] Seunator Jones Gives it Up.
i From the St. Tal Da'ly Globe.
Senator Jones, it is said, has at
last been brought to see the use
lessness of his campaign work in
his own behalf ir Detroit, and has
indicated his iutentinn to returp
before tha wintry blasts begin to
blow from off Lake Erie’s frozen
surface to hisown balmy Florida,
where the maidens are more kind,
, and where, instead of glerious mid
| winter storms, the gentle breeze
softly stir the palmetto leaves.
This declared intention of the Sen
ator’s, in view of his persistent
baunting of Detroit for so many
month, 18 surprising enough, but
his futher purpose, as expressed
in a letter to friend, is even more
surprising. He intends to be
again a cafididate before the Flor
ida Legislature for re-election to
t he Senate.
Had his pursuit of the obstinate
Detroit beauty, at whose shrine he
knelt in vain, been crowned with
success his constituents might
have forgiven the absence from his
post of duty, and even commend
ed his cause. But when he returns
smitten with defeat, and thus in
cidentally reflecting upon every
true born Southerner, he cannot
expect to be granted the Senator
s Lip as a consolation prize. Had
ha retnrned with the prestige of
victory, the young woman on his
arm, he would have been heralded
with the approbation due a con
