Cow Thieves in Miller.
Miller Co.,Ga., Apr. 3, 1.579.
Editor Early County Yews —Dear Sir
—Knowing that you take a deep inter
est in the farming and stock raising en
terprises of our section, I drop you a
few lines to inform you there are cow
thieves in our laud. On Sunday morn
ing, the 30th of March, Mr. Freeman
was walking around my premises when
he discovered a man driving a bunch ot
cows and calves. lie went across the
woods and met up with the man and
informed him that the cattle he was
driving were Mr. Ezekiel Hornsby’s,
and that they were in his mark and
brand. The man said he was from away
up in Miller county and was driving the
cattle to the forks of FI inland Chattahoo
chee rivers, and that they were his cat
tle. He then drove on the cattle. Mr.
Freeman came immediately to the house
and notified me of the facts. I,iucom
pany with Freeman and my son, pursu
ed the thief and found he was running
the cattle in a different direction from
what he said he was going, and when
we overtook him he was two miles from
my place. He claimed the cattle when
I came up with him. 1 informed him
that they were my cattle and he could
not drive them any farther. He then
said if they were mine I could take them.
I said to him he had to go back with
me; he replied no, not him. He pitch
ed out at full speed, and the chase
commenced. I had no weapon and could
not take the man a prisoner. 1 struck
him several severe blow's in the chase,
but did not throw him from his horse .
he finally made his escape, but lost his
sack with his rations and that of his
horse. He is a stout man, red com
plexion, with sandy hair and red beard;
would weigh 150 to 165 lbs; between
25 and 30 years of age: was riding a
fine bay horse: had a white sack on the
saddle containing half a bushel shelled
corn, some bread and bacon, which I
now have.
I hope, for the interest of those who [
own stock in our section, that you will
give a notice of this itinerant cow thief
so they may be on guard, and someone
may be able to arrest him and bring him
to justice. Very Respectfully Yours*
Ezekiel Hornsby.
Giving and Receiving tlie Cohl-
Shoulder.
If the art of giving the cold shoul
der is woi thy of acquirement, much
more so is that of receiving it judici
ously. It is quite possible to endure
its application with such becoming
dignity that the aggressor comes off
decidedly second best in the encoun
ter. Perhaps amused Indifference
forms the most effective armor against
its thrusts, for few things so discon
cert an enemy as to find his attacks
affording diversion to his antagonist.
The probability in such a case is Ibai
lie will either lose his temper an I
thus put himself immediately in the
wrong, or else surrender 'uncondition
ally on perceiving the absurdity of the
situation. It is said that people who
have an incordiuate fear of infectious
diseases are more susceptible ot them
than others; and in the same manner,
those who a.e always dreading d.e
cold shoulder are most vulnerable to
that kind of attack. Indeed men who
live in perpetual fear of slights fioro
others become so constrained in their
manner that it is extremely difficult
for their friends to treat them with
geniality. The coldest manneied peo
ple are frequently those who look for
most warmth ftoni others; and when
their expectations aro not gratified,
they forget the coolness they meet
with is but a dim reflection of their
owd. But, miserable as is the state
of persons who suffer from over-sensi
tiveness, it is to be preferred to that
of the hitdeooi wretches who aro im
pervious to the sternest on slaughts of
the cold shoulder. There aro those
who are so convinced of their own at
tractiveness that nothing willpursuade
them that they are objects of special
aversion. If they observe that the
manner of an acquaintance is unusu
ally cold, they attribute it to dyspepsia
or to a depreciation in tbevhlue of his
investments, — English Nagazine -

Sawdust in Mortar.
Some time since the use of sawdust
in mortar was recommended as supe
rior even to hair for the prevention of
cracking and subsequent peeling off
of rough casing under the action of
storms and i'rosU Someone of the
name of Siehr says that his own house
exposed to prolonged storms on the
aeacoas*, had pieces of mortar to be
renewed each spring; and after trying
without effect a number of substances
to prevent it, ha found sawdust per
fectly satisfactory. It was first thor
oughly dried, and aifced through an
ordinary grain-seive, to remove the
larger particles. The mortar was
made by mixing one part of cement,
two of lime, two of sawdust, and five
of sharp sand, tho sawdust being firs (
well mixed dry with the cement and
