A Hoy's Vacation Letter.
A small boy was sent to the country
(o board a short time ago. He prom
ised his mother that he would write a
girnd long letter, describing his trip and
boarding ] lace, etc. A week went by,
and his poor mother was nearly distract
ed when she got the following interest
ing letter from him: “I am here, and
I swapped my watch for a pup, and he
is the boss pup; and I went in swimmin
fourteen times yesterday', and a feller
stole my pocketbook, and I want some
money; and I shall bring the pup home.”

‘Why?’queried the listening one.
•Because,* shrieked Mr. Middlerib,
‘you're de bard of Erim!’
‘Eh? asked the a-tonished cousin.
‘YVba-at?’ questioned Mrs Middie
rib, with a prolonged rising inflection
on tho extreme right of the remark.
‘Why, Pa!’ said Miss Middltrib re
preae! fully.
And the old gentleman wrnt out id

his buggy and drove down to the office
grumbling all the way about stupid

A Brutal Case.
If ever a case existed that warranted
an outbreak of popular indignation tt
is that of the Brooklyn undertaker
w ho, duiing the funeral of a dead fa

fiom its coffin because of tho non-pay

Telephone in a Mine.
At Leadville, Col. Edison’s te'e
phoue was placed in operation Thurs
day in tho carbonate mine. The mine
will henceforth be woiked by order
per telephone, much lime thus being
saved. Th ; s is tho first experiment
of the kind ever made. It is propos
ed to introduce Edison’s electric light
in the mines at Leadville. it would
be a considerable saving of money it
is thought.
There was a man whose friends
tried to cure him ot drinking by' tak
ing him one night when be was in a
stupor and putting him in a coffin and
lay ing him away in the graveyard.
One of his companions lay by him to
frighten him when he should awake,
at last he raised himself and, look
ing cautiously around, he muttered:
‘I wonder where I am.’
‘You are in hell,’ came from a gruff
voice behind him,
liow long have I been here?’
‘Ten days.’
‘liow long have yon been here?’
‘Twenty years.’
‘Well, then, you have been here
long enough to get the run of the
place. Can you tell me where I can
get a good drink of whiskey?’
Oliver Bodfish of Syracuse, aged 84,
decided to marry for the third time but
he went about it deliberately. Remem
bering that a certain girl in his old
.Massachusetts home was very pretty
fifty years ago and being informed that
she had lately become a widow, he
made her a matrimonial proposal by
mail, a condition being that she should
still seem comely in his sight. lie of
fered to pay her fare to Syracuse and if
he did not like her looks to send her
back again. She made the journey, he
was pleased with her, and they were
married.
A Rochester man has a wonderful
memory of musical sounds. His spe
cialty is railroad locomotive bells. The
- rand of a locomotive bell once beard
he distinctly remembers for any length
of time, and as each locomotive has a
number, he can tell that number when
be hears the bell ring. There are
more than five hundred locomotives
running on the New York Central Rail
road, and of these he has been able to
give the number accurately by the
sound of their 1 ells.
It makes a good, old fashioned,
straight-laced, ring-bound Democrat as
mad as thunder to see Bullock and
Kim'all sit back on their dignity and
wag their ponderous auricles at the
B‘ate House feliows, with a sly, devil
i-’i and altogether wicked wink. It
stirs up a monster in us, too, as big as
the whale that swallowed Jonah.—

A young lady of Hampton was asked
by her sweetheart the other day if she
had ever read Romeo and Juliet. She
replied she had read Romeo, but did
not think she bad as yet ever read
Juliet. The Hampton Weekly tells
the story. It is needless to say that
the young man swooned away.
An unfortunate difficulty is troubling
the Primitive Baptist Church at Enon
near Jones’ Mills, Meriwether county.
The (rouble arose out of the question
whether or not the members can belong
to the Mason or Odd Fellows fraternity.
One faction of the church objects to
this, but another has decided that a
man can be a Mason or Odd Fellow
and yet remain a church member. On
account of this dflerence of opinion, the
Meriwether Vindicator says the church
is likely to be torn asunder.
A desperate street encounter occur
red at Benton, Ala., on the 11th, be
tween two men named Dudley and Owen.
Dudley’s sister, it is said, had advised
against the introduction of a cousin to
Owen, who called Dudley to account
about it. Dudley refused to make any
explanation, when Owen drew a pistol
and snapped it at Dudley, who in turn
shot Owen four times, cut his throat
and stamped on his head until he was
dead.
A Yankee, who had just lost his
wife, was found by a neighbor empty
ing a bowl of soup as large as a hand
basin, “Why, my goodness, Elna

care for your wife?” “Wal,” said the
Yankee, ‘Tve been cryin’all the morn

I’ll cry another spell. That’s fair any

Charles Summer was no musician.
A lady friend once told him that if he
was to buy a music Lox set to “Old

HOW WATCIiES AltE MADE.
It will be apparent to any one, who
will ex mine a Solid Gold Watch,
that aside from the necessary thickness
for engraving and polishing, a large
proportion of the precious metal used,
is needed only to stiffen and hold the
engraved portions in place, and sup
ply the necessary solidity and strength.
The suip'us gold is actually needless
so far as utility and heauty are con
cerned. In JAMEB BOSS’ PAT
EN! GOLD WATCH CASES, this
waste ot precious metal is overcome,
and the Same solidity and strknoth
produced at from one-third to one-half
of the usual cost of solid cases. This
process >8 of the most simple nature,
as follows: a plate of nickle composi
tion metal, specially adapted to the
purpose, has two plates of solid gjld
soldered one oc each side. The three
are then passed between polished
steel rollers, and the result is a strip
of heaviy plated composition, from
which the cases, hacks, centres, bez
els, &c. t are cut and shaped by suita
ble dies and formers The gold in
these cases is suffic "'sutly thick to ad
mit of all kinds ot aliasing, engraving
and enamelling; the engraved cases
have been carried until worn perfect
ly smooth by time and use without re
moving the gold. They are for saie
by all jewelers, and each case is war
ranted ly Special Certificate. If
your jeweler does not keep them, send
to Hagstoz & Thorpe, Sixth and

HOLLOWAY'S PILLS.
Nervous Disorders.
What is more feaiful than a breaking down
of the r rvous system? To be excitable or
nervous in a small degree is most distressing
for where can n remedy be found? This is
one: drink but little wine, beer, or spirits,
or far better, none; take no coffee, weak
tea being preferable; get all the fresh air
you can; take three or four Pills every
nigh'; eat plenty of solids, avoiding the u e
of slops; and if tbeio golden rules are fo'-
lowed, you will be happy in mind and strong
in body, and forget you have any nerves.
Mothers and Daughters.
If there is one thing more than another
for which these Pills are so famous, it is their j
purifying properties, especially their power j
of clensing the blood from all impurities;
and removing dangerous and suspended
secretions. Universally adopted as the one
grand remedy for female complaints, they
never fail, never weaken the Bvstem, and
always bring about wbat is required.
Sick Headaches and Want of Appetite
These feelings which so sadden ns, most
; frequently aii.-e from annoynces or trouble,
from obstructed perspiration, 01 from eating
and drinking what is unfit for ns, thus disor
dering the liver and stomaeb. These organs
roust be regulated if you wish to be well.
The Pills, if taken according to the printed
instructions, will quickly restore a healthy
action to both liver and stomach, whence
follow, as a natural consequence, a good ap
petite and a clear head. In the East and
West Indies scarcely any other medicine is
ever used for these disorders.
How to be Strong.
Never let the bowels be either confined or
unduly acted upon. It may appear singu
lar that Holloway's Pills should be recom
mended for a run upon the bowels, many
persons supposing that they would increase
relaxation. This is a great mistake, bowev
ei; for these Pills will immediately correct
the liver and stop every kind of bowel com
plaint. In warm climates thousands of lives
have been saved by the use ol this medicine
which, in all cases, gives tone and vigor to
the whole organic system, however derang
ed; health and strength following as a mat
ter of course. The appetite, too, is won
derfully increased by the use of these Pills,
combined in the use of solid in preference
to fluid diet. Animat food is better than
broths and stews. By removing acrid, fer
mented, or other impure homors from the
liver, stomach, or blood, the cause of dysen
terv, diarrl oji, and other bowell complaints
is expelled. The result is, that the diatur
bance is arrested, and the action of the
bowels becomes regular. Nothing will stop
the relaxation of the bowels so quickly as
this fine correcting medicine.
Disorders of the Kidneys.
In all diseases affecting these organs,
whether they secrete too much or too little
water: or whether they be afflicted with
stone or gravel, or with aches or pains set
tleo in the loins over the regions of the kid
neys, these Pills should be taken accoiding
to the printed directions, and the Ointment
should be well rubbed into the small of the
back at bedtime. This treatment will give
almost immediate reli t when all means
have failed.
For Stomachs out of Order,
No medicine will so effectually imptove
the tone of the stomach as these Pills; they
remove all acidity, occasioned either by-in
temperance or improper diet. They reach
the liver and reduce it to a healthy action;
they are wonderfully efficacious in case ol
spasms, in fact tbev nevei fail in curing all
disorders of the liver and stomach.
Holloway’s Pills are the best remedy known
in the world tor the fallowing diseases.
