COTTON MARKET REPORT.
Our cotton market opens at 10c
for middlings. Receipts to date of
the new crop about 25 bales. Same
time last year 250 bales had been re
ceived. <
SMALL-SHOT.
Hurry up and pick that cotton.
Cotton is opening rapidly since the
rains.
Sunday was a real rainy day. No
services in town in the forenoon.
The recent rains have had a good ef
fect on peas, potatoes and turnips.
Our market is now pretty well sup
plied with nice beef, mutton and kid.
Ask your merchant for Nothing man
ufactured by Edwin Hates & Cos., N. Y.
From what we can learn the corn
crop is better than war at first expect
ed.
Our warehousemen have thrown open
their doors and are now ready for busi
ness.
Dawson will do a good business this
fall. The merchants are determined to
sell goods cheap.
Dawson cows seem to be “stuck up’’
of late. They don't come home very
regularly.
Notice our cotton market report this
week. We will give the quotations
during the season.
Mr. G. W. Cochran offers some valu
able property for sale. Read his adver
tisement and call on him,
A few wrestles among white boys
and little negroes have been the only
amusements in town this week.
Don’t fail to go to prayer-meeting
to-night at the M. FI. Church. The
pastor will be glad to see you there,
We are having delightful weather
and the fanners are busy making ar
rangements to gather their cotton crop.
Another marriage is to come off in
our ’burg before a very great while.
Particulars will all he given in due
time.
Mr. and Mrs. J. R Mercer, who were
recently married in our town, are stop
ping at the St. Nicholas hotel, New
York.
The notorious thief, Thomas Single
ton, col., has not yet been captured. It
is a pity that such a rogue should es
cape justice.
Mr. J. W. Roberts, Jr., sold his
farm last week to Prof. G. W. Chieves,
of Albany. Mr. Roberts will move to
town next week.
A man told us the other day that his
wife had made two barrels of fig pre
serves this year. He finally boiled
down to two gallons.
We respectfully decline to publish
the communication from “M. J. W.”
It is too lengthy. Write again,—be
brief, and give the news
Those who have land to sell would
do well to advertise it now. We un
derstand that a large number of people
are wanting to buy land in Terrell.
Uncle Ben Gibson moved his family
to town yesterday. He occupies the
bouse opposite his warehouse. We are
glad to welcome him back among us.
Some of our merchants have begun
to receive their fall goods. Watch the
columns of the Journal to know where
to find the best and cheapest articles.
Those in the adjoining counties to
this, who are looking for homes, should
come to Terrell. Lands are cheap and
the health and water remarkably good.
Go to Mrs. M. M. Anthony’s to get
fashionable millineary at low prices!
also to have your dresses made in the
latest styles at reasonable rates. Pa
per patterns obtained to order.
Mr. 0. B. Stevens sold the Edmon
son place last week to Mr. S. D. W il
son, of Dougherty county, at three dol
lars per acre. Mr. Wilson will move
to our county about the first of January
next.
Mr 11. J. Cook, of Albany, wants
the farmers of Terrell, Calhoun and
Lee counties to know that he is still
prepared to handle their cotton for
them. Read his advertisement in this
paper.
Parties desiring a good steam en
gine for ginning or other purposes
w ould do well to call on or address
A. J. Baldwin & Cos., Dawson, Ga.,
before buying. They are agents for
one ot the best Manufacturing Co.’s
in the U. S. Catalogues sent on ap
plication.
Accident.
Little Florence, daughter of Mr. L.
M. Leunard, happened to a painful ac
cident on last Friday evening. W hile
she and her little brothers and sisters
were playing on the piazza, Florence
fell upon the ground and bruxe her left
arm just above the wrist. We learn that
the little girl suffers great pain, but is
doing well.

Aug. 28. MELTON BROS. & THORNTON.
R. G. Jones, Dentist.
Notice the dental card of this gen
tleman. Dr. J ones has been a resident
of Dawson for the past eight years, and
is too well known to need any commen
dation from us. Eight years ago we
had him to do work for us, and it is as
good to-day as when done. Ills charg
es are iu accordance with the times.
Call on the Doctor.
Beef! Beef!
Messrs. W. G. Aven and J. S. Lee
have Termed a partnership and wall
do a general market business in our
town this foil. This is an enterprise
that has long felt the
need of. Mess. Aven & Lee are the
right men in the right place. We
hope our citizens will give them a
liberal patronage. Read their ad
vertisement.
Mocking Birds.
We have, for a long while, been a
warm friend to these birds, but have
about concluded to “go back on them.”
Many of our ettizens complain that they
are a great nuisance. They are troub
lesome to gardens and vineyards. We
heard a geutlemau say that, off of a
large grape arbor, he never gathered a
quart of grapes,—these birds are de
stroying them as fast as they ripen.
They are quite numerous this year.
Hundreds of them can be seen about
the city. We are no friend to them
now. Boys, shoot them if you want
The Sunday School Convention.
We have received a neat little pam
phlet containing the programme of the
Sunday School Convention of the Amcr
icus District Conference, to be held at
Americus, commencing September *23d,
and ending on the 2otb. Rev. R. M.
Lockwood, Sunday School Secretary,
is to conduct the exercises. We notice
from the programme that our young
•friend and townsman, James. G. Parks,
Esq., is to reply to the address of Wel
come. Our pastor, Rev. W. M. Hayes,
is to deliver an address on “The object
of Sunday School teaching,” and Prof.
Win. H. Allen, of our High School, is
appointed to address the meeting on
“The model Superintendent described.’’
Rev. L. A. Darsey, of the Terrell Cir
cuit, is to conduct devotional service at
104 o’clock on Thursday, 25th, the last
day.
Thus it will he seen that Dawson
will have a full share of the work to
do. We would like to publish the full
programme hut a want of space forbids
at present. We may do so in a future
issue. _____
Dental Notice.
Dr. Robertson will spare no pains in
giving those who favor him with their
work the advantages of all the late im
provements in dentistry. Old theories
and practice have exploded and anew
order of things have come up in their
place. We live in an age of progress
and it will be our fault if we come
short of its benefits. Perfect fits with
bad fitting plates guaranteed. Teeth
considered hopeless saved and made
useful. Abscessed teeth treated and
reclaimed. Dr. Robertson is no novice
in dentistry and enjoys at his home an
extensive practice with the finest rooms
and dental outfit in the South.
Aug. 28,1879. tt.
Wait for the “Boss Wagon.”
In a few days Mr. T. J. Hart will
have a car load of the celebrated
“Webster Wagons,” with the “Truss-
Rod’’ attachment. These wagons are
said to be tie best in use, aid are
sold veiy cheap. Farmers who need a
good wagon would do well to call on
>lr Hart before buying. They are
fuliy warranted. Read the advertise
ment in another column.
Melton Bros. & Thornton.
These enterprising gentlemen are ex
pecting an immense fall trade, and are
preparing for it. They have nearly
completed the largest store house in
Dawson and will soon be into it with
the biggest stock of goods ever
brought to this place. Their present
house is crowded and more goods com
ing. They are determined to let the
people know that goods can be sold as
cheap here as anywhere in Southwest
Georgia, and not only that, but they
pledge themselves to see that their cus
tomers get as much for their cotton as
they could get in any of the neighbor
ing markets. If euergy, industry, en
terprise, plenty of goods, good goods
and low prices are worth anything, we
expect to see this new firm build up a
trade equal to any retail house in South
Georgia. The Melton Brothers already
have a fine trade and reputation and
Mr. Thornton is a strong addition to
the learn. Read their advetiseiuent
carefully and look out for a stunning
display of goods.
Why Is It ?
We have frequently heard the ques
tion asked why it is that so many of our
formers are offering their land for sale.
We have made enquiry and learn that
it is because of the unsatisfactory con
dition of the labor system. Another
reason is that many of the planters in
this county have more land than their
own force can cultivate and they want
to sell their surplus. They claim that
small farms can be more successfully
and profitaoly managed than large ones.
A majority of our planters can sell half of
their land and then have enough for their
own use. The lands jn Terrell are, we
suppose, as productive as any in South
west Georgia.
A Great Demand for Terrell
County Lands.
It is quite apparent that there is a
great demand for land and homes in
Terrell county. The liealtlifulness of
our county and the fertility of our
soil are attracting attention from less
favored localities. Every advertise
ment of “Land tor Sale” brings nu
merous inquiries, and nearly every'
one who comes and looks buys. In
Teriell county there are good lands
enough to support ten times her pres
ent population. Many have more
land than they have use for and de
sire to sell a part; others like trade
and change.
Now, if you have land for sale, in
Terrell county, on favorable terms, I
will advertise it for you for a reason
able time, assist in finding a purchas
er and selling it, examine title, make
deeds etc., etc., and charge you such
compensation, only in case of sale,
as may be agreed upon.

Dawson, Ga., Aug. 27th, 1879.
Mr. J. B. C. Palmer, a prominent
druggist of Marlin, Texas, arrived on
the six o'clock train last evening. He
was at once conveyed in a carriage to
the residence of Mr. B. F. Collins on
South Third street, and there married
to Miss Annie H. White, a step daugli
ter of Mr. Collins. The ceremony was
performed by Rev. S. A. King, of the
Second Presbyterian church. The par
ties, we learn, had never mec but once
before and that only a few weeks since,
but were then mutually so well pleased
that the event above noted followed as
a natural consequence. Miss White
came to this city from another State a
few months since. She is quite an ac
complished young lady. The bridal
pair left for their Marlin home on the
evening train just two hours after his
a-rival here.— Waco ( Texas) Examiner ,

The Testimony
OF THE WHOLE WORLD,
Holloway’s Ointment.
Bid Leg’, Bad Breasts, Sores and Ulcers.
All description of sores are remedial by
the proper and dilligent use of this inesti
mable preparation. To attempt to cure bad
legs by plastering the edgos of the wound
together is folly; for should the skin unite,
a boggy diseased condition remains under
neath to break out with tenfold fury io a few
days. The only rational and succesatui
treatment, ay indicated by Dature, is to re
duce the inflammation io and about the
wound and to soothe the neighboiitig paita
by rubbing in plenty of the Ointment, as
salt is forced into meat. This will cause the
malignant humors to be drained off from tDe
hard, swollen, aud disrolored parts round
about the wound, sore or ulcer, and when
there humors are removed, the wounds
themselves will seon heel: warm bread and
water poultices applied over the aftectcd
parts, after tile Ointment has beeu well rub*
bed in, will soothe and soften the samp and
gently assist the cure. There is a descrip
tion of ulcer, sore and swelling, which Deed
not be named here, attendant upon the foil
lies of yditb, and for which this Ointment
is uigently recommended as a soveieign
remedy. In curing such poisonous sores it
never fails to restore the system to a healthy
state if the Pills be taken according to the
pru ted instructions.
Diphtheria, Ulcerated Sore Throat,
Scarlet and other Fevers.
Any of the above diseases may be aured
by well rubbing the Oiutnr.ent three times a
day into rtre chest, throat, and neck of the
patient; it will soou penetrate and give im
mediate relief. Medicine taken by the
mouth must operate upon the whole system
ere its influence can be felt in any local pert,
whereas the Ointment will do its woik at
once. Whoever tties the unguent in the
above manner for the diseases named, or
any similar disoiders affecting the ch st and
throat, will find themselves relieved s>s by a
charm. All sufferers from these complaints
should envelop the toruat at bedtime in a
large bread and water poultice, af'er the
Ointment has been wall rubbed ii; it will
greatly assist the cure of the throat and
chest. To allay the fever and letsen the
nfl iiomation, eight or ten Pills phould be
taken night and morning. The Ointment
will ; roduee perspiration, the grand e.-sen
ial in all c tees of levers, sore throats, or
where there might ho an oppression of the
chest, either from asthma or other causes.
Piles, Fistulas, Strictures.
The above class of complaints will be re
moved by nightly fomenting toe parts with
varm water, and then by most i ffectinlly
-ulibing in the Ointment. Persons suffering
from these direful complaints chould lose
.1 jl a moment in arresting their progress It
houla be understood that it is not sufficii nt
merely to smear the Ointment on the sffecl
••d parts, but it must he well ruhh.-d in for a
considerable time two or three limes a day,
hat it may be tuken in'a the system, whence
t will remove any I idde sore or >vouu‘J as
. ffectaally as thou h pal able to the eye.

Blotches, as also swelling", can, with ceis
tainty, be radically cured if the Ointment be
used freely, and the Pills be taken night
•nd morning, ns recommended in the pric
ed instructions. When treated in any other
way they only dev up in one plac ■ to break
out iu an other; whereas this Oiutmo t will
emovo the humor from the system, and
leave the patient a v : gorous and healthy be
ng. It will require time with the use of the
Pills to insure a lasting cure.
Dropsical Swellings, Paralysis, and
Stitf Joints.
Although the above complaints dffer
wid ly in their orig'n and nature, yet they
ill require local treatment. Many of the
worst cases of such diseases will yield in a
■orparatively slroit space of time wiien this
Ointment is diligently rubbed into the parts
fleered, even after evt ry other means have
ailed. In all setiaus maladies the Pills
-hould be taken according to the printed

Both the Ointment and Pills should be
