ie this fall. Several deaths have oc
curred down there.
The Ihm. W. E. Smith says Dawson
is the prettiest town in S. W. Ga. Sor
ry we couldn’t show you the pretty
girls, Col.
Judge W. T. Campbell, tax receiver
and collector, publishes his appoint
ments in to-day’s issue. Head them,
and be ready when he comes around.
We learn that the fair at Albany
will be a niagnifficient success. A great
many from Terrell are down there, and
those who have returned report a good
time.
Our clever and little friend, Mr. W.
B. Gibson, will please accept the thanks
of “ye local," for several stalks of very
fine green cane. Such favors, Billie,
are always warmelv appreciated by u>.
May you and that fine hoy of yours live
long and be happy.
, For Sheriff.
As will he seen in this i -mo, Air S.
R. Clu-istie is a candidate for re-elec
tion to the office of Sheriff ot Terrell
countv, subject to the action of a Dem
ocratic nomination if one is held. In
the event of his election, Air. L. A!
Roberts, will continue to discharge the
duties of Deputy Sheriff. These two
gentlemen have filled this responsible
and onerous position for several years
to the entire satisfaction of the citizens
of our county. Atr. Christie has faith
fully and promptly discharged all the
duties of his office, and believes that
the good people of Terrell will endorse
his officia 1 conduct by their votes in i
January next.
“Unde Luke,” the efficient Deputy,
also is entitled to great credit for hi*
unusual promptness and capacity. lie
has the care of the jail, and has at all
times kept secure those entrusted to
his custody. Terrell county is certain
ly fortunate in possessing two such
clever and capable officers as Boh Chris- j
tie and “Uncle Luke” Roberts.
