Batler as a Democratie ,Candi
e ler President ! F
Albany‘gws-fif%. £
It is agmadter of gennine surprise
to us that any” eonsiderable number
of the 9emocmts of ‘the country
should entertain for a moment the
position that has . heen made to
nominate Ben Butler for the presi
dency in 1884. And this surprise is
turued into disgust jwhen we see the
Southern newspapers and politicians,
*iig\xi})gst? e .I\)g;n.loigranic, quietly
ajding and a‘)efimg_ in the movement
that has been put on foot to elevate
this contemptible old demagogue to
the highest position within the gift
of American people.
The democratic "party "ssgr.’lced
itself and made of itself a redicalous
laughing stock when it abaundoned
all principle anfl nominnted - Greeley
in 1875, and now it had botier wait
until it recovers from the damaging
and mortifying effects of that mis
takd bef‘yeii} suffers itself to be led
by the mose into another—and, if
possible, a woxse one.
How any decent Souathern Demo
crateor white man can ever getrhis
owr cofiéé'm' t?voté for Beast Batler
for I'resident or for any other posi
tion of respectibility, is something
that we cannot understand. What
has become of all our boasted Sonth
ern pride and chivalry when the man
who, as the commander of an inva
ding army, insulted the wowen of
the Soath, and issued an order -per
mitting and instructing his officers
and men to treat the women of New
Orleans as common prostitates, can
be regarded with favor as a candi
date for political preferment by
Southern people ! . The very name of
Beast Batler ought to be an offense
to every’ man [who holds women in
hofiqr,"and the crimes that he com
mitted during-and immediately after
thet war between the States cannot
be blotted out by the mdre recital of
accasional or accidental acts of kind
ness which some of the papers of the
country are now enaged in bringing
to light.
The tenderfooted Democrats of
Massachusetts may have “the Beast”
for their Governor if they want him,
but ‘whenever the Democratic party
ot the Republic surrenders to him
and makes bim its candtdate for the
Presidenc.y, then we will lose all the
respect we ever had for the party.

The ?qtt!:e in, the Closet.
Some sly old fellows have a habit
of keeping their brandy bottle under
lock™ and. key, where nobody but
themselves can get at it They
think nobody knows how often they
go to it, buta red nose gometimes
tells the tale louder than words can
speak it. The “bottle in the closet,”
if it contains brandy is mischievous.
Bat a “bottle in the closet,” full of
Perry Davis's Pary Kries, is just
what no family can afford to be with

A correspondent writing to the
Soutliern Cultivator gives expression
to the following bit of' wisdom :
“I hear a complaint from the
Southern farmers that they can find
no sale fon their oats or com. This
scems strange to me when all the
Southérn cities buy their corn from
the North ; certaiunly they will buy
Southern raised corn if shipped to
them. Bat why,not feed your corn
to hogs or cattle—certainly meat
will sell at home. I sometimes think
that there is a cnml_;inution among
the commergil people of the South
to prevent the Southern planter from
doing anything exeept plant cotton
Ido not know that this is 80, but I
do know that tliey 'givgl no encour.
agewent or Asshitadve to anything
Bave cotton planting.
Ifthe farmers of the South will
use more improved tools, and farm
more and-plant less, they will make
more money. And for the life of me
I don’t see why the Southern farmer
can’t make money raising corn for
seventy-five cents per bushel, when
the Western farmer gots ou‘lylthirt.\'
cente and has plenty of money to go
on. The labor of one man ought to
wake as much corn in the South as
the North.”

’ . Hery A, Roy, the Buffalo man who
passed through the thrilling advent
‘ure of a stage eoach roblery a short
time ago, is back in the city again.
Yesterday he told a reporter all*about
the Yosemite adventure. “Well,” he
said, “we were slowly elimbing up a
mountain just a mile gefore a high
bluff called. Inspiration Peint was
reached, the road along a narrow de
file dangerous close to the edge and
only three feet from the forest trees,
Mvhen two strapping fellows stepped
out and ealled “stop !”" to the driver.
The hour 11: 45 in the forenoon, as
I reccollect it. My position in the
stage was on the third seat, with Mr.
Webb on one side and Captain Mar
ry on the other. I looked qnickly
and sawat onge what the matter
was. Thetwo bandits had masks on
and each had a double barreled rifle
leveled almost in our faces. The
driver got. down at ynce and unhitch
ed the four horges, then turned their
beads down hill, all at the explicit of
the spokesman. The driver says
there were three robbers, but none of
the passengers saw more than two.
They were the coolest chaps I ever
saw—cool is no name for it. Their
work was accomplished with the nen
chalance of an every day job 1o which
they might have beén accustomed.
At the first instant I tried to unbut
ton my vest, not to get any weapon,
for I had none, bat to get my wateh
ont and slip it under the eashion
The scoundrels were 'oquick for me.
Leveling his gun at “{r. Webh, who
sat on the same seat, the active han
dit ordered him to throw up his
hands and come down. That left me
exposed, and a moment later it was
my turn. In ten seconds the five
men - had their hands up and were
standing at the rear of the coah .
The two ladies were allowed to re
wain on the driver's seat.
It was remarkable how quickly the
whole thing was dove. While one
bandit kept his rifle leveled the other
went through oar clothes. Mr,
Webb had a little revolver in his
pocket, the only weapon in the party,
but he didn’t have a chance to use it.
My experience was peculiar. laran
oed the robbers by turning around
sufficiently to look at my sister. The
second time I did -this the bandit
who was the searching drew a big
dirlc and raised it on me. I promised
submission right off. In the search
through my «lothes the tellow took
three cigars from a vest pocket, cool
ly putting one in his mouth and re
marking that there was nothing small
about him except his feet, when he
took €325 from another pocket, my
watch and chain from my vest, and,
last of all, my Knight Templar cross.
Then they let us go, and we went.’

Jail Delivery at Cuthbert.
(In Monday night the prisoners
confiined within the jail got out of
their narrow quarters and escaped.
The entrance into their cells consist
ed of one door with a double shatter
—one wood, and the otheriron. On
account of the very hot weather M.
Barry bad been leaving the wooden
shutter open. The iron shutter was
fastened on one side by three heavy
bolts bradded on the iunside. The
prisoners in some way got files and
with these filed away the bradded
heads and had nothing to do but to
push the bolts out, - pull the door
open and leave. Removing a plank,
they found their way to the lower
floor, and rushed out. They were
seen by Mrs. Millirons, whose family
occupias the lower rooms, who ‘gave
the alarm.
They were four in number: Willis

“Bad enough—twenty years of that
sort of thing,” responded a listener.
“What was the upshot of it?” 1
““T'he upshot was that some time ago
