% LIVELY, BUSY DAWSOY,
‘where he was most hospitably en_
tertained at the Farnum House,
‘which is conducted by that pleas
ant lady, Mrs. Carver, who has
the pecaliar knack of making all
her guests happy. Here the
“drummers” are sure to ‘‘stop,”
and are wont to congregate when
Sunday approaches. It is a nice,
elean, well kept establishment.
Dawson owes its origin to the
advent of the Scuthwestcrn rail
roal, and was settled in 1853.
Tha sgricaltural merits of Terreil
county have ouly recently come
fally into notice,
Even after the wir her “cow
hide pebbly lands,” as thoy were
designated, were not in repute,
and wera held very cheap. Buta
radical change has taken place
since that time. Real estate has
advanced several hundred per
cent. in value, every footof the
soil bas been taken up, and not
withount reason, the peop'e assert
that theirs is the garden spot of
of Georgia. Intensive farming is
becoming the rale, and the farm
ers appear contented and have no
desire to emigrate,
ALL FULL.
There are no vaeant stores or
dwellings in Dawsen, and the
town is steadily advaneing in pop
ulation and importanee. One
drawback only exists. Owing to
the competition at that point, Al
bauny enjoys through rates in the
stipment of cotton to New York
and elsewhere, which enables her
to offer better prices for the sta
ple than ecan be affordad here,
[his has eaused & diversion of
several hundred bales to that
mariket. The people seem resolv
ed, however, to remedy this by
conmnecting themselves by rail
with the Central City of South
Georgia and are moving for that
purpose. Verily, railroal com
plications are hidra-headed and
what builds up one community
pulls down another.
Nataral outlets, speedy trans
portation and the laws of trade
are bound to control the situation.
But it does seem hard that the
pioneer enterprises which devel
opad the country and redeemed it
from the wilderness should be
crippled by short cuts anl air
line routes. This result, however,
i 3 inavitable. Railroad commis
sious and all ageuncies are power
less to intervene, provided the
necessary capital can be raised to
build and complete the new en
terprises.

under the auspicas of the Colum

seme 8 or 10 miles south of Colum

that the road bed of the cld B. (.

unless the Company parpose ma

gathered (rom the carrent report
touching the new road, and if 50,
well. But otherwise it taints our
