SMALL-SHOT.
Bat shooting is now in order.
Summer colds are now in vogue.
We want 5000 more cash subscribers.
Well, we do.
A tremendous rain fell hero yester
day afternoon.
The watermelon and peach crops have
about played out.
We hear no complaint of the cotton
catterpillar in this section.
We have had several good showers of
rain since our last issue.
Rev. W. M. Ilayes is holding a pro
tracted meeting at Smithville.
The little boy flieth the kite, and we
fear somebody’s horse will run away.

Wo hear of some sickness oelow town.
Asa general thing our county is very
healthy.
We just rise to remind you to watch
your premises closely. Rogues are
nearly ripe.
Six persons joined the Dawson Bap
tist'Church last Saturday,—five by let
ter and one by profession.
The delegates from this county to the
agricultural convention Itave returned.
They report a pleasant trip.
The weather has been delightful for
the past few days. Cover was comfort
able in the mornings.
Our merchants are preparing for big
trade the coming fall. They will have
unusually large stocks of goods.
We are prepared to do Job Printing
neatly and cheaply. Please hand in
your orders before the busy season opens.

Our gardeners have been sowing tur
nips since the rains. Remember and
plant enough for that old cow and the
pigs.
Mr. T. A. Cheatham, of Macon, is
on a visit to friends and relatives in
the city. Tom has many friends here,
and they are always glad to have him
with them.
Avery large rattlesnake was killed
near town on last Friday. Another
large one was seen in Mr. Dozier’s pea
patch on Monday! They are said to be
quite numerous this year.
Go to Mrs. M. M. Anthony’s to get
fashionable millineary at low prices!
also to have your dresses made in the
latest styles at reasonable rates. Pa

Dr. C. A. Cheatham, of this city, re
turned a few days ago from Atlanta,
whither he had been summoned by tel
egraph to visit a patient.
Everybody and the rest of mankind
must bring their cotton to Dawson this
season. Our buyers are determined to
pay the very highest price for the stuff,
and, we guess we w ll have warehouses
enough to take care of it.
We return sincere thanks to our jolly
old friend, JudgeS. J. Thomas, fora
basket of nice grapesalso for a half
bushel of splendid peaches, which lie
sent to us last week. The Judge s
kindness is appreciated by the entire
office force.
Kemoved.
I have removed my stock of Goods

Gone to New York.
Capt. T. M. Jones, of the new firm
of Jones & Paschal, left for New York
on last Monday, to buy a large stock of
goods. He will be gone about three
weeks.
Apprentice Wanted.
Wo want a boy between the ages of
12 and 16, to learn the printing busi
ness. Applicants must have a fair
knowledge of spelling, reading and
writing. Must come well recommended.
Communication.
We have received from Rev. G. IV.
Cook a communication relative to his
case of lung disease .nd the manner in
which be was cured. Our space and
the length of the article forbids its pub
lication at present. It will be sufficient
for us to state that he attributes bis
cure, (under the blessings of Divine
Providence) to Dr. Cheatham s treat
ment, and wishes his friends, who may
be similarly affected, to apply Vo the
doctor for treatment.
New Bales.
Messrs. Dozier & Stevens, warehouse
men of this place, received two bales of
the new crop of cotton last week. The
first hale was raised by Lowrey & Wall
and the second by Rogers, Melton &
\V ilkerson. Our buyers seem deter
mined to pay the very highest market
price tor the staple.
Married.
Yesterday at 12 o'clock the marriage
rites were solemnized between Mr. Jno
R. Mercer, of Leary, and Miss Ella R.
Perry, only daughter of Mr. J. B. Perry
of this city,—Rev. W. M. Ilayes, offi
ciating.
At the appointed hour a large num
ber of friends assembled to witness the
ceremony and to offer congratulations
and good wishes. Mr. Mercer and his
young bride left on the 2 o’clock train
for New York, on a bridal trip.
Our Schools.
We are glad to learn that our Male
andFemale sehoolsopened so auspicious
ly on last Mouday morning. Several
young ladies and gentlemen from abroad
have already arrived, and a number of
others are expected. For good schools
our town is hard to equal in Southwest
Georgia. The teachers are competent,
courteous, but firm. Those who have
sons or daughters to educate could do
no better than to send them here. The
moral influences of our town can not
be surpassed, the water is excellent, and
we boast of remarkably good health.
More Stealing.
We learn that a whosesale robbery
was committed at Mr. D. Bigelow’s
about two miles southwest from town,
on Saturday night of last week. While
the family were asleep some rogue en
tered the house and stole a quantity of
meat, meal, sugar, coffee, crockery,
silver spoons, knives, forks, etc. As
soon as the robbery was discovered, Mr.
Bigelow sued out a search warrant and,
with officers, proceeded to the house of
the notorious Tom Singleton, (father of
Shade,) where the stolen goods were
found. Tom, we understand, met the
officers at the door, but when the search
commenced he had business out of doors
and, notwithstanding the efforts of the
officers, he made good his escape.
This negro is said to he an accom
plished rogue, and it is to be hoped that
he he will be captured and turned over
to justice.
Parties desiring a good steam en
gine for ginning or other purposes
would do well to call on or address
A. J. Baldwin & Cos., Dawson, (La.,
before buying. They are agents lor
one ot the best Manufacturing Co.’s
in the U. S. Catalogues sent on ap
plication.
We had a call not long since from a
ministerial friend whom we had not seen
in some time. When we asked about
his family and the number composing
it, he remarked he was holding a very
pretty hand, “a pair of Queens and
three Jacks." “The pot’s yours,’
we replied, and let him take ic.
We coppy the above from the Early’
County JVews and respectfully refer it
to the members of the Methodist church
at this place.

Editors Dawson Journal:
Those of y our readers who are able
to take a daily paper are doubtless well
posted in regard to the actings and do
jugs about the capitol, but there are
many of your subscribers who only
read weekly papers, and it is for their
benefit that I write.
Saturday last the House of Repre
sentatives appeared in a body before the
bar of the Seuate and formally present
ed articles of impeachment against W .
L. Goldsmith, comptroller-general, of
this state, for high crimes and misde
meanors in office. He has many warm
friends and sympathizers in the city and
in the legislature. lie has also employed
able counsel. It is not yet known when
the trial will begin. It is understood
that counsel for defense will ask for a
week or ten days’ time to prepare their
case. The posecuting attorneys cn the
part of the House are ready to begin
the prosecution, and I think Chief Jus
tice Warner, whom it is expected will
preside over the trial, is now ready and
says he hopes to get through in four
weeks.
The investigation by the different
committees is taking a wider range than
was at first expected. The attorney
general has been requested to explain
in regard to some complaints made
against him for alleged compromises in
certain State claims and the appropriation
of the funds to his own private purposes.
The physician to the penitentiary,
the only man in Georgia who stands be
tween the principal keeper of the peni
tentiary and the convicts, as the 1-ieud
of the convicts, has been openly accus
ed (and by men of great influence) of
intoxication and other had conduct
while in the discharge of his official
duties.
There is considerable talk about the
fee paid to W- 0. Tuggle by Governor
Colquitt The amount paid Tuggle for
a few weeks’ work was SIO,BOO, which
amount Col. James A. Green claims
was illegally paid to Tuggle, as he
(Green) was the proper agent for the
collection of this claim, made so By an
act of the legislature, which is true.
He, therefore, openly and boldly char
ges Colquitt with treating him badly.
Col. Graeu is now before a special com
mittee of three, whose duty it is to ex
amine into all the hicts and report to
the House.
The bill to repeal all laws on the
subject of inspection of commercial
fertilizers was warmly discussed in the
House on Thursday last, and when the
vote was taken the yeas and nays were
ordered and 70 votes recorded for, and
70 against the repeal. The Speaker
gave the deciding vote against the bill
and it was lost. But on Friday morning a
motion to reconsider brought about con
siderable debate, and motion prevailed
by a majority of 4 votes, though, as it
takes 88 votes to pass the bill, the
friends of the measure have but little
hope of success, in this case, as in the
agricultural department. A large ma
jority of the farmers voted against the
inspection, while professional men and
members from the cities and the guano
agents sustained the bureau and inspec
tion acts.
The bill to regulate and equalize
ra'lroad freights and passage is the spe
cial order for this day. The bill for
the lease of the Macon & Brunswick
railroad will be acted on iu the House
soon and will, I think, become a law,
and if so, will do more to break the
power and monopoly of the Central
Railroad Company than anything else
that could oe done in that direction.
From the present temper of the
House it would seem that the days of
whitewashing in high or low places was
about over. The Augean stable must
be cleansed, and the General Assembly
is liktly to prove herself a Hercules
equal to the task. Georgia needs a good
financier at the helm, and the sooner
the fact is recognized and acted upon
the better for the tax-payers of the
State. K.
