Subscribers who are a year or more in
arrears to this office, and who wish
their papers continued through next
year, will please call and settle before
the first day of January.
No Journal Next Week.
As usual, we, the. editors, printers
and devil, of the Dawson journal, pro
pose to take a few days rest; hence,
there will be no paper issued from this
office next week, save a small slip con
taining legal advertisemets. This is a
time honored custom, and, we think, a
good one. Printers, like all other ani
mals, want a little rest during Christ
mas, and they are bound to have it,
Fifty numbers constitute a volume of a
weekly newspaper, and we take a week’s
rest at the middle and end of each year.
We wish all our readers, delinquint
subscribers iucluded, a merry Christ
mas and a happy New Year.
. Carrier’s Address.
Col. James Forsyth Proctor, the
“big little devil” of this office, and
who has, for several months past, made
a faithful carrier, will present his annu
al address to city subscribers on next
Wednesday, the first day of January,
1879. We trust that not one will fail
to appreciate his services and that all
will contibute liberally to his fund.
Be sure that you don’t give him more
than five dollars. He’ll be satisfied
with half that amount from each of his
patrons.
Personal.
Rev. R. W. Dixon and family leave
to-day for their new home at Thomas
ville, Ga. Mr. Dixon has been pastor
of the Methodist Church here for the
past year and, in leaving, we have no
doubt that he takes with him the
good wishes of every man, woman and
child with whom he has become acquain
ted during his stay with us.
Mr. D. J. Ray and Mr. S. W. Den
ton, yl Atlanta, have come , down to
spend Christmas with relatives and
frietids in Terrell county. All are glad
to see them.
Dr. A. L. Holiday, late of Smithville,
has moved to Jonesboro, but does not
intend to forget old friends, as he has
ordered the .Journal sent to him at that
place. The Doctor is a clever gentle
man. We are sorry he is going so far
off, but commend him to the good peo
ple at his new home.
Married.
On the 22nd instant, by Bev. R. W.
Dixon, at the home of the bride’s father,
Prof. W. S. Whitchard, of Sumter coun
ty, and Miss Laura J. Breedlove, eldest
daughtee of Mr. A. W.. Breedlove.
We extend Mr. Whitchard and his
accomplished bride our best wishes for
future happiness and prosperity.
Christmas.
On yesterday the great holiday— 1
common to die Christian world—came
on its annual round. Originally it was
celebrated with thanks and praises up
on the conceded idea that it was the
birthday ot Christ, and is to some ex
tent now among pious people, but the
most of humanity have united in mak
ing it a time for festivities, and often
times debauchery. Wbile the primi
tive idea and practice is to be com
mended, yet we are not prepared to
condemn the modern style of Us cele
bration, when aot carried to excess.—
Thanksgiving" and rejoicings are to be
commended at any time, and occasional
indulgences in fun-malung and frolic
are not to be despised when our moral na
tures, and that of our fellow-men, are
not made to suffer. Custom has set
apart this anniversary for a gala time;
when men shall lay aside their long
faces—forget their business cares and
complications—feast upon the fatted
turkey—make merry with the little
ones, and cherish peace and good will
to all mankind. Here in Dawson our
people have made no extensive prepara
tions for Christmas, yet, in a quiet way,
all seem to be enjoying the occasion.
Look and Bead.
I will sell Dry Goods, Groceries,
Hats, Clothing, Boots and Shoes as
cheap as any house in Dawson or
South West Georgia, of the same
quality of goods. J. B. Ckim.
The latter part of the past week wo

Concert To-night.
Prof. J. W. Beardslee. of Andrew
Female College will give a musical en
tertainment, at the Court-house to
night.
The professor gave a similar enter
tainment here last fall, and the few
that heard it went away delighted.
We were one of the fortunate ones that
heard him on that occasion, and can as
sure every one that his performance to
night will be no dull affair but one that
will entertain, amuse and iuterest. from
beginning to end. We hope our town
will give him a big audience.
Admittance, 25 cents.

An exchange notes the fact that the
lowest price at which cotton has sold in
this country during the last fifty years
was in the spring of 1H45, when it went
as low as four cents per pound. The
highest price paid for it during the
same period, was one dollar and ninety
cents in 1864. It sold as high as fifty
two cents, however, for good money in
1866.
An agricultural paper tells “how to

no ana! ter how he may be dressed.
