Evils in the journey of life are like hills which alarm travelers upon their road ; they both appear great at a dis tance, but when we approach them we find that they are far less unsurmount able than when we had conceived them. The fourth quarterly conference of the Dawson and Smii hvihe charge was held here last Saturday night. Messrs, h- W. Dozier and J. G. Parks were elected Superentendents of the Metho dist Sabbath School for the ensuing year. Good selections. Just received from New York a nice line of ladies’ dress goods, wor st eds. plaids, inai ines, etc., for sale very cheap; also, a lot oi fine zephyr silks, at J. B. Ciinis. We are indebted to Hon. W. C. Kendrick, representative from Webster county, for many highly appreciated favors “Dipped into a weak solution of ac complishments,’’ is 'he term now ap plied to those of our girls professing tc be so highly educa ed. Ordinarily a man can go inside of the Oourt-house bar for one dollar ; but it cost a young lawyer five dollars to get out—especially if be jumps over a bench to do so s It takes a man who wants office to see he corruption there is in official circles. The man with the straw hat is stil about, aud he sneak3 along the street, with the pained aud startled look of the man who is expecting Gabriel will sud denly sound the last horn, but keeps hoping that he won t. Some men, well to do in the world, are ignorant of everything passing on around them, just because they are too stingy and penurious to subscribe for some good weekly newspaper, which will cost them less than four cents a week. A man that cannot spend that amount, to keep himself and family posted upon the current events of the day, comes very near being no man at all. An honest son of Erin, green from his peregrinations, put his head into a lawyer’s office and asked the inmate, “and what do you se J here ? ’ “Block heads,” replied the limb of the iaw. “Och, thin, to be sure,” said Pat, “it, must be a good tlirade, for I see there is but one of them left.’’ We stated in last issue that Mr. C. E. Holiday had gone to Greenville, Ala., to engineer a telegraph office, and that he wouhl make that place his future home. In the above statement we were mistaken. Char.ey returned on last Tuesday and will make Dawson his future home. Now, Charley, don’t make us lie again. New Arrivals— Millinery. On last Monday morning our Superi or Court convened at the Court-house) his Honor, A. Hood, presiding. After the jurors had all been duly sworn by Col. J. H. Guerry, acting Solicitor, the Judge proceeded to charge the Grand Jurors. We did not bear all of the charge, but learn that it was in every respect a good one. The business of the court is progressing rapidly, and from present indications, we think an early adjournment probable Besides the local bar, we notice the following attorneys present: Col’s. Flewellen, Fielder and Clarke, from Cuthbert; Maj. C. B Wooten and Judge D. A Vason of Albany; Col. S. D. Irvin, from Milner, and Rev. B B. Hinton, of Americus. A Card. Under the circumstances, we advise and insist upon our friend, Judge W. T. Campbell, withdrawing bis name from the present canvass for Tax Re ceiver and Collector. Nov. 21, 1878. Many Friends. ' Good Syrup.—Our thanks are due and are hereby tendered to Mr. J. J. Bradley for a gallon of new cane syrup. We have seen several samples of the syrup made this year, and it is all good, but that given to us by Mr. Bradley is the clearest and thickest we have jet seen. The Phonograph.—Edison’s talk ing machine has not yet arrived, but Judge H S. Bell lias all the accounts due the Dawson Journal while the un dersigned was proprietor, and those in debted will oblige by calling at his of fice and talk to him on the subject S. R. Weston. Personal —We acknowledge a very pleasant call on yesterday, from our friend anu former townsman, Mr. Thom as A. Cheatham, who is now in charge of the retail drugstore of Messrs. Hunt, Rankin & Lamar, at Macon. On last Thursday morning Mr. Cheatham was marri and to the accomplished Miss Mat tie Priche’t., of that place, —Rev. Wal ker Lewis, officiating. Mr. C and his bride ha ve been on a visit to friends and relatives here during the past week, and will return to their home this morning We, with a large number of friends, wish them all the good luck possible.— The Telegraph and Messenger, speak ing of the marriage, says : “On Thursday morning last, at the resi dence of Major Richard W. Bonner on First street, occured one of those pleas ant events which leave so many happy memories in their train, in the marriage of Mr. T. A. i heatbaui and Miss Mat ie Prichett, both of Macon. The cere mony was gracefully performed bv Rev. Walker Lewis at seven o’clock, and af ter a very bountiful breakfast, the bri dal couple left on the Southwest rn train for Dawson, the former home of the bridegroom, for a short visit. Mr Cheatham is in charge of the retail dm/ store of Messrs Hunt, Ran' in & Lamar The hearty congratulationsof the friend of the couple are extended and many hopes for their future happiness expres sed.” Fashion’s Follies. The most stylish walking boots have brocaded cloth uppers. Imported dresses are far less trimmed than are American garments. Full blown white roses with delicate yellow centres are favorites. Dresses made of bandana handker chiefs are called Creole dresses. Square trains are considered a trifle more elegant than the fan trains. A pink satin dress ornamented with maroon velvet leaves are elegant. Garnet red braids, cords and orna ments are used on hats and dresses. Fancy gilt buttons are used altogeth er on the plaid suits this season. With garnet tuorquoise blue is more generally used than any other color. A bril iant cherry color is among the shades of red which are to be worn. . Short walking suits are- very short this fall, ending just below the shoe top. Moire, antique and satin, in broad stripes, is a fine combination in rib bons. Belts of seed pearls are very affec tive with silks or satin evening dress es. The eoarso close-fitting straw bon net is much worn for demi-season toil ettes. Plushes of every variety are found among the dress, cloak and hat trim mings. The corduroy velvet of a few years since has again come forward in millin ery. The Madeline is a favorite shape for a round hat. It is becoming to most faces. Bronze-green gloves are worm with suits of that color, but are said to be poisonous. White, pearl gray and cream felt bonnets are most dressy head-gear of the season. All of the singers and actresses have brought home stunning wardrobes from Worth’s. Bias silk frayed ruchings are among the most successful trimmings for even ing dresses The English walking hat seems en dowed with eternal youth ; it is as much in favor as ever. Broad ribbons and galloons, orna mented with sprays of chenille autumn leaves, are new trimings. - , Atlanta, Ga., Nov. 25,1873. Editors Dawson Journal,—‘Gents: The elections are now all over and the swarms of candidates have re turned to their homc-s—some with com missions in tlieir pockets rejoicing in their success, while the larger number who have been disappointed, go away with a sad countenance and a light pocket-book. Friday night last General John B. Gordon gave a banquet to the Gen eral Assembly as an expression of his gratitude for his almost unanimous re-election to the IT. S. Senate. It was a splendid entertainment, given by one of Nature’s noblemen to a lot of fellows who admire, love and al most worship him. The cost of the entertaiinent could not have been lees than five hundred dollars. It is beyond the power of any hu man being to tell when tht Legisla ture will adjourn. The special com mittee to which that matter was re ferred, have not yet made their report. All the members seem to concur in the opinion that we are to have a long qnd tedious session, and that a final adjournment cannot be reached until sometime next year. There is a considerable number of very im portant Bills to be acted upon, while the great mass of them are of little or no consequence. The Representatives from South West Georgia compare favorably witb those from any section of the State. Your immediate and most excellent servant, the Hon. Eli G. Hill, is at his post and is all right—sound, safe, reliable and prudent. There are only 11 Doctors in the House—a pretty good sprinkling of lawyers—the far iners are largely in ‘lie majority, so it they do not make laws to suit them selves, it will not be for he want ot members.
