A man who lives comfortably at home,

Involuntary Manslaughter.
We are informed that on last Thurs
day morning a difficulty occurred on the
Beal place, in this county, between two
negro tenants, YoUng Johnson and Em
mett Randall, which resulted in the
death of the former. A warrant for
murder was obtained for Emmett who
was forthwith arrested under the charge
and brought before Justices L. M
Lennard and J. M. Simmons for a pre
liminary investigation. After all the
evidence had been adneed and the ar
gument of counsel, it was the judgment
of the Court that the derendant be
bound over in tli3 sum of $250 to the
May term of Terrell Superior Court,
to answer the offense of involunutary
manslaughter. Mr. Samuel Magby
went the bond.
Attempt to Shoot our Haililf.
It seems that on Monday evening
last, about dark, T. R. Whitaker, the
bailiff for this district, went out just
oeyond town to levy an attachment
upon some of the property of Thos. 11.
Nixon, who was preparing to move from
our midst. After meeting and inform
ing Mr. Nixon of the nature of his
O
visit, our bailiff was heartily
by the report of a pistol in the hands
of Mr. N., and told to “git” or death
would follow. From reports our friend,
the Bailiff, obeyed the command, and
on reaching town procured a warrant
for the arrest of Mr. N., charging him
with assault with intent to murder—
Mr. N. was arrested on Tuesday and
brought before Justices Lennard and
Simmons for a preliminary trial. The
investigation resulted in binding the
defendant over in the sum of $l5O to
the May term our Superior Court to
answer the offense of obstructing a le
gal process. Defendant gave bond.
We notice that many of our boys
are again using the “Alabama sling”
with which to shoot pigs, cows, dogs,
etc. If we mistake not there is an or
dinance against them, which ought to
be inforced. These things are too dan
gerous for boys to handle.

Cuthbert, Ga., Feb. 11,1880.
Messrs. Editors :
The thriving and enterprising little
city of Cuthbert is all aglow with life
and activity this week, occasioned by
the semi-annual meeting of the State
Agricultural Society which convened
here on yesterday, and yrill continue to
day and to-morrow. The good people
of this hospitable city are determined
to furnish a royal and liberal entertain
ment to their guests, the delegates to
the convention; and, as evidence of
how well they are succeeding in this
direction, each delegate asserts that he
has the best place. The Terrell dele
gation is assigned to our friend, R. J.
Anthony and Col J T Flewellen.
The opening address by President
Hardeman, on yesterday, was just such
a speech as only he has the happy facul
ty of conceiving and delivering, and
was one of his very best efforts. The
address of welcome was made by Col
A Hood, jr, in behalf of the oitixens of
Cuthbert, and was replete with chaste
and beautiful thoughts, and abounded
in eloquent utterances. It was respond
ed to by Dr D E Butler, of Madison,
in a most felicitous and appropriate
manner. The sessions of the conven
tion thus far have been harmonious,
pleasant and profitable. The experi
ence meeting last night was quite an en
joyable affair, and a source of much
profitable and practicable information-
Prof McNulty, of Cuthbert, and Mr
Carmichael, ofCowetacounty, were uni
versally recognized as the chief sources
of the evening’s pleasure, and they were
greeted with rounds of applause when
ever they arose to speak.
The fire department of Cuthbert had
a grand parade yesterday afternoon for
the entertainment of the delegates, and
actually bought a house to burn up, but
the Chemical engine, (similar to ours in
Dawson,) very quickly extinguished the
flames, although the building was satu
rated with kerosene and turjientine. The
Albany Brass Band is furnishing the
music for the occasion, and a most ex
cellent set of musicians compose it

Messrs. Editors :
As the newspapers are all booming
ft' jund, let us boom some too. In this
county lives Mr. Nathan Cook, who is
102 years old; has raised 10 children,
the youngest of whom is over 40 years
of age. lie has lived in the same yard
that now encloses him ever since the
Indian war. Notwithstanding a severe
spell of sickness last suiipner he now,
as he always has, earns his daily bread.
He is aright saucy old widower and not
long ago said that he would marry
again if he could find a woman to suit
him. A Boomer.

Guitars, Banjos amt Violins.
Among the instruments suited to
young people the guitar at a small
price is one of the sweetest toned and
most available, especially for young
ladies, and it is certainly well adapt
ed to'the home and should be used
more than it is. For the boys the
violin and banjo are the lavoriles,
and very justly so too. Especially is
this true of the violin, which is neat
er the human voice than any other ins
trument, exoept the organ perhaps.
It is also more available and lias a
wider range of usefulness than
other. At home or abroad, on land
or op sea, in the- hall or home it is
ever ready and full of the sweetest
and most defightlnl strains oi melody..
It has been condemned for its evil as
sociations, but that is unjust, it needs
to be put upon a higher plan and its -
usefulness increased. You can bay
any of these instrumnts or anything
musical at low prices, at

Dr. C. J. Moffeit— Dear Sir —l
cannot too strongly recommend your
Teethina (Teething Powders) to moth
ers as one of the best medicines they
can obtain for their debilitated and sick
ly infants. I have used it with very
satisfactory results the past summer
with my own child, and while we have
heretofore lost a child or two from
teething under other remedies, our
present child that has taken teethina is
a fine healthy boy. Its meritit certain
to make it a standard family medicine
for this country for the irratations of
teething and bowell disorders of chil
dren of all ages.
