Spying.
1 sit in the light honse tuwer’
With a spyglass in my hand,
And to test its wondrous power .
1 scan the sea and land.
The long dnr nears its ending,
The sun sinks to the sca,
The snnset colors blending
In gentle harmony.
The beach is still and lonely,
No one but me is near,
The glass discloses only
A ovuple on the pier.
Far out from land they're sitting,
She nestling close to him,
And with ardor unremitting
They spoon in the twilight dim.
Her head upon his shoulder,
Bhe sits in perfect bliss,
And smiles when he grows bolder,
And steals from her a kiss.
And I mildly wonder whether
They would sit upon the pier,
And spoon like that together,
If they knew that I washere. |
A Signifieant Omission. 1
Ma. EpiTor:— In the report
of thai incomparable speech of
H u. J. C. C. Black as published
the Weekly Constitution, the fol
lowing 18 left out, viz: “All this
Georgia and her sister State have
suffered at the hand of her enemies
but more cruel than wrongs done
by hostile hands were wounds
inflicted by some of their own
children. They basely bartered
themselves for the spoils of office.
They aligned themselves with the
enemies of the penpleand their lib
«rties until the battle was fought
and then with satanic effrontry
insulted in the presence of the
virtuous and brave by coming
among them, and forever fixed
upon their ignoble ! brows the
stigma of a double treachery by
prozlaiming that they had joined
our enemies to betray them. They
were enemies to the mother who
had nurtured them. They bowed
the knee and spit upon her. They
eried*Hail!” and smote her on the
cheek; they put a sceptre in her
band,but it waga fragile reed;they
erowned her,but it was with thorns;
they covered with purple the
wounds which their own hands
had inflicted upon her, and
inscribed beautiful titles over the
eross on which they had fixed her
to perish in ignomy and pain. They
had quarreled with and weakened
the Confederacy out of pretended
love for the habeas corpus and
now they sustained a government
that tramped upon every form of
law and every princible of liberty.
They were foremost in leading
the people into war, and now
they turned upon them to punish
them for treason. Even some who |
were still loyal at heait, appalled
by the danger that surrounded
us, overwhelmed by the powers |
that threatened us, were timid in
spirit and stood silent witnesses
of their country’s ruin. Others
there were, many others, as loyal,
brave, noble, heroic spirits as ever ‘
enlisted in freedom'’s cause, they
eould suffer defeat in honorable
war, but could not, without re
sistance, though fallen, submit to |
insult and oppression. Their fort
unes were destroyed, the fields |
desolated, their homes Jajd in 1
ashes, their hopes, blightad, but
they would not degrade their man-
Bood. To their invincible spirit
and heroic resistance we are in
debted for the peace, prosperity
snd good government we enjoy
to-day. Long live their names
and deeds. Let our poets sing
them in undying songs; let our!
historians register them in imper- }
jshable records; let our teachers
teach them fn our sehools; let our
mothers recount them in our
homes; let our painters transfer
their very forms and features to
adorn qur public halls; lot the
deft hand of the sculptor chisel
them out of the granite and mar
lgle to beautify our thoroughfares;
let every true heart and memory
born and to be born, embaln; them
forevey,"
« When it s rem smbered that the
“Weekly Constitution is the princi
pal seoular paper circulating
shroughout our country precincts,
the omission is rather insignifi
-cant. If Mr. Black was brave

“Yes, dear.”
“John, do you realize that you

“Have I, dear?”
“That’s all, and yon ought to
