That Examination.
By request of Rev. W. C. Gaines,
pastor of the A. M. E. Church, we,
with several friends, witnessed a part
of the closing exercises of the colored
school, which was tought during the past
several months by Prof. Ethridge, in
the Church building. At 12 o’clock on
Friday a hack, which was provided by
our colored friends, took us out there.
On arriving at the Church our crowd,
(six in number), were very kindly invi
ted to parson Gaines’ residence. We
were there met by a number of men
and women who seemed really proud of
our presence, and did everything in
their power to rnuko our visit a pleas
ant one. We were then conducted into
a tastily arranged dining hall, where
pictures and flowers hung on either
wall, and before us was spread a dinner
that would have done credit to the
more pretentious. We desire, just
here, in behalf of our party, to return
sincere thanks to parson Gaines and
his wife for the excellent dinner and the
kind treatment we received while at
their house. After dinner we went to
thechurdi to hear the pupils of the
school examined. We found there some
sixty or seventy pupils, besides a large
number of patrons and friends. The
exercises opened with a song (which
was admirably sung), and then the ex
amination commenced. Order reigned
supreme, and everything was conducted
in a way that pleased and surprised all
whites present We were surprised to
note the rapid progress which the col
ored children are making. The classes
in spelling, reading and grammar did
well, and while some of the pupils were
very dull, a majority of them were ex
ceedingly bright and quick to answer.
The two classes in mathematics sur
prised us all, —made us feel like we
ought to be school boys again. All in
all, the examination was very creditable,
and we are glad to know that our color
ed people are tiying to enlighten the
rising generation.
After the examination exercises were
closed, parson Gaines addressed the
crowd in quite a neat and appropriate
speech, and then, by unanimous vote,
the whites were thanked for their pres
ence on the occasion. In behalf of our
party, Col. J. G. Parks replied in a 20
minute speech, and when he had finish
ed iiis hearers cheered long and loud.
.Judge Bell, Col. Guerry and Commis
sioner Lennard followed with short Out
appropriate speeches. Mr. A. J. Bald
win and the writer were then called upon
to speak, but they could’t, —they were
too full of—dinner.
In conclusion we will say that a party
of white men were never more kindly
received, or more hospitably treated (all
things considered) than we were on last
Friday. We are glad we w cut.

The Testimony
OF THE WHOLE WORLD,
Holloway’s Ointment.
Bud Leg?, Bad Breasts, Sores and Ulcers.
An, description of sores are remedial by
the proper and dilliger.t use of this inesti
mable preparation. To attempt to cure bad
legs by plastering the edges of the wound
together is folly; for should the skin uni'e,
a boggv diseased condi'ion remains under
neath to break out with tenfold tuiy in a few
days. The only rational and successful
treatment, a-, indicated by nature, is to re
duce Ihe inflammation iu and about the
wound at,d to soothe the neighboring pai ts
by rubbing in plenty of the Ointment, as
salt is forced into meat. This Will cause the
malignant burners to be drained off from tne
bard, swollen, and d.‘colored parts round
about the Wound, sore or ulcer, and when
there humors are removed, the wounds
themselves will soon heel", warm bread and
water poultices applied over the affected
parts, alter the Ointment lias been well rub
bed In, Will soothe and soften the same and
gently assist the cure. There is a descrip
tion of ulcer, sore and swelling, which need
not be named here, attendant upon the lol
lies of yuUth, and (or which this Ointment
is u;gently recommended ns a sovereign
remedy. In curing such poison us son sit
never fails to restore the syßtem to a healthy
state if the Pills bo taken according to the
printed instructions.
Diphtheria, Ulcerated Sore Throat,
Scarlet and other Fevers.
Any of the above diseases may be cured
by well rubbing the Ointment three times a
day into the cuest, throat, and neck of the
patiom; it will soon penetrate and give im
mediate relief. Medicine taken by the
mouth must operate npon the whole syßtem
ere its influence can be felt in any local part,
whereas the Ointment will do its wotk at
once. Whoever tries the unguent in the
above manner for the diseases named, or
any similar disorders affecting the cb stand
throat, will find themselves relieved as bv a
charm. All sufferers from these complaints
should cnve'op the tnruat at bedtime in a
lirge bread and water poultice, after the
Ointment lias been well rubbed i,; it will
greatly assist the cure of the throat and
chest. To allay the fever and letsen the
infl irnmation, eight or ten Pills should be
taken night and morning. The Ointment
will r rodure perspiralioD, the grand essen
tial in all ernes of levers, sore throats, or
where there might be an oppression of the
Cl cut, either from asthma or other causes.
Files, Fistulas, Strictures.
The anove class of complaints will be re
moved by nightly fomenting the parts with
warm water, and then by most rffectuully
rubbing In the Ointtoent,’ Persons Suffering
from these direful complaints chould lose
uat a moment in arresting their progress It
should l>e understood that it is not snffici, nt
mprelv to smpa r the Ointment an the . fleet
ed parts, but it must be well rubbed in for a
considi rable time two or three titties a day,
that it may be taken irtv the svstem, whence
it will remove any 1 idde sore or wound as
effectually as thou, h pa' able to the eye.
There again bread and .vater poultices, alter
the rubbing in of the Ointment, will do great
seivice. This is the only sure treatment
lor females, cases of career iu the -tomacb,
or where there may be a general bearing
down.
Sores and Dicers.
Blotches, as al-o swellings, can, with cots
tainty, be radically cured if the Ointment be
used freely, and the Pills be taken night
and morning, as recommended in the prir
ted instructions. When treated in any other
way they only dey up in brie pi ic t to break
out iu an other; whereas this Ointmo t will
remove the humor from the System, and
leave the patient a vigoroui aid healthy be
ing. It will require time with the use of the
Pills to insure a lasting cure.
Dropsical Swellings, Paralysis, and
Stilf Joints,
Although the above complaints differ
wid ly in their origin and nature, yet they
all require local treatment. Many ol the
worst cases of such diseases will yield in a
corpantively shoit space ot time when this
Ointment is diligently rubbed into the parts
affected, rvbit after eviry Blher means have
failed. In all seriaus maladies the Pills
should be taken according to the printed
directions accompanying eafch box.
Both the Ore uncut and Pills should be
