The Simmons Case.
From tlio latest news on the subject,
we infer that, the ISnv. Mr. >iuiiiioiis,
whose name has been sent to the Senate
ar census snperviwr for a north Geor
gia district, and about whos. confirma
tion some of the Georgia delegates in
Congress have been fighting, will be
rejected by that body, some of the re
publican Senators even refusing to vote
for him.
Cen. Gordon has opposed the confir
mation of Simmons, on the ground of
incompetence , and because, in his
of application to Mr. Hayes he spoke
of Georgia democrats as “secession
traitors.” Dr. Felton, Mr. Stephens
and Senator Hill have been < hamphm
iug the cause of the ’-e-virend inccnnpi
ten calumniator, and some warm words
have passed on the subject, especially
between Gordon and Stephens. We
notice that some of the so railed inde
pendent papers of the state, and others
incliuc-d in that direction, are abusing
{the word expresses our idea better than
any other we now have in mind) Gen.
Gordon for his opposition to Simmons
and the wishes of Hill, Stephens and
Felton. In our opinion, if these gen
tlemen Or these papers wish to fight
Gen. Gordon, before the eyes of the
people of the South, they would bo wise
to select a more yuln rnbfe point for
their attack than that presented in this
controversy. Gon. Gordon, doubtless,
has his faults as all me. have, but there
never has been anywhere, or under any
circumstance, a dark hour of peril to
the South but that he ha been found
full-breasted at the front fighting man
fully in her cause. On the battlefield,
amid the crash, of cannon ball.;, the
whistling of bullets and the flow of
blood ;—in the Senate chamber where
giants clutch in deadly intellectual en
counter, —on the stump before the ex
cited and enraged populace —every-
where, and under all circumstances,
where the South has been assailed, Gen.
Gordon has been found erect, face to
face, point to point and frout to front
with her enemies, battling heroically
for her rights, her honor and her man
hood. On eagle pinions tins match
less hem soars towards the suit of truth
and right and honor; ho does not flut
ter in the glare of power on waxen
wings that droop and melt in its heal.
On these points Gen. Gordon is invul
nerable, and he who assails him here,
be hie ability what it may, must, inevi
tably fall back repulsed, diseonfited and
disgraced. Such a man as Gordon can
not vote to place in office over his peo
ple one who calls them “secession trait
ors.” Is he not right?
The Iteeent Agricultural Meet
t"VC.
From what we can learn, the semi
annual meeting of the State Agricul
tural Society, held at (luthbert last
week, was largely attended, and har
monious and pleasant in all its aspects
We have seen several dele; rtes, both
from our own and other sections, and
they all speak in warm and turgid terms
of their treatment by the citizen of
Cuthbert.
There being many important elections
to be held this year, is a matter of
course, there was a great deal of polit
ical talk and speculation among the dele
gates, and some such talk in the meet
ings This was very natural under the
circumstances. It would be so in any
equally large gathering of Georgia
Colonels, Mayors, Captains, etc., front
whatever class of people or arm of the
service they might be drawn.
A prominent member and officer of
the society remarked ■ us, after the
meeting was over, tlir 1 there was to be
a great revolution in 1 corgi a polities :
that the agriculturists v -re going here
after to “claim their rights 1 ' and elect
men of their ow n ohms to office \\ e
were also told that the names of Col
quitt and Hardeman were the ones most
frequently used at the meeting in con
nection with the next goveniijfsbip, with
a preponderance of talk in favor of the
latter. Well, to all this we have not
the least objection : all we ask of a
public official is honesty, competency
and close attention to business We
care not from what class he may come,
or whether he wears hay seed or bear's
oil iu bis hair. Vr.d further, in this
connection, will only say : that, if we
are to have one of the honest yeomanry
of the country,—a tardy .-. .tfi-red
son of Gil for our next governor,—if
a Cinelunatus is to be called from the
plow handles to the chair of -date, ft
had, herhaps, as well be Tom JLirJem
as any other man.
We 1 inve received from the United
States G.itofliologita! r mmkftou a jti
tle book called a “llepoi t on the Cotton
Worm/’ It is full of noautiful jrctures
of warms and bugs and of machines to
catch them, but we hv,c net had time I
to read it vet.
