Killed by Guats.
" Buffalo guats are terrible pests
fn the Mississippi valley. 'The
other day Bill Sneiss, in Critten
den county, Ark., was stung and
choked to death by these gnats.
When ha was found gnats were
erawling in and out of his ears and
nose. His mouth and nostrils were
filled with gnats. Swarms of gnats
had settled in his wide-stretched
eyes, and were feeding on the
sightless orbs. His elothing
was filled with gnats anda halo of
gnats hovered around the dead
man. Sueiss had been in the
L'Anguille swamp and it is
supposed that he tried ran to away
from the gnats. The insects were
8o thick, bowever, that they
drove him wild, and, finally becom
ing exhausted, he fell prostrate,
then was smothered by the swarms
of gnats. The death of Sneiss
must have been horrible—choked
into eternity by seehting, living
myriads of insects. This is the sec
ond case on record where buffalo
gnats have destroyed human lhife.
The Independent Texan.
A Texan is nothing if not inde
pendent. He is equally at heme in
a log cabin or in a palace. The is
strinkingly illustrated in the fol
lowing story from the Dallas News:
¥hile the Prince de solms was in
Texas ‘he was travelling from
Houston in the direction of New
Braunfels. He was founding a eol
ony of Germans at the latter point.
One morning he called at a gentle
man's residence and asked if he
could get breakfast. He was told
he could. Ina short spacs of time
broakfast was announced. The
owner of the house, Mr Dewees,
took bis sccustomed seat at the ta
ble. The bigh-born nobleman re
marked: “I am the Princo de
Solms, ard am not in the habit of
eating with any one but my own
staff.” To which Mr. Dewees re
plied: “Idon’t care if you are
prince of hell. I am prince of
these premises, and if you cannot
eat breakfast with me, you can do
without.” The German prince
laughed, took a seat and ate,
Attacfid by a Catamount.
A few nights since, Will Bry
ant, of Lee county, heard a com
motion among his dogs, and seiz
ing a pistol he hurried to the
seene. Un his arrival he found
his dogs badly whipped, but his
appearance gave them fresh cour.
age and they went for a strange
animal that was, seemingly, a lit
tle larger than either of his dogs.
They were quickly whipped back
and Will fired at it, the thing then
rashed on him, and he tried to
shoot again, but the pistol failed,
and in an instant his hand was
terribly lacerated by the boast.
The dogs ran in again, - and” the
beasi run them off and as it leap
ed the fence was followed by an
other shot from the pistol in Mr.
B.’s hands. Previous to visiting
his place, it bad whipped cut all
the dogs for a neighbor a short
distance off.—Americus Republi

RELICS OF BARBARISM.
Good Friday Repentance in Mexico--
Pumshing the Wickedest Men.
Mexican letter in Kansas City Times
Once a year, on Good Friday,
the Mexicans select a vietim for
the whipping, and sometimes
more than one. The selection is
made by taking the worst one
of tue lot. This is determined by
all making = confession before a
puiest of the year’s misdeeds, and
the one decided to be the worst
sinner is selected as a sort of
“scape roat” to bear the torture.
The martyr is prepared at the
church by being stripped nearly‘
naked and by being prayed for. ‘
Then he is made to carry a heavy |
cross full ten feet high, with tle
cross arm of five or six feet in
length, and made of wood six to
eight inches in diameter. He car
ries this eross for a considerable
distance to a place selected for
the purpose, where there is anoth
er larger cross erected. Arrivingl
at the upright cross, he carries his |
cross around it and is then per- l
mitted to lay it down. Here the I
business takes a turn not quite so l
agreeable to the candidate, for Le !
finds & crowd of horsewhippeis,
surrounding him. I'wo of these |
horsewhippers are armed with |
large cactus bushes of what is
commonly called “tree cactus” or
‘‘cane cactus,” on account of its
being used to make walking canes
of. This cactus grows to the
height of three or four feet and is
armed with thousands of needle- |
like spines fully an inch long
The main stalk is as large as al
man’s wrist at the ground, brauch- |
ing off as it rises, and each branch |
having many lateral branches
from three to five inches in length,
all fully armed with needle-like
thorns, which are very poisonous,
the prick causing very painful, l
festering wounds in a short time. l
Seizing one of these cactus |
bushes by the batt, and which has
been trimmed for the purpose, !
two begin the ceremony by stril- ;
ing the candidate on the naked
back and marching him around !
the cross, the rest keeping up a |
continuous shouting and singing, !
with musie by a sort of wind-in
strament. Having whipped him
around until their bushes are
broken up, they form a procession
and march him back to the church
door, where he s stopped. Here,
with sticks like laths, the adher
hering pieces of cactus are seraped
off of him and placed on the
ground in the door where he is
next to enter, walking barefoot
on the pieces of cactus. Affer
this the victim is allowed to be ta
ken to his home, to get well or die,
as the case may-be. He is not
allowed to pull out the thorns un
til they come out by feetering, and
it frequently occurs that six or
eight months elapse before he re
covers.
I went to see one of thess cere
monies through curiosity, and 1
am not curious enough to go to
see another. The sight of the
bleeding victim, subject to torture
that far exceeds burning at the
stake,is no attraction to me, though
the poor victim never uttered a
single groan dming all the per
formance.
Miraculous Escape.
W. W. Reed, Iruggist, of Win
chester, Ind., writes: “One of
my customers, Mrs. Louisa Pike,
Bartonia, Randolph county, Ind.,
‘was a long sufferer with Consump
tion, and was given up to die by
‘her physicians, She heard of Dr.
’King’s: New Discovery for Con
sumption, and began buyirg it of
me. In six montlks’ time she
walked to this city, a distance of
six miles, and is now so much im
proved she has quit asing it. She
feels she owes her life to it.”

Some Campaign Developments.
Constitution
Every day of the gubernatorial
campaign brings additional evi
dence that General Gordon is the
candidate for th people. Even
his opponents have dropped the
chaige that Le is the candidate of
“the Atlanta ring.” Thersis nct
the shadacw of doubt that Gener
al Gordon would go into the con.
vention with over two thirds of
the counties if primaries were
{held in every county.
‘ The Bacon men recognize this
and it is an ordinary thing to hear
‘them admit it. This significance
lof this fact will not ba lost on the
| pablic. It explains why the
the of Mr. Bacon oppose primary
felections, and why they hurry up
the little courthouse meetings. Tt
also explains why the friends of
Gordon are for primaries. We
are Icth to charge any man with
being the candidate of “a ring.”
That sort of thing has long ago
become contemptible. DBub it
does look as if the charge might
rest against Mr. Bacon, with Lis
littl> corterie of political workers
in every country town and the
haste with which they hateh up
hasty little caucuses in the court
houses.
The Gordon’s positive and de
termined stand for the railroad
commuission law, as it is., has ral
lied the peaple about his stand
ard. The fact that the friends (f
the commission, almost without
exception, are actually at work for
him, and that the railroad mana
gers and the opponents of the
commission support Major Bacon,
is making this issue very sharp
and definite.
As to the joint disenssion, Ma
jor Bacon continues to mildly
wallop General Gordor in the Ma
con Telegraph. Everywhere ¢lse,
General Gordon wallops Rajor
Bacon. As the voting will be
don: outside of the Macon Tele
graph, it will ba seen that this di
vision of things is perfeetly sitis
factory to Gen. Gordon'’s {riends.
To-night the cendidates mect in
Augusta,where it is believed {here
will be a very large meeting an'
a good deal of fun.
Only Ealf Alive.
There are hosts of men and wo
men who, to coir. a phrase, are
ouly half alive. That is to say,
they have seldom if ever any ap
petite, are nervous, weak, fidgetty
and troubled by numberless small
pains and aches. In the presence
of vigorous, exuberant vitality
they seem» mere pigmies. Sucl
persons are fond of frequently
dosing themselves, swallowing in
the course of the year enough
drugs to stock any apothecary’s
shop of average dimensions. This,
of course, defeats instead of fur
thering the end in view, viz., the
recovery of health and vigor.
Were they to seek it from an un
failing source of vitality, Hostet
ter’s Stomach Bitters, how differ
ent would be their case. Then
vigor would return to its debilita
ted frames, the glow of health to
its wan cheeks, their trembling
uncertain gait would grow frm
and elastic, appetite, that grand
est of all sauces, would give a rel
ish for the daily food, were i: ev
er so course, and refreshing sicep
wouald erown the tasks of the day.
