SMALL-SHOT.
St Valentines day comes next.
It rained Dusiness out of Dawson on
last Monday morning.
Stove Pipe at 25 cents per joint, at
J. W. Bragan A Son’s.
A calf turned fool and died on the
atreeta Sunday.
Leap year has come, and still we
don’t hear of many marriages.
Old Stoves, Guns and Pistols re
paired at 4. W. Bragan A Son’s.
The council had two “fighting cases”
before it last Monday. Both negroes.
From now till the first of April is
the time to give your old cow good at
tention.
Ask your merchant for clothing man
ufactured by Edwin Bates A Cos., N. Y.
We understand that many of our
farmers arc making their own fertiliz
ers this year.
Give us your orders for job printing.
We guarantee satisfaction in every
particular.
Mules, bacon, corn, guano, etc , etc.,
all “on time.” Remember, fanners, it
must be paid for next fall.
A fancy lot of Tooth Powders, Toil-
Vet Sets and Celluloid Combs at J. R.
Janes A Son’s.
An ounce of“keep-your-mouth-shut”
3s better than a pound of explanation
■after you have said it.
It is easy to pick holes in other peo
ple’s work, but it is far more profitable
to do better work yourself.
Tin-ware, Crockery, Glass-ware and
Tamp Goods, cheap, at J. W. Bragan
& Son’s.
A good fine-toothed comb will beat
any phenologist ip the world at devel
oping what is in a'boy’s liead.
The small grain crop is said to be
unusually promising- We understand
that a larger area than usual was plan
ted.
There is, perhaps, more guano in
Dawson at present than was ever here
. before, at one time. And the farmers
-are buying it, toe.
A fresh supply of Lambeth’s war
ranted gaiden seeds. Also a very choice
let of .flower seed, just received at
• Janes & Son’s.
It is the merchant who advertises
most that sells the most goods and mak
es tbo most money, If you don’t be
lieve it try it oDce and see if it don’t
work like a charm.
JL exchange say*: “No
fashionably dressed .gentleman will
■weai anything ibis winter hut an mister
and a wealskiw icap.” Then here’* one
who doesn't want to he a fashionably
dressed gentleman.
’Hhe demand Jor .shingles has been so
:grca>t of late that the price has advan
ced considerably. One man who has
been selling a great onany shingles in
Dawson, says the demand is so heavy
that he’s going to quit getting them.
.How’s that for business 1
<•
We. Fear-that the small orop of corn
made in this section last year will sadly
•embanrass some of *our farmers next
fall. It is-an unprofitable business to
pay high prices for provisions to raise
cotton at low prices. We hope those
.who are buying on time will be able to
-make “both ends meet,” but we doubt
iftfiiey do it.
-Craropton’s Imperial Soap, sold by
.J. B. Crinv, is the very best laundry
soap in the market. We have used it
•three years and know it is the best. If
you want your clothes thoroughly
.cleansed, all greaoe removed, etc., use
•this soap.
More New Goods.
A fresh arrival of Fall and Winter
liats and bonuets ot latest styles; also
a large lot of notions and dress-furnish
ing3 at Mrs. M. M. Anthony’s.

On Wednesday evening, the 2lst

city, by Rev. J. A. Ivey, Mr. E. J .
Proctor and Miss Cliffton S. Walls,
grand-daughter of Mr L. M. Roberts.
At the residence of Mr. James Mor
row, Orange Hill, Fla., by J. H. Harp,
Esq., Mr. E. M. Weston, formerly of
Dawson, and Miss Mary G. Boothe, of
Fla., on the 18th instant.
Mr. Weston is a brother of the local

Personal.
Col. R. R. Blocker called on us yes
terday afternoon with one eye and part
of his handsome countenance badly
bunged up. He was on his way home
from Burke Superior Court, and, when
he arrived at this place he stepped off

ot put off ajear load of mules, and
Mr. B. thought it would stop at the de
pot on its way back, but as it did not,
he tried to get on while it was running j
—result a fall and the damage above
named.
Gin House Burned.
The gin house and press of Mr. Jas.
Durham, situated about 15 miles south
of Dawson and near the turnpike, was
burned one day last week. It was a
steam gin, and the roof of the building
cought from a spark from the engine.
Mr. Durham had fortunately applied to
Jas. G. Parks, Esq., for an insurance
policy last October, and thus his loss
does not fall very heavily on him. W e
learn that his policy only lacked three
days of being out at the time of the
burn. The Insurance company have
very promptly adjusted his loss awl
will pay him $Bl3.
Guano Declined !
I am now offering for sale, at Hood
& Lassater’s warehouse, the Highest
Standard and universally popular brands
of ’Gnanos, as low as 450 lbs cotton. —
It is useless to speak of the superiority
of them. Farmers will do well to call
and sec me before buying. No freight
io pay fey planter.

The Demlno.
On lasft Tuesday evening the your-.g
people of Dawson and vicinity enjoyed
(themselves at a Domino Social at the
residence of Judge 4- B. Crim. The
spacious reception room and wide halls
of the Judge’s elegant residence were
thronged from an early until a late hour
at night by gay and festive masquera
ders. All seemed to enjoy the fun, and
left thanking tho Judge and his hospi
table family for their kind entertain
ment. Music was a prominent feature
of the evening’s entertainment, and, in
this line Mr. Donald Graham, a canny
Scotchman, with his bagpipes, created
quite a sensation, and added much to
the interest of the oocasion. The
Judge’s daughter, Miss Ada, has just
returned from a long visit to Florida,
and this party was given to welcome
her home.
Encouraging Prospects.
Dawson seems to be undergoing a
grand change. New fences., new roofs,
new dwellings, and repairing general
ly are to be seen on every street. Let
the good work continue. Already some
dozen or more good, substantial fami
lies have moved in among us, and as
many more are expected next fall. The
county is also rapidly filling up with
experienced farmers, who seem to take
an interest in our town and will doubt
less do much to build it up. Why
should people not locate here 1 Terrell
has superior advantages over a majority
of the counties in the state, and the
surrounding country is finding it out.
Within twelve months lands have ad
vanced nearly or quite fifty per cent.,
and we would advise those who contem
plate settling in our county to select
ther homes while lands are yet compar
atively cheap. Terrell does not owe
a cent and has a surplus in the treasury.
If the farmers do not buy too heavily
on time this year, we confidently ex
pect a good and prosperous future for
all our people.
Csesar covered his bald head and
gray hair with a laurel crown. Ayer’s
Hair Vigor covers gray heads with
the still more welcome locks ot youth.
Poor and Proud.
Young men out of business are some
times hampered by pride. Many young
men who go West take more pride than
money—and bring back all the pride
and no money at all. A young man
that‘works for his bread,’ no matter
what honest work he does, has no rea
son for shame. A young man who eats
the bread of idleness, no matter how
much money he has is disgraced. All
young men starting iu life ought to aim,
first of all, to find a place where they
can earn their bread and butter with
hoe, ax, spade, wheelbarrow, currry
comb, blacking-brush; no matter how.
Independence first. The bread-and
butter queition settled, let the young
inan perform his duty so faithfully as
to attract attention, and let him con
stantly keep his eyes open for a chance
to do better. Aoout half the poor,
proud young men, and two-thirds of the
poor, discouraged young men, are al
wavs out of work. The young man who
pockets his pride, and carries an upper
lip as stiff as a sheet-irou door-stfep
scraper, need not starve, and stands a
good chance to become rich.
How is it that there is such a crop
of self-conceited young men now-a
days? Men, who, with nothing, men
tally or physically, to recommend them
to the notice of any refined, intelligent,
delicate woman, bluster and talk big
about the “ladies being in love with
them;” taking the most common-placed
civilities as marks of affectionate atten
tion, and ask advice “as to which of the
dear creatures one had better marry.”
Marriage with such a fool! Better for
a woman to be buried fathoms deep in
the 3ea. Girls, let us give you a bit
of wholesome advice: Always distrusts
that man who boasts of a favor receiv
ed at the hands ef one of your own sex.
You may know him at once for a puppy,
no matter how fine a coat he may wear.
Let him alone.
