Voluntary JOiinilmess for Fifty
Years.
Utica ( V* Y.) Special to the Cincinnati
Enquirer.
Hayes Hivnian, who lived two miles
east of Utica, died to-day, aged sixty
six years. Although possessing the fa
culty of speech, he had not uttered two
consecutive words for fifty years. When
sixteen years old, hearing his father
swear at a member of the family, he
made a vow that he would never speak
again. This vow was kept for seven
years. He then met with an accident,
which bruised the fingers of his left
hand, the pain drawing from him the
exclamation, “Oh !” On but one other
occasion was he heard to speak. This
time the word “See” was called forth
by a snake that crawled over a sleeping
child. A column might be filled by
the recital of Hinman’s eccentricities.
Some of his devices to avoid conversa
tion were crafty in the extreme, lie
was a close student, and lias left a vol
uminous diary during his fifty years of
silence. He leaves a fortune of $24.000
to a nephew, with the admonition, “Keep
your mouth shut.” Notwithstanding
his silence, he was a great favorite in
the neighborhood in which he lived.
A Great Farmer Dead.
Michael L. Sullivant was, not long
ago, known as “the great Illinois farm
er.” He first came into prominence as
the proprietor of “Broadlands,” in Ver
million Cos., 111., considered at that
time one of the largest farms in the
United States. Selling this to Mr. Al
exander in 1867, Mr. Sullivant remov
ed to Ford County and improv
ing an immense tract of land there, com
prising a whole township and more, and
becoming widely known as the Sulli
vant farm. It. numbered 47,000 acres,
and was about eight miles square.—
Much of this vast estate he devoted to
corn-raising, his theory beimj that corn
could be grown with fair profiit at only
fifteen cents a bushel. Five years ago,
it is stated, be owed but $50,000 on
Ins property, while he held $200,000 in
good paper. At that time, in order
more rapidly to improve the estate, Mr.
Sullivant began loaning money of Hi
ram Sibley, in this city, to whom he
finally mortgaged all the land, for large
interests contrasted ill with poor crops
and small prices and stringent times
had their usual disastrous results. Mr.
Sibley came into possession of the Sul
livant farm, and Air. Sullivant made
an assignment of his entire propertv to
cover an indebtedness of obout $1,500,'-
000. For a short time his interest pay
ments ran up to $5,000 a month One
winter it took 200 mules the entire sea
son to haul his corn crop to market, and
even yet he could not meet demands
against him. Last week he died, a
passenger on an Ohio River steamboat,
aged and worse than penniless, another
sud illustration of the poverty and want
that may follow fortune and plenty.
He was called, a good neighbor, an hon
est man and an aole business manager.
Rural Home.
A correspondent of the London
‘Times” says that clerely cooked in
milk and thickened with dour will
cure rheumatism.
Cincinnati seems to be suffering
from an epidemic of embezzlement.
Our Tenure of Life.
Depends in great measure upon our
regard for or neglect of the laws of
health. If we violate them wo can
not expect to “make eld hones ” But
that the span of existence allotted to a
naturally delicate constitution, or one
which l; 5 been shaken hy disease may
bo materially lengthened, )s a f ct of
which wo have daily proof. The vivi
fying and restorative influence of Iloa
tetter’s Stomach Bitters upon a failing
physique a striking illustration of the
powei of judicious medication t>
strengthen the hold on life. Restor
ed digestion, complete assimilation,
renewed appetite, sound repose, these
aro among the henefi's conferred upon
the debilitated ly that supreme reno
vant. With a circulation enriched, a
frame invigorated, and a nervous sys
tem tianquiiizod, the invalid, after a
course of the Bitters, feels that his
life-tenure is no longer the precarious
thing that it was —that he may yet
enjoy a “green old age,”
Consumption Cured.
An old physician, retired from prac
tice, having had placed in his hands
by an East India missionary the for
mula of a simple vego'ahle remedy, for
the speedy and permanent cure for
consumption bronchitis, catarrh, asth
ma, and all throat and lungaffectmns,
also a positive and radical cure for
nervous debility and all nervous com
plaints, after having tes’fd its wonder
ful curative powers in thousands of
cases, has felt it his duty to make it
known to his suffering fellows. Act
uated by this motive, and a desire to
relieve human suffering, I will send
free of charge, to all who desire it,
this recipe, with lull and lections for pie
paring and using, in German,French,
or Eugliah. Se..t hy mail by address
