We learn froiii the Talboiton New

The King of Denmark is truly a pa

Now is the time of year when all
debts, however small, should be set
tled up. Every man should wish to
know just exactly how he stands
with the world. The man who starts
out on the first day of the new year
with the consciousness that lie is out
of debt, and that no man can say he
owes him a dollar, will feel free and
happy throughout the entire year to
come. Happy will be the man who
can thus feel. Wherever it is im
practicable for a man to pay all of his
indebtedness by the first of the new
year, he should go frankly to his
creditors aud tell them so. He will
feel belter himself and his creditors
will respect him more, for this sort
of procedure bits tbe ring of an
honest man. If you are not able to
pay, no fair minded creditor will ex
pect it, but be will expect you to
come and tell him so at least.

how this enterprising firm can afford to
lavish so much expense in beautifying
a publication for which they ask ouly

it as a Christmas present. As its

Returned 1. 0111 Texasj
It vLli be remaindered by nlariy
of the readers of the Journal that a
large family by the name of of Bragg
removed from Terrell county year
before last to make Texas their future
home. We then predicted that this
family would, in a year or two, come
back to Terrell county. Sure enough,
on last Sunday, they arrived in Daw
don, determined to make Terrell
county their future home. In con
versation with two of the young
men who had jtisit returned, they
said that much money could be made
by farming in Texas, and while that
was one great advantage in favor of
that state, yet Georgia possessed
many superior advantages. They
also stated that they could find no
good water out there and that the
health of the entire family had been,
during their stay § in Texas, such as to
create within them a dislike and dis
gust for that state. Thus it is;
those who leave Terrell county aic
pretty sure td return if they can get
money enough to do so. We have
the best state in the Union, and
Terrell county is the “Garden spot
of the world.”

On last Thursday night the new

J. L. Janes, clerk, and J. W.

two of the council men being under

few years older. We trust and
believe they will give us an effici

Meeting of tle Board of Edu
cation.
The Board of Education, of
Terrell county, consisting of Geo.
W. Cheves, J. W. F. Lowrey,
N. W. Dozier, M. L. Hoyl and L.
M. Lenard met on last Monday
evening at the court house to in
vestigate the work of our county
school Commissioner for the year
ending 1882. The Board is glad
to report that, this efficient officer,
Judge L. M Lenard, has perform
ed his work well and faithfully.
In addition to the ordinary duties
of his office, the Commissioner
has, this year, been called upon,
under the law, to take the census
rtf all the children in the cottofy.
The increase of children over last
? r ear in attendance upon the pub
ic schools in the county is 248,
arid, therefore the pro rata share
of each pupil for the present year
was necessary less than last yfirtt:
The amount per capita ‘paid to
each white child in attendance
upon the public school for the
present year wass3.B6,the amount
paid colored children per capita
$1.65. There is also an increase
i > * the number of schools in the
county over last year. After ex
amining the work yf the Commis
sioner the Board assessed his
salary for the present year at
$250. The duties of the office of
school Commissioner, in many res
pects, are very arduous, and the
Board thinks that the salary fixed
is little enough. The status of the
public school interest in the coun
ty is probably in better condition
at this time than ever before, yet,
by no means as efficient as it
should be. The teachers, gener
ally, have done their work —'ll,
and o far as the Board is ii or t
ed are well satisfied with the
nmount’per capita received.
Bone by order of the Board
Dec-Uwlb 1882.
