NEW ARRIVALS-MILLINERY!
Mrs. C. L. Mize has just
received her fourth lot of
Hats for this season > which
she is selling at low prices.
Successful Babbit Hunt.
Friend J. G. Wells, of Brown Sta
tion, who is a mighty clever fellow
stepped in to see us one day last week.
In course of conversation he told us of
a rabbit hunt which he and two other
gentlemen, Messrs. J. G. Joiner and 11.
Bryant, had just made. The grounds
for hunting was Ivinchafoonee swamp,
and without dogs, the “boys” proceed
ed, and when their work was ended they
counted thirty-two rabbits which they
bad killed in a very short time,—they
didn’t count the young ’uns. Mr. W.
says he never saw so many rabbits in
all of his life. The woods are thick
with them.
The Excursion.
On last Sunday it was unanimously
decided by the Sabbath-schools to go
on an excursion to Andersonville early
in May, provided suitable arrangements
can be made with the railroads The
proposition made by the Superentend
ent of the the road, we think, very
reasonable, and if the sum ($l5O 00)
can be raised, five coaches will be sent
down on Thursday evening a nit remain
ever till Friday morning May '2nd, the
time which has been decided upon for
the excursion. All those who want to ■
go can do so by buying a ticket at once.
A week’s notice must be given the
Railroad Company; hence, it is desired
that all purchase tickets as soon as pos
sible, the price of which is 50 cents,
each, for the trip.
A Credit to Our City.
'flie Dawson Carriage works, T.
J. Hart, proprietor, sells his buggies
as fast as he can make them. He
has manj orders ahead, and his pric
es are satisfactory.
The Albany Fair.
The third fair of the Southwest Geor
gia Industrial Association will be held
at their grounds in Albauy on the 22nd
and 23d days of May. The premium
list is very full and complete and the
programme very attractive. Liberal
premiums are offered for all the pro
ducts of the farm, garden and louse
hold, large collections of which will,
doubtless, be on exhibition, and for the
further entertainment of visitors tlwc
will be horse races, running and trot
ting, boat-races, a grand military dis
play, trap-shooting,—a tournament,etc.
We presume that Terrell county will,
as usual, seud down a good delegation.
I)r. W. C. Kendrick, rf Webster
county, was in town on Tuesday and
informed us that the crop prospects in
his county are quite cheering. The
Doctor is bending all of his energy in
that direction now. He has not seen
any rust in the wheat as yet. He re
ports that crops are very promising.
MRS. C. L. MIZE
Has in stock a nice assortment

Misses; also cheaper grades.
She earnestly solicits the pat
ronage of the Laities generally.
We don’t think the peaches were
injured by the late frosts. We predict
a good crop of them this year. We
learn that the prospects for a large
blackberry crop .are very flattering. If
that be true, we poor editors will not
perish.

The melodious voice of the frog is
now heard in the distant marshes.
Everybody, but us and several oth
ers, have bought new suits of clothes.
It is rather early to go in swimming
but some of the town boys will do it.
There is a large number of hogs in
Dawson, and fleas, —world without end.
The rust has made its appearance in
some of the wheat patches about town.
Friend T. A. Cheatham and lady, of
Macon, are on a visit to friends and
relatives in the city.
The finances of the city council are
increasing. Niggers will fight. It’s
interesting for Nick Kenney.
A large lot of good clothing just
received and for sale cheap by A. J.
Baldwin & Cos.
Mr. AA r . R. Baldwin, our clever tax re
ceiver, is now making his first round.
See his notice in another column.
Next Saturday is the '2Gth, decora
tion day. That sacred day will not be
observed in Dawson.
A number of young ladies from
abroad are visiting the city. The young
gentlemen are having a large time.
Al, the ladies are invited to call at
Miss A. B. Smith’s and examine her
stock of new millinery goods.
At last Speight Baldwin has mar
ried. He did well, too. Jno. Fulton,
Sam Lee and Bob Christie ought to
follow suit.
A better and larger lot of embroid
ery than ever brought to Dawson,
at A. J. Baldwin & Co’s.
Friend .T. AA r . Johnston is a popular
fellow. He was unanimously elected
President of the whittling club last
week.
Prof. Lowrey and Mr. AA r . N. Thorn
ton have both bought fine horses and
buggies recently. There is quite a
number of fine horses in our town now.
Be sure to go on the excursion on
the 2nd of May. Price for round trip
only 50 cents. All the tickets must
be sold by to-morrow morning.
Several new subscribers, good men,
too, have been added to our subscrip
tion list since last issue The circula
tion if the Journal is now very good.
The cotton and corn crops are unus
ually backward for this season of the
year. The recent heavy rains were
very damaging.
B. F. Rumney, at Hart’s shop, is
prepared to repair furniture of ail
kinds. If you have any work in that
line call on him.
w e are very sory indeed to know
that memorial day—2oth instant—will
not be observed in Dawson. In this
respect our city is very much behind
other small towns in the state.

Due notice will be given.
Twelve persons have joined the Meth
odist Church since the protracted meet
ing begun. The ordinance of baptism
was administered to six applicants on
Sunday night,—the others having been
baptised in infancy.
Miss A. B. Smith has just returned
from the markets with a nice and
well selected stock of millinery goods.
Call and examine them.
The cotton crop of 1878 has about
been disposed of. We notice but little
coming intoiown. The cotton-buyer can
now pause and pick the lint off of his
clothes.
We are now at work on the Court
calendar. Court begins on the 4th
Monday in May. There are about 120
civil cases for trial. The criminal dock
et will be light.
Mr. It. R. Lewis, of this city, has
invented a guano distributer. A pat
ent has been applied for. We have not
seen the instrument at work, but from
a discretion given us, we think it
well worthy of a patent.
The Albany Spring Fair will he on
the 22nd and 23rd of May. Dawson
will be well represented down there.
We heard two gentlemen, both of whom
own fine horses, say they were going to
send their stock to the fair.
Ben Washington, col., was arrested
here on last Monday by our Marshall
and Mr. P. W. Jones, on a charge of
stealing clothing in Lee county.
The officers had a good race after the
aforesaid Binjamine.
Laura Byrd and Margrett Gibson,
two colored “Belles,” had a fight on
Monday. They “fit like eats and dogs,”
and the fur flew on all sides. The par

HYMENEAL.
Marriage of Mr. L. S. Baldwin.
Last evening was frought with an
eventful and joyous episode in the ca
rer of our friend, Mu. Si-eight Bald
win, a worthy and enterprising young
merchant of our town. On that eve
ning, at half past four o’clock, the mar
riage rites were solemized between him
self and the “idol of bis heart,’’ Miss
Mary, the amiable and accomplished
daughter of Mu. N.’ AV r . Dozier. The
marriage took place at the residence of
the bride’s father, on Lee Street, and
was witnessed by a few special friends
and relatives—it was our good fortune
to be among that number. Rev. AY.
M. Hayes, pastor of the M. E. Church
here, was the officiating minister who
uttered the magical words which bound
two hearts and lives together and made
of them “man and wife.” A more im
pressive marriage ceremony we have
seldom witnessed, and at its conclusion
the Reverend gentleman offered up an
earnest prayer to the Great Author of
marriage, beseeching His divine guid
ance to lead them gently down the vale
of life, and to direct their footsteps in
to the paths of peace. After the Gordi
an knot was tied and the congratulations
extended, the guest were invited to the
dining hall where an elegant supper was
served. AA r e wish Mr. Baldwin and
his young bride a long life of usefulness
and happiness.
ORANGE BLOSSOMS.
Brilliant AYedding.—Beautiful Scene,
Love, Music and Flowers.
Mr. A. J. Carver, jr., of Eufaula,
Ala., a young gentlemen well and fa
vorably known in Dawson, was married
at the Baptist Church at 8:30 last even
ing to Miss Blue E. Rogers, eldest
daeghterof Judge Ha:r-on Rogers, of
our city. The contemplated marriage
having been announced from the pulpit
on Sunday, everybody knew the time,
the place and the hour. The town
turned out freely, and the house was
well packed. Entering the Church we
were charmed and somewhat dazed by
the soft, mellow light that shone upon
the scene of surpassing .beauty. AYe
never saw the Church trimmed up more
appropriately or handsomely. Hanging
gracefully from the arch above the pul-
pit were beautiful fastoons of evergreen,
while the pulpit and altar furniture
were draped in flowers of rarest beauty,
mingling their bright colors in a most
bewitching manner.
Soon the attendants entered and took
their respective places, forming a semi
circle around the altar, followed by the
manly bridegroom with his beautiful,
trusting bride upon his arm. As the
bridal party entered, the organ answer
ed to the artistic touch of Mrs. J. li.
Guerry, and pealed forth an appropri
ate air. The attendants were : Messrs.
A. B. McKinzie and AV. F. Dent, of
Eufaula, Ala., AY. A. Janes, L. 11.
Rogers, G. M. Roberts and E. C. Pas
chal, Dawson. The ladies were : Misses
Bottie Tharpe, Macon ; Carrie Stewart,
Americus ; Susie Morris, Georgetown ;
Carrie Hill, Terrell county; Nora Al
len and Dixie Cheatham, Dawson.
Messrs. J D Laiug and C. E. Holli
day acted as ushers.
Beaching the altar, Mr. Carver and
Miss Rogers were met by Rev. J. A.
Ivev, the beloved pastor, tvho proceeded,
according to the solemn ritual of the
Church, to pronounce them “man and
wife.” After the cermony, the liappv
pair marched down the other aisle, amid
the congratulations of friends, and left
the Church for the home of the bride’s
parents, where, we learn, a sumtuous
repast awaited them.
May their brightest dreams of wed
ded bliss all be fully realized.
After the ceremony, we could’t re
sist the temptation to inspect more close
ly the array of flowers, and were charm
ed with the elegance of the whole ar
rangement. We would like to give a
detailed description of the scene here,
but the lateness of the hour and a lack
of space forbids. We learn that Mr.
C. E. Holliday decorated the Church,
and we must say that it reflected much
credit upon his good taste and judgment.
