A very’ creditable feature about the
churches of Dawson is that they
always pay their preachers what they
promise. The Methodist church has
paid its preacher this j-fiaf $1,000;
and the Baptist church for three
Sundays in each month has paid its
preacher S7OO.

We have quite a goodly number
of subscribers who always come up
in the beginning of the year and pay
for their paper in advance, arid these
subscribers we notice are generally'
best pleased with the paper. It is
needless for us to say that this class
of subscribers is highly esteemed,
and there is nothing within the
bounds of reason that we would not
most cheerfully do for them. They
are among our choicest friends.
Dr. W. It. King, Specialist.
Of Atlanta, will be in Dawson on
every Friday and Saturday of each
week for the next month. He can
lie found at Mr. Simmons’ Boarding
House. The Doctor's motto is “no
cure no pay.”
We have heard of one farmer in
our county who says that he made
1500 clear money on every plow that
he run. We have known this gentle
man for several years, and we know
him to be a tip top fanner, and if he
ever bought auy corn we have never
heard of it. This, then, we conclude,
is the Secret ttf his success—he raises
his own corn and his own meat at
home. Every farmer in Terrell coun
ty can make money if he will oßly do
likewise.

The Rev. Geo S. Johnston, of our

the South' Ga. Conference, which
convened in Albany on yesterday.
The presumption ks of course, that
he will be returned to us again.
Brother Johnston Atte labored earnest

The artesian well has been at a
stand still now for more than it week,
owiiig to a breakage about the force
pump. The gentlemen in charge of
this matter have done everything
possible to hasten repairs on the
pump and finally had to ship it to
Macon. These are accidents that
will occur, and otor people should
not become impatient. Mr. Rogers
is in no wise to blame for the delay,
and, we doubt not, that he will yet
give us a full flow of refreshing Si
lesian water for our “Christmas gift. "
It should be borne in mind that
artesian well boring requires consum
mate patience, and, after all, the de
lay will cost no more money.

Railroad disasters of late are quite
frequent in our state. On last Fri
day evening tbe passenger train from
Macon ran off the track just this side
of Eufaula wounding nine different
persons, some of them very seriously'.
It was caused by- a widening of the
track—a defective rail. The train
was behind time and was running at
the rate of 25 miles an hour. The
entire train of cars went headlong
over an embankment some thirty feet
high, turning, entirely over in the
descent. Tbe cars were found forty
yards from the track. The only
wonder is that every single person
on board was not killed.

At this season of the year every
farmer should be busy trying to add
some new improvement to his place,
to make it inofe valuable as well as
more comfortable and attractive.
Home should not only’be the dearest
spot upon earth, but it should be,
also, the most beautiful. Make your
homes attractive' and your children
will grow up to love them, but neg
lect them and the reverse will be
true. If only a tithe of the time
was employed in beautifying our
homes that we habitually waste in
idleness, we would be more happy,
more contented and far better off.
If for no other consideration, for his
children’s good, every inflri should be
busy and thoughtful about making
home pretty

-The Spelling Bee at the col
lege chapel on Friday evening, the
loth instant commences at 2:30
P. M., and will be Very interest
ing indeed. We challenge any
school or college in the State to
“out-spell” the pupils of our in
stitution. We cordially invite onr
friends, both home and abroad to
be present on this occasion, and
to take a part in the exercise if
I they desire. To the one standing
last upon the floor, in each class, a
prize will lie given. During the
morning the class in Penmanship
will practice for two premiums,
one to be given for the best speci
men, the other for the most im
provement. These will be pre
sented iii the afternoon also. Prof.
B. C. Adams throws down the
gauntlet to any pupil in the State
to contend for the championship
in ’' according to the
Sp&Werian system ngainst his class.
Nearly all of the colleges in the
State are either privately or pub
licly endowed; the buildings are
perhaps more beautiful, the
grounds surrounding them im
proved by art, but in point of
number, talent, morality, and close
attention to study we are not sur
passed. No pupil who crimes to
us is neglected. Mind, manners
and mol-ale are cultivated. A
pleasant home is provided, and
while each one is required to obey
rules, to pay strict attention tri
bells, yet all are treated as child
ren, encouraged —lauded and cor
rected if necessary. Send us your
sons and daughters and let them
reCeivC that which should be far
more precious to them than riches,
a thorough education.
The Christmas holidays will
commence on Friday next, as
school w ill close off that day, for
the present term. Girls and boys
are happy over the thought of go
ing home and anticipate a most
delightful time. We hope that all
w ill return with the new year
ready for close attention to books.
—The young people of Dawson
are determined that no stone shall
be left unturned to make the short
vacation enjoyable. Parties, mas
querades, candy pullings, egg
nogs, etc, are talked of, and de
cided upon, for almost every
day.
—Can the State of Georgia
show a more generous whole
souled people than those residing
in our little city? We made a
call for 1800 feet of ceiling for our
library, last Week, and lof Messrs.
Sam Lee, Lawson Melton, Dr.
Jones and Gwen Geise (the latter
of Brown’s Station) respoued
forthwith; and soon the sound of
the hammer will be heard and the
walls of the Eitterpean library be
ready for the paint promised by
those two thoroughly clever gen-
tlemen, whose names will be, pub
lished hereafter. Mr. Wesley
Dozier, now ili Savannah, engrav
ed his name i-iHlellibly upon the
hearts of our Euterpean young la
dies, by hi? very liberal cash con
tributioii to our library frfnd. May
all these deter gentlemen increase
in flesh and wealth,- all the days of
their lives.
—Prof. Ad finis is thinking (if taking
a short trip to the “Land of Flow
ers,” St. Andrews Bay, during the
Holidays. He says if he can get
oysters enough while' gone, lie
will out-work, out-talk, out-shoot,
and any mail in the state.
We hope the Prof, will succeed in
his desires, as the indications are,
that he will certainly have work
ing, talking and writing sufficient
to keep him busy iri the College
the coming term.
—YVe were delighted to wel
come to the McNulty House on a
short visit, Mrs. Mattie E. Davis,

spending soffte months in Atlanta.
A most charming lady, and a rela
tive of some of our sweetest girls.
—The editress of the Spy Leaf
“dubs” herself one of the “poor
children” and hopes those two
worthy committeemen, Messrs.
Orr nml Crouch, will remember
the fact, and act accordingly.
—W. C. Perry, one of our old
