‘No man .shall ever kiss me except
my future husband,’ she said, as he
was about lea\ ing her at the gate,
‘Suppose I agree to be your future —.
Why then I’ll kiss you, ‘she replied
eagerly, and she did. Her mother
was informed that he had proposed,
and the old lady called around next
day to fasten matters, and before he
knew it he was eternally booked. It
was a mean advantage, but a bird in
the hand is worth two on the front

Put a beggar on horseback and he’ll
ride to the d—l,’ is an old saying, of
which the country has had a con
vincing illustration. Hayes, in an
equally striking manner, is demonstrat
ing the fact that, a man who obtains
power by fraud is capable of doing the
same tiling.
Miss Virginia Ilicks, a young lady
of Wyandotte, ludian Territory, was
thrown from her saddle by her horse
the other day. She struck on her head
and a high tortoise shell comb which
was in her hair was driven into the
brain, causing almost instant death.
When placed under a microscope the
sting of a bee presents a polish of due
lling beauty, but when placed in the
end of a man's nose it takes on the
semblance of a rat-tail file dipped into
vitriol, and brings out words as rough
as a grindstone.
At least one Chicago miner has
made a great success in Leadville. In
five weeks ending May 3, he took out
$16,840 with no other mining imple

and a Derringer pistol.
“What,” asks a correspondent, “is

THE SUN FOR 1879
The Sun will be printed every day during
the year to comr. Its purpose and method
will be the same as in the past: To present
all t e news in a readable shape, and to teil
the truth though the heavens fall.
The Scn has been, is, and wil continue
to be independent of everybody and every
thing save the Truth and its own convictions
of duty. That is the only policy which an
honest newspaper need have. That is the
policy which baa won for this newspaper,
the cot tide rce and fiiendship <f a wider
constituency than was ever eijoyed by any
other American Journal.
The Son is the newspaper for the people.
It is not for the rich man against the poor,
or for the poor man against the rich man,
but it seeks to do equal justice to all inter
esis in the ennimunity It i- not il e organ
of any person, class, sect or party There
need be no mysteiy about its loves and hates
It is for the honest man against the rogues
every time. It is for the honest Democrat
as against the dishonest Republican, and for
the honest Kepublicnn as against the dis
honest Democrat It does not take its Cue
from the utter ances of any politician or po
litical organization. It gives its support un
reservedly when men or measro es are in
agreement with the Constitution and with
the principles upon which the Republic was
founded for the people. Whenever the
Constitution and constitutional principles
are violated, as in the outrageous conspiracy
of 1876, hv which a man not elected was
placed n the President's offic \ wbcie he
etii: aius, it speaks out for the right.
That is the Sun's idea of independence. In
tnis respect there will be no change in its
programme for 1879.
The Son has fairly earned the hearty ha
tred of rascais, frauds, and humbugs of all
orts and siz.-s. It hopes to desetve that
hatred not less in the year 1879, than in 78,
77, or any year gone by. The Son will con
tinue to shine on the wicked with unmitiga
ted brightness.
While the lessons of the past should be
constantly kept before the people. The Son
does not propose to mako itself is 1879 a
magazine of ancient history. It is printed
for the men and women of to-day, whose
concern is chirfly with the affairs of to-day.
It has both the disposition and the ability
to affjrd its readers the promptest, fullest
and most accurate intelligence of whatever
in the wide world is worth attention. To this
end th resources belonged to well estab
lished prosperity will he liberally employed
The present disjointed condition of par-
ies in this country, and the uncertainly of
the future, leno an extraordinary significat.ee
to the events of the coming year. The
discussions of the press, the debates and
acts of Congress, and the moremen's of the
leaders in every section of the Republic
will have a direc bear ng on the Presiden
tial election of 1830, an event which uust
be regarded with the roost anxious interes l
by eve-y patriotic American, whatever hie
political ideas or allegiance. To these ele
ments of iuteieet may be added the proba
hility that the Democrats will control both
housas of Congress, the increasing feebleness
of the fraudulent Administration, and the
spread nnd strengthening everywhete of a
healthy abhor nee of fraud in any form. To
present with accuracy and clearness the ex
act situation in each of its varying phases,
and to exponnd, according to its well known
methods, the principles that should guide us
through the labyrinth, will be an important
part ot The Sun's work for 1879.
We have the means of making The Sun,
as a political, litery and a general newspa
per, more entertaing aDd more useful than
ever before, and we mean to apply them

HOLLOWAY'S PILLS.
Nervous Disorders.
What s more fearful !han a breaking down
of the r rvous system? To be excitable or
ueivous in a small degree is most distressing
for where can a remedy be found? This is
one: drink but little wine, beer, or spirits,
or far better, none; take no coffee, weak
tea being preferable; get all the fresh air
you can; take three o" lour Pdls every
nigh'; eat plenty of solids, avoiding the tt e
of slops; and if ther ' golden rules are fo'-
lowed, you will be happy in mind and strong j
in body, and forget you have any nerves.
Mothers and Daughters.
If there is one thing more than another
for which these Pills are so famous, it is their
putifying properties, especially their power ;
of clensing the blood from all impurities;
and removing dangerous and suspended
secretions. Univ-rsally adopted as the one
grand remedy for female complaints, they
never fai 1 , never weaken the system, and
always bring about what is required.
Sick Headaches and Want of Appetite
These feelings which so sadden us, most
frequently ati-e from annoynces or trouble,
from obstructed perspiration, 01 from eating
and drinking what is unfit for us thus disor
dering the liver and stomaeh. These organs
must be regulated if you wish to be well.
The Pills, if taken according to the printed
instructions, will quickly restore a healthy
action to both liver and stomach, whence
follow, as a natural consequence, a good ap
petite and a clear head. In the East and
West Indies scarcely any other medicine is
ever used for these disorders.
Httw to be Strong.
Never let the bowels be either confined or
unduly acted upon. It may appear singu*
lar that Holloway's Pills should be recom
mended for a run upon the bowels, many
persous supposing that they would increase
relaxation. This is a great mistake, howev
et; for these Pills will immediately correct
the liver and stop every kind of bowel com
plaint. In warm climate* thousands of lives
have been saved by the use of ibis medicine
| which, in all cases, gives tone and vigor to
the whole organic system, however derang
ed; health and strength following as a mats
| ter of course. The appetite, too, is won
iderfullr increased by the use of these Pills,
■combined in the use of solid in preference
to fluid diet. Animal food is' better than
broths and stews. By removing acrid, fer
; m nted, or other impure homors from the
' liver, stomnch, or biood, the cause of dysen
; terv, diarrlce , and other bowell complaints
'is expelled. The result is, that the diatur
! bance is arrested, and the action of the
, bowels becomes regular. Nothing will stop
the relaxation of the bowels so quickly as
this fine correcting medicine.
Disorders ot the Kidnpys.
In all diseases affecting these organs,
whether they secrete too much or too little
water: or whether they be affl eted with
stone or grume!, or with ashes or pains set
tlea in the loins over the regions of the kid
neys, these P.lls should betaken accoiding
to the printed directions, and the Ointment
should be wei! rubbed into the small ot the
back at bedtime. This treatment w II give
almost immediate reli i when all menus
have failed.
For Stow sells out of Order,
No medicine will fo tffec*ullv improve
the tone oi the stomach as these Pill'; they
remove all aciditv, occasioned either by in
temperance or improper diet. They reach
the liver and reduce it to a healthy action;
they are wonderfully efficacious in case ot
spasms, in fact thev never fail in caring all
disorders of the liver *r;d stomach.
