THE JOURNAL.
E. L. RAINEY, - Editor.
Ouly a Printing Office Towel.
“Who's dead down at your
‘house, Mr. Pendriver,” asked Murs.
Yeast, meeting the village editor
on the street.
“Why, no one was dead at my
bhouse when I left,” replied the
editor, apparently unconcerned.
“Well, I certainly saw some
thing black hanging from the
door knob when I passed this
morning.”
“Oh, yes; the ‘devil’ left the of
fice towel out there to dry, that's
all”
Babies in The White House.
THE press is discussing just
now the subject of babies in the
White,House. Ithas been said that
the only baby born in the man
sion is vow a lawyer in Montgom
ery, Ala., son of the private secre
tary of Mr. 2.}k. DBut somebody
has raked up this about the daugh
ter of the private secretary of
President Jackson: “When the
Treasury Department was dedica
ted, Andrew Jackson, who was
Prasident, was waited upon and
asked if he wished to have any
thing special deposited in the cor
ner stone. “No,” Le said, “noth
ing I think of.” Then calling the
messenger back, he said: “Wait
a 8 moment. I will send a lock of
baby’s hair.” This he did send.
The then baby is now Mrs. Lliza
Wilcox, a elerk in the department
of which ber lock of baby hair
was placed in the corner-stoneasa
relic.
How She Cured Him of Swearing.
A busband of a certain Nash
ville lady was, before marriage, a
furions swearer. Through the
wife’s influence be left of this bad
habit, except one favorate cusre
word which clung to him under
all circumstances, and which, to
the great annoyance of the good
wife, he would unconciously use
everywhere the word “damn.”
Several months sinca ha arose
ome morning before the servant
came in to make the wood fire,
and after a long effort and fruit
less barning of matches turned
and said:
“Sallie, this damn fire won't
barn.”
To this the good wife earnestly
said: “Yes, the damn wood is too
green, and the damn servant has
forgotten to bring up any damn
kindling to start the damn fire
with.”
He looked at his wifein dismuy,
but a‘ once saw the point and said
nothing.
A longer period than usnel pass
ed withoul the favorite expletive
being us~d, but later on he want:d
8 baskel, and said after lookinz
for it:
“Sallie where is the damn bas
ket got to?”
The wife quiatly, as if putting
a baby tosleep, said:
“Ask the damn cosk to zet ti:
damn basket—damu her she keep
it.”
As belore, ha sail nothing, bat
months have pascel, ani if h
damns anything it isn’t whers she
is. She say it was like taking
quiniuve, and she always wont and
washed ogt her mouth aftorwards,
but ke is cured.

| The Parent of Ensomnia.
. The parent of insomnia or
‘wakefulness is in nine cases out of
ten a dyspeptic stomach. CGood
digestion gives sound sleep; indi
gestion interferes with it. The
brain and the stomach sympathize.
One of the prominent symptoms
of a weak state of gastric organs
is a disturbance of the great nerve
enlrepot, the brain. Invicorate
the stomach, and you restore
equilibrinm to the great centre.
A most reliable medicine for the
purpose is Hostetter’s Stomach
Bitters, which is far preferable
to mineral sedatives and powerful
narcoties,which, though they may
for a time exeit a soporofic influ
ence upon the brain, soon ecase to
aet, and invariably injure {he tune
of the stomazh. The Bitters, on
the contrary, restore activity to
the operatious of that all import
ant organ, and their beneficient
inflaence 18 reflected in sound
sleep and atranquil state of the
nervous svetem. A wholesome
impatus is likewise given to the
action of the liver aud bowels by
its use.
~Cure for Pilrs. |
Piles are frequenily preceded
by a sense of weight in the back,
loins and lower pait of the aWflo
men, causing the patient to sup
pose he has some affection of the
kidneys or neighboring organs.
At times, symptoms of indiges
tion are present, flatuleney, unea- 1
siness of the stomach, ete. A
moisture-like perspiration, pro- ‘
ducing a very disagreeable itch
ing, after getting warm, is a com- '
mon attendant. Blind, Rleeding |
and Itching Piles yield at ouce to
to the applieation of Dr. Bosan

rectly upon the parts affected, ab
sorbing the I'nmors, allaying the
