Mrs. Anthony has just received her fourth lot of hats for this season, which she is selling rapidly and at low prices. He that watches and runs away, Lives to watch another day. Ou ljts Monday night our excelled young friend, li J. Anthony, common ly known as the “Parson,” had occa sion to go to his store at a late hour. It will be remembered that several stores were broken open a lew nights since, and Nick Kenny had been put on the watch. Hearing the Parson go to his store, Niek made his way in that direction. In the distant moonlight the Parson saw the form of Nick, whieh was covered with a heavy overcoat, and both gentlemen suspected that some thing wrong was going on. Nearer and closer Nick went iu the direction of the Parson, who was preparing, as he thought, to catch a thief, and Nick was out on the same business. When within about six feet of each other, the watchman raised his club which the Parson saw, and quick as thought he darted ’round the corner and ran home for his pistol. About this time two ne groes appeared upon the streets, and Nick, thinking a club of thieves was at work, ran off in double quick time after Marshal Avant, who refused to come until Mr. Bussey and Pate Jones had been summoned. All together they re turned, expecting, of course, to have a terrible conflict with a band of robbers. Everything was quiet, and the Parson, who "had bv this time, returned, came up to tell the crowd what he had seen —“a terrible buggar with a huge stick”— -when Nick said, “Humph by George! I saw you and you saw me.” That was enough. Parson and Nick will set up beer for the crowd. Thieves w ill Break Through and Steal One of the boldost roberies ever com mitted in Dawson occurred on last Thursday night. Some person or per sons who arc perfectly familiar with our town, went to Jacob Ellis’ shop and equipped themselves with suitable tools for breaking into houses, at which they were successful in two instances. The miliinery store’s of Mrs. G. L. Mize and Mrs M. M. Anthony were entered on that night aud robbed of such goods as suited the taste of the thieves. The first house broken into, it is supposed, was that of Mrs. Mize. One of the back shutters was bursted off and the window glass broken, through which an entrance was made. Several fine dress es and other millinery goods were stol en. Mr. 3lize, who has a confectionery store in the same room, think > the thieves only stole their supper from him, which consisted of crackers and jellies. The bohl rascals took their time about examiniugdi awers, sln iw cases and eating supper, as the various signs of a tallow candle showed. There must have been more than one person eiinaied in the work, as we don’t think one person would attempt such an act alone. After taking all tiiey wanted from this house, they went to Mrs. Anthonv’s and broke in at the back door. 31 rs. A Veard the poise, but was too much frightened to give the alarm. A trunk of fine ladies shoes wa s; ,en from her, and, per aps, other goods While carelessly using a cau dle in her house, a past-board box fils with trimming caught on fire, will the theives direw into the streets. J wn e rtainly very kind in the rascals not. to burn the house Having supplied the nselves with all the millinery g oils needed, the theives went to Mr. 11. J. Anthony’s store and tried to break in but here they failed. As yet, there is no suspicion as to who the theives are. Our merchants have raised a sum of $75, which is of fered as a reward for the arrest of the guilty parties, with evidence to convict. J list received from Now A orfc a nice line of ladies’ dress goods, wor steds, plaids, marines, etc., for sale very cheap; also, a lot o! fine zephyr silks, at J. lb Gl ims. Municipal Election. Atlanta, Ga., Dec. 9, 1878. Editors Dawson Journal, —Gents : The General Assembly on Thursday, the sth inst., passed a joint resolution bv a two-third vote of all the members elected to both He uses, to adjourn on Friday, the 13th inst., to meet again on the first Wednesday in July, 1879, and continue in session as long as the pub lic interest requires. We are now doing very good work. All hands seem intent on getting through with the pressing and most important part of the business before the day of adjournment. The House finished up the appropriation Act on Saturday last. It is strictly on the line of economy and retrenchment, as marked out by the Constitutional Convention. The general tax Act, as reported by the finance committee, is next in impor tance, and the next thing in order. It proposes to levy a tax of not more tl an three-tenths of one per cent, as an ad valorem tax instead of four-tenth of one per cent, as at present. This, if adopt ed, will he some relief to the tax-pay ers of the state. The specific taxes proposed are about the same as those incorporated in the tax act of 1877. The railroad bills, bills proposing a tax on whiskey, such as the “Bell punch,” the bills fyr taxing dogs, bills propos ing to alter and amend various sections of the Code, and many other general bills, together with all local arid special bills, will necessarily have’to be passed over at present, and ho acted upon and disposed of during the summer session. The great mass of matter that has been introduced during the session, is yet untouched, and it is tlie opinion of idl experienced legislators that the present General Assembly has got more to do, and have to labor under more difficul ties in accomplishing the desired ends, than any ever before assembled in Ga. If all matters that have been, and will liereajter be presented, are attended to as they should he, with mature deliber ation, the summer session cannot ter minate in less than sixty days. The proposition to abolish the Agri cultural Department is creating a con siderable stir among the friends of the Bureau. Fat offices arc in danger of beiug lost. Those who propose to abol ish it think it quite an expensive luxury, and claim that it is not worth to the farming comm uni iy what it cost them to support it, which is the snug little sum of $25,800 per annum. On the other hand, the supporters of the department say that it is the only tiling the State has ever done especially for the farmers, and that it should meet with the ap proval and support of all who are en gaged in agric-ulture’or stock raising.
