A Good Fiver
Is always known by his appearance
A man who live- comfort.iblv at home,
has good dinners, etc., will always show
it in his person. But there is another
liver more important to man—it is the
bad liver —the liver that shcfttld regu
late the whole system. If that is out
of fix, man is good for nothing—can
enjoy nothing—to restore it to health,
use Dr. t.iiluv r s Liver PiL.s. A lev

Our gardeners have been pretty busy
this week putting in little seeds.
Will Janes will persist in wearing
those knock-kneed breeches. , ' *
We saw some dozen or more wagons
from Webster-county in town this week.
All left loaded with guano.
Ask your merchant for clothing man

The planters don’t come to town of

Most time to go fishing. It is said
that, the creeks aud ponds arc full of
the little minows.

The thrifty man will- always put

Our streets are enlivened every eycn

Peach and plum trees are blooming.
It is feared tliat the cold weather, which
is predicted for March, will destroy
much of the fruit.
The winter being mild and suitable,
the farmers are, no doubt, well up with
their work. Getting a good bulge on
making a crop is at least half the bat

The hens in this section must have
been ‘‘spreading ’ themselves laying, if.
one is to judge' from the quantity of

A fresh supply of Landretli s war

lot of flower seed, just received at

Sj. Valentine’s day passed almost
unobserved in Dawson. Our P. M. re

Dawson can justly feel proud of her
Saobath schools. They are, perhaps,
the best in the state; At least, stran
gers who come to our town say they
are.
We very much fear that the “on
time” business is going to ruin many ot
the farmers this year. Already some
of them are buying largely in that way,
and it would be well to remember that
they must pay up next fall or give up
land and stock.
A negro child was severely burned,
cn Mrs. Harpers’ plantation, last Tues
day. As usual, the mother was gone
and left the child to tilke care of the
place. It is thought the child will die.
Judge Samuel Williford, while in
town on last Saturday, was taken quite
sick. He was carried to Mr. N. W.

removed to his home in the country.
Wc are glad to learn that the J udge is
improving.

This gentleman again entertained a
large audience at the Court-house on

Fire, at J>over.
On last Sunday evening, about dark,
the storehouse of Mr. J. M. Grim, at
Dover, was destroyed by fire. Wc
understand that Mr Grim’s entire stock
of goods, three hundred and six tv-five
dollars in money, besides all of his
bocks, notes, accounts, etc., were con
summed. The fire, as wo learn, origi
nated near the stove. Mr. C rim intended
to apply for a policy, but at the time of
the burning had no insurance. Mr.
Grim is a young mau, just starting out
ill business, and the loss fulls heavily
upon him
After the tire was over, Mr. George
Hays stepped up to Mr. Grim audhand

Col. David E. Butler, of Madison,
Dr. Manguui, of Hapeville, and Col.
Newman, of the Southern hater prise.
Atlanta, all called on us last, week
’while on their way from Cuthberj.
Dr, Manguui speaks of locating here,
and going into the wine-making and bee
raising business.
Col, K. F. Crittenden, of Randolph
county, called on us yesterday. He is
one of the committee appointed by the
state agricultural society tuorgani/.c and
re-organize agricultural .clubs iu such
of the counties of this congressional
district as have nut already such clubs
in operation ; but ho was not •on that
business yesterday we believe. By the
way, if our agricultural friends want, a
man of their own class to represent them
in congress, we do not know that they
could find a more suitable One in this
district than Col. Crittenden. He is a
practical agriculturist, ant\ has the
ability to fitl a seat in the U. 8. House
of Representatives with credit both to
himself and any constituency, ti e
could vote to send the Colonel to Con
gress with great pleasure.
A Humbug'.
Some weeks ago there appeared in
this paper the advertisement of an At
lanta firm proposing to sell a “magnifi
cent watch for $2 60. We see the
same advertisement in a great many of
the weekly papers of the state, besides
numerous circulars offering the same
thing. Of course no one can expect to
get a good watch for $2.60, but some
persons here thought of sending on the
funds, but first wrote to a prominent
merchant of Atlanta to investigate the
matter for them. The reply received
states (bat the “watch man” is a fraud
ami advises the persons not to send
him any money. The merchant allud
ed to stated that the selling man was
always out when he called at his place
of business, aud that the firm seemed
to prefer sending by mail rather -than
selling direct to customers.
Fire Signa's,
The Fire Compauy at their meeting
last Monday night adopted the follow
ing signals to direct the ringing of the
fire-bell:
To summon the members to the us
ual and ordinary meetings of the com
pany, the bell will be rung fiu' or six
taps and-then a short intermission, aud
thus continue until about thirty taps of
the bell have been sounded.
.To announce an alarm of fire the
bell will be rung as loudly and rapidly
as possible until the members arrive at
the engine house j and just before the
engine leaves the room the bell will
cease ringing, and it (the engine) is ta
ken out and starts to the scene of fire
ihe bell will sound one time so as to
apprise all member! that the engine has
left the engine-house and for them to
repair to the lire. In case of false
alarm, the hell will be rung two taps
as soon as it is discovered that there is
no cause for the alarm ot lire.
We would again impress upon the
City Council the propriety and neces
sity of enacting a special ordinance
with a severe penalty attached, for any
interfering with the fire-bell, and to
punish false alarms of fire.
“Advance Aud Retreat. Personal

maps of celebrated battle fields. T lit 1

book poseses unusual interest at the
present time, when many disputes
and contentions have arisen among
critics and historians as to the accu
racy of official reports of many lead
ing events of the war, which are here
detailed, with a charming simplicity
of style ami perspicuity, which often
times bring before the reader the
thrilling scenes of the battle ground.
