Information r=aches us that last

X A Phenomenon.
For the last two or three weeks
a very fine mist similar to that of
a foggy morning has been falling
uninterraptedly in a space about
25 feet square near a cherry
tree in the yard of Mr. Malon
Hoyl, about two miles from the
city. On the brightest as well as
the clondest days this fine rain
falls, and since it beeame known
hundreds have visited Mr. Hoyl’s
to see for themselves what is
thought by many to be the most
wonderful freak ever heard of.
With but few exceptions it is
thought to be a fine rain-fall,
while the philosophy of others,
and the most reasonable yet pre
sented,is thatit is the sap from the
cherry tree, which has shed its
leaves. At this season of the
year the sap all returns to the
roots of the tree, and there being
such an abandance of sap,it ecannot
all be condueted by the nataral
causes, and the bark of the cher
ry tree being thin, the sap exudes
and is carried from the tree by
the atmosphere and falls to the
ground like mist or a very
slight sprinkle of rain. Other
cherry trees in the neighbarhood
were examinaed and the same light
mist was found falling near them.
| Dawson as a Market.
Dawson has always been recog
nized as one of the leading cotton
markets of this section, and the
prospects are that it will continue
sO. .So far, she has been paying
right along with the olher neigh
boring towns having no better
frcilities, and there is no doubt at
all that this stata of things will
continae throughout the season.
Dawson offers the planters of
Webster, Randolph, Calhoun and
Stewart as many inducements as
any of the rival towns, and the
advantages which we possess, two
numerons to mention, will cor
tainly bring a largs portion of the
cotton of the above named coun
ties to our market.

The Quarterly Meeting.
The fourth quarterly conference

Death of a Good CTitizen.
Mr. W. N. TlLoruton died at his
heme in this city yesteiday after
noon, at-about half past 3 o’cloek,
after an illness of two or three
weeks with typho-malarial fever.
We go to press too early to give
an extended account of the death,
but Mr. Thornton, who for the
last five or six years has been
Sheriffs of this county, was a sterl
ing,upright and progressive citizen
and was universally like and es
teemed for his many virtues. He
was a member of the Baptist
church. He leaves a wife and five
small children. We deeply sym
pathize with the bereaved.
| Dr. George A. Lofton.
~ The many friends in Dawson
of the above pamed gentleman
will read with interest the follow
ing from the Baptist Reflector,
»published at Chattanooga, Tenn.;
“Dr. G. A. Lofion has resigned
at Dalton, Ga., and accepted a
call to Talladega, Ala., and we are
glad of it; not that we are glad
that Dalton loses a most exceilent
pastor, but that Talladega, after
losing une of the grandest men of
the Soath, from a thirty years
pastorate, secures so good a man
to saceeed him. Brofixer Lofton
has often been in onr office within
the last two years, and we have
studied him closely. He is a no
ble, big-souled, earnest Christian
minister. Since 1870 he has add
ed about 1,000 souls to the
charches in Memphis, St. T.ouis
and Dalton, and unler sound, un- }
sensatienal preaching. His pas
torate at Dalton has been a mar
velous success--half the church
debt ~as been paid, and sixty
members have been added. We
rejoice to know that his health
has been entirely restored, and
that in entering upon bis new
field of labor he will not have to
contend with nervous prestration,
as in former years. May God
abundantly bless both pastor and
people!”
County Cominissioners’ anrt;
