Deogs That Get Drunk.
Jndianapolis Journal.
Dogs that stay about saloons much
of the time very often acquire a
taste for beer by drinking water
into which a little beer is poured.
ThLe appetite for it grows until they
relish pure beer. They often be
come very fat from drinking it.
The most famous of dog tipplers
ever in the city was Jack, a big
mastiff owned by John Brough.
He long ago sunk into a drunkard's
.grave. The Circle hou.e saloon was
his favorite loafing place, and he
was a sort of hail fellow among
the human drinkers who congre
gated there. He would wag his
tail and beg for beer when he saw
anyone drinking, and if his prayer
was not answered he would go be
hind the counnter and lap from the
drippings in the bucket. He would
sometimes get so drunk that he
would walk on both sides of the
pavement when he got out. His
feet would be put out slowly and
fumblingly, the four of them being
pushed far out to four pionts of the
compass to keep from falling.
He would often “not g- home un
til morning.” Early risers have
many a time seen him staggering
along the streets, getting home as
best he could. He was alwaysill
when in his cups, and those who
knew him gave him plenty of room
at such times. A local sports
man is said to own a pointer which
isof a rather lazy temperment. The
dog keeps his ey« ont, and when
ever he sees his master getting his
gun ready and fixing up his wagon
to go hunting, hurries to a neigh
boring saloon and drinks until he
13 too drunk to move.

Mr. J. M. Norris, an old resi

had been badly troubled with

The shipwrecked crew of the
British Bark DBenefuctress were
adrift in an open boat, supporting
lifs on some bits of dry bread and
a few apples. This was slim farc,
and reduced them to a state of
great feebleness. But Brown's
Iron Bitters brings enfeebled
folks up rapidly, even from such
depths as this. It enriches the
blood, tones the system, and gives
healthful strength. Mr. Wm.
Hardeo, of Ennis, Texas, writes
that he had dyspepsia in its worst
form, but was restored by Brown’s
Iron Bitters.

' A Demand for Womecn.
Cnicago Mauil.
The demand for women in the
northwest is only excecded by the
demand for rain. Outin Wagon
Wheel Ida.,recently,a couple of old
maids were called there to attend
‘a dying brother. The brother died,
‘but before the girls could get away
the whole male population was
after them, including the mayor,
justice of the peace and otherno
tables. Excitement ran high,and
bids were six to onaon the mayor
et al. In six days after their arri
val the battls was over and the girls
both engaged. The mayor had been
cut out by a stiapping young miner
of thirty. The weddings were set
and the mother sent, for, in order
that proper eclat might be given.
She arrived in due season, and
at onco sailed into the girls for
their disrespect of their late broth
er and their immoderate haste. She
declared the marriages off,and an
nounced her intention of taking
her danghters home with her. In
despair a mass-meeting was called
and the mayor was appointed a
committee to wait on the mother
and persuade her to reconsider
the former notion. Like all good
mayors, Chicago’s included, this
gentleman waited upon the irate
mother. He called her attention to
the great need of Wagon W heel and
in the nameof patriotism implor
ed her not to inflict such a crush
ing blow on the hopes of the town.
The mother was obdurate,
and declared that she
wonld not depart with
out her danghters. On this hint the
mayor spok> IHe at once proposed
a compromise. The mother necd
not depart at all. She was fair
fataud fifty odd. Sowas he. They
would pool their issues. Andtley
did. The three women are loy
concocting excuses by which all
their belated femalo friends and
relatives east can be brought to
Wagon Wheel. :
An Alligator Swaltows a Man.
Orange City (Fla.) Times.
Last week a man, presumably a
tramp, knocked at L. P. Thurshy’s
door abo at 9 o’cloek at night after
the family had retived. Mr.
Thursby strack a matech and re
sponded to the call. The man
stated that he had walked fifteen
‘mles that afternoon to take the
‘night boat hound north and got
Toft, and wanted to stay all night.
Thursby handed him a key and
pointed to the barn, stating that
that was the best he could do for
’ him. Nt until after Mr. Thars
iby had retired sometime did he
think of the ten-foot aligator his
' boys had in the barn for - the en
tainment of strangers next winter,
and worried econsiderably about
the man. Assoon as he dressed
he harried out to the barn next
morning to see about the man.
He found the door locked with
the key turned on the inside. 1l
forced a side window open, found
the alligator in its usual coruer,
but the man was missing. The
evidenco gathered points to the
destruction of the man during the
night, as the animal ate nothing
during the next few days, Noth
ing can be heard of the man, and
it is believed lie came to au un
timely end that night. Whether
the man was a worthless tramp or
an honest and worthy citizen, it is
one of the saddest catastrophes
