Death ot Bennie Spearman.
The sadest event which it has Deen
our duty to chronicle in many months,
is the death of Bennie Spearman, which
occurred at the home of his Grand
father, Mr. M. 11. Baldwin’s, In this
city, on yesterday morning, of Typho-
Malarial Fever. Bennie was a young
man, nineteen years old, of good prom
ise and beloved by all who knew him.
lie was sick only about one week. His
mother, Mrs. R. T. Harper, who lived
at Hampton, Ga., was telegraphed for
and arrived on the evening before his
death. Our whole community is sad
dened by the loss of this most estimable
young gentleman.
A Great Demand for Terrell
County Lands.
It is quite apparent that there is a
great dematid for land and homes in
Terrell county. The healthfulness of
our county and the fertility of our
soil are attracting attention from less
favored localities. Every advertise
ment of “Land for Sale” brings nu
merous inquiries, and nearly every
one who comes and looks buys. In
Terrell county there are good lands
enough to support ten times her pres
ent population. Many have more
land than they have use for and de
sire to sell a part; others like trade
and change.
Now, if you have land for sale, in
Terrell county, on favorable terms, I
will advertise it for you for a reason
able time, assist in finding a purchas
er and selling it, examine title, make
deeds etc., etc., and charge you such
compensation, only in case of sale,
as may be agreed upon.

Investigating the Treasurer.
How the Committee Kept a Secret—
Points in Mr, Renfroe’s Favor—
Waiting for a Politically Dead
Man’s Shoes—A Capital Sugges
tion —The Goldsmith Trial—Con
gressional Timber—Length of the
Legislative Session—Gossip.
Cor. Chronicle and Constitutionalist.
Atlanta, September, 13. —The spe
cial committee appointed to investigate
the State Treasurer kept an ominous
silence during all its works. Time and
again members of that committee were
cornered by reporters, who applied their
longest, sharpest augers to no effect.
A significant smile, an eloquent nod, or
a crushing refusal to communicate met
every anxious enquirer. I said to one
of the most active investigators last
Monday: “Mr. llenfroe seems to he in
dignant at" the mere suggestion that he
may possibly he recommended as a fit
subject for impeachment.'’ He looked
at me fully a minute and was about to
say something very important, when 1
saw the light of its promise die out -of
his eyes and murmuring “Ah!” he
passed out of uiy reach.
When the committee’s report recom-
mending the impeachment of .Mr. Ren
froe was read Thursday morning,
o’clock, it created some surprise. The
full record of the testimony, on which
the report was so closely based, had
been on the desks of members two days,
hut it must he said that notLalf of them
had read it, while some had not so
much as turned trie first page. Conse
quently, many of the honorable gentle
men were surprised when they heard
the strong language of the report. Mr.
lvcnfroe sat in the hall during its read
ing, and seemed to take it very easily
The minority report of Mr. Rcdwinc,
of Hall, was based too much on matters
outside the investigation to be very ef
fective. It dwelt principally on the ex
cellent official acts which Mr. llenfroe
has done for the State, and not enough
on those delinquencies with which he is
charged. It is due to him to say that
he has in all this investigation shown a
candor and an openness which will go
in his favor if the impeachment program
me is carried out, as it surely will be.
Most of the sins charged against him
are those which many aTreasurerer has
done before, but. they are very strohgly
prohibited under the new Constitution
and present laws, and a precedent can
never excuse an illegal’ action. There
was some lively sparring over the mo
tion to postpone action on the reports
until next Tuesday, but the House fin
ally determined to wait until that time,
and wisely, I think; for by that time the
matter can receive a calmer considera
tion and a more judicious direction than
could be now given to it. There is
some opposition to the policy of im
peachment as being expensive, hut
there seems to be no other way out of
the difficulty. It is thought that the
trial of Renfroe could he completed in
a week at the outside. To show how
speculative men are, I may state that
already there have been guesses and
suggestions as to who the successor of
Mr. Renfroe will be in the event lie is
ejected. Some of the fr ends of Mr.
Louis Garrand, the efficient Represen
tative of Muscogee, have named him
for this position of trust and honor. 1
do not think he wants it, or would leave
the legal profession to accept it. If in
any event, however, it should come to
pass that lie was placed in charge of the
Treasury, 1 risk nothing in saying that
he would make an efficient and faithful
officer always. He has one of the clear
est heads m the Legislature, and on fi
nancial matters his opinions have espe
cial consideration in that body.
THE GOLDSMITH TRIAL
Is dragging along with the hope that
argument of counsel may be had early
next week. Some of the evidence lias
been spicy, but most of it consists of
those dry details which interest nobody
except those fully into the spirit of the
case. The galleries are full all the
while, however. People sit there by
the hour, held by the novelty of the
proceedings as well as by motives of
real interest in the result. The most
enjoyable event ’in the trial was the
speech of Hon. W. M. Hammond, of
Thomas, last Monday, in opening the
case on the part of the managers. Ilis
efforts on the floor of the House have
always been smooth and successful, but
in this speech he presented rare powers
of logic and analysis, while his diction
fairlv bloomed with the healthy beauties
of rhetoric. It was really an admira
ble effort, and has been talked of lieie
a great deal. It is said that the people
down in the Second District when the
time comes for a now Congressman
will find it difficult to choose between
Mr. Hammond and Mr. Turner, of
Brooks, the acknowledged leader of
the House. They are entirely differ
ent in their styles; each presents su
perioritiesof which the other isdevoid,
but both are st ong men and either

\Ve will have the pleasant society of
the Legislature ib very unce: tain. If
two oi three more impeachment trials
ore te come off, the middle of October
will find them enjoying our rich In
dian Summer. They b >po to get awuy
by the first, hut that i. not possible,
provided they clear the calendais.
We h ave gone so far now .hat. we
might as well tnftko this session mem
orable. It may turnout to be the
“Long Parliament’’ of Georgia. The
abuse of tire Legislature about its in
activity is unjust. It is doing a gre at
deal for the Honor and safety of the
State. Suppose it had rushed through
all its business Inst Winter, aud there
had been no continuation of tho ses
sion this Kumraei? There is no tell
ing when tho alarming frauds about
the capital would have been discover
ed and cut off. This Summer session
has been a blessing to Georgia, and
it takes until Christmas to dispose of
its labors, let the Legislature go on
uniil that time. They may be sub
jecied to the wrath ot a few country
editors, but the people will be satisfi
ed and will commend their action.
0 ENKRALLY,
Gossip is brisker than over around
the capital.

and South Carolina merchants here

I.IOW WATCHES ARE MADE.
It will bo apparent to any die, who
will ex mine a Solid Gold Watch,
that aside from the necessary thickness
for engraving and polishing, a largo
proportion of the precious metal used,
is needed only to stiffen and hold the
engraved portions in place, and sup
ply thenecessaiy solidity and strength.
Thesuiplus gold is actually needless
so far as utility and beau'y are con
cerned. In JAMEB BOSS’ PAT
ENT GOLD WATCH CASES, this
waste of precious metal is overcome,
and the Same solidity and strength
produced at from one-third to one-half
of the usual cost of’solid cases. This
process is of the most simple nature,
as follows: a plate of nicklo composi
tion metal, specially adapted to the
purpose, has two plates of solid u ii.n
soldered oue on each side. The three
are then passed between polished
steel rolleis, and the result is a strip
of heavily plated composition, from
which the cases, backs, centres, bez
els, &c., are cut and shaped by suita
ble dies and formers The /gold in
these cases is sufiic Siitly thick to ad
mit of all kinds of chasing, engraving
and enamelling; the engraved cases
have been earned until worn perfect
ly smooth by time ami use without le

rented by Special Certificate. If
