THE JOURNAL.
E. L. RAINEY, - Xditor.
Some people have uo more sense
than to ask a man who is address
ed by the title of “Colonel” in
what war he was.
A man can scarcely find room
to spit in Georgia for the new rail
road projects and enterprises that
are lying around loose ull over the
ground. ,
“How can I get rid of fleas on
my cat?”’ asks a subscriber. Easy
enough. Soak the cat in four feet
of water until the fleas rise to the
‘surface. Then bury the cat.
A scientific writer says the
Amarican of to-day is not the bil
ions man of fifty years ago. No
the bilious man of fifty years ago
succurcbed to the doctor ere this,
A little white boy, apparently
about ten years old, and repre
senting himself to be an orphan,
destitute and homeless, was found
on the streets of Cuthbert Sunday
avening. i
A Maryland paper chronicles
the sad fate of a Mr. Bunting, who
was run over by a train and had
‘two of his legs cut off.” If Mr.
Bunting isn't more economical
with his legs, first thing he knows
he'll have to go lame.
An old maid remarked the other
day that she went to sleep at night
her own boss, got up her own boss
in the morning, was her own boss
all day, and she intended to re
main her own boss. That's her
privilege, but we'll wager a few
dry beans tha! she feels very lone
ly at times. -
A sensible girl of Shelbyville
111, learniug that two of her lov
ers had fought abo .t her, prompt
ly notified each that she had no
desire to see either of them again,
as men who could not control their
tempers better than to fizht for a
woman were just the kind to fight
with a woman after marriage.
A four-vear-old child in Coal
port, Pa., has, apparently,no bones.
It folds its legs behind its head as
readily as other persons fold their
arms in the same place, it uses its
feet to scratch its head quite as
often as it uses its hands, and con
torts its body in a most remarka- ‘
ble way. Otherwise it is like
other children. |
A medical journal says “going
to bed on an empty stomach is a
good way to invite sleeplessness.”
Another medical authority says
that “‘eating just before retiring |
prevents sl2ep.” The enly alter- ‘
native seems to be, if a man wishes
to get a night's sleep, is to ge to
bed without his stomach. |
Two editors out West have been
indulging in newspapertorial
amenities, and have reached the
climax by one calling the other
“an enlarged and inflamed zeke.”
We confess our ignorance as to
what kingdom of nature this
“zeke” belongs, but suppose it is
outside the law’s dominion and
can be safely handled by belliger
ent editors, and thus recommends
itself,
There was a large boiler of
scalding water over a fire in the
yard, and several black children
playing near it. Suaddenly a
shrill voice was heard from insida
the shanty: “Youa George Wash

biler. D'reatly you is gwiie to
ups>t de biler an 1 scald yersef to
def; and when you is, you'll be de
fust one to say, ‘“’Twasn’t me,
mamwmy.”
A few months ago John Autoliff,
of Jackson, Michigan, wanted a
wife, but was too bashful to do
his own courting. He confided
his troubles to Randelph June, a
neighbor, and the latter offered to
conduct the preliminary negotia
tions for $3OO. He did so, and
was successful, and about a month
ugo Autcliff was married to a wo
man he never saw uutil introduced
to her hy June. Hm‘dl)y was the
honeymoon over when June began
to clamor for his £3OO. Auteliff
deniad the claim and June brought
ruit. The oase came up for trial,
but Auteliff had in the meantime
come to the realization of the
blessing June had secared for him,
and paid the claiw in fu!l, with

A FATAL MISTAKE.
" Tur Clevelaud (Ohio) Press,
of February 23d, 1883, pub
lished an account of a fatal
surgical operation which caused
a great commotion among med
ical men throughout the whole
country, Dr. Thayer, the most
eminent surgeon in Cleveland,
pronouncing it scandalous, It
appears that a Mis. King had
been suffering for many years
from some disease of the stom
ach, which had resisted the
treatment of all the physicians
in attendance. The disease
commenced with a slight de
rangement of the digestion,
with a poor appetite, followed
by a peculiar indeseribable dis
tress in the stomach, a feeling
that has been described as a
faint “all gone” sensation, a
sticky slime collecting about
the teeth, causing a disagree
able taste. This sensation was
not removed by food, but, on
the contrary, it was increased.
After a while the hands and
feet became cold and sticky—
a cold perspiration. There
was a constant tired and lan
g;id feeling. Thenfollowed a
adful nefrvousness, with
gloomy forebodings. Finally
the patient was unable to re.
tain any food whatever, and
there was constant pain in the
abdomen. All prescribed rem
edies failing to give relief, a
consultation was %leld, when it
was decided that the patient
had a cancer in the stomach,
and in order tosave the patient’s
life an operation was justifi
able. Accordingly, on the 22d
of February, 1883, the opera
tion was performed by Dr.
Vance in the presence of Dr.
Tuckerman, Dr. Pemier, Dr.
Arms, Dr. Gordon, Dr. Capner,
and Dr. Halliwell of the I;o]ice
Board. The operation consist
ed in laying open the cavity
of the abdomen and exposing
the stomach and bowels. When
this had been done an examin
ation of the organs was made,
but to the horror and dismay
of the doctors there was no
cancer to be found. The pa
tient did not have a cancer.
When too late the medical men
discovered that they had made
a terrible mistake; but they
sewed the parts together and
dressed the wound that they
had made, but the poor woman
sank from exhaustion and died
in a few hours. How sad it
must be for the husband of this
poor woman to know that his
wife died from the effects of a
surgical operation that ought
never to have been performed.
If this woman had taken the
proper remedy for Dyspepsia
and Nervous Prostration (for
this was what the disease really
was), she would have been liv
ing to-day. Snaxer ExTrACT OF
Roets, or Seier’s CURATIVE
Syrup, a remedy made ex
pressly for Dyspepsia or Indi
gestion, has restored many such
cases to perfect health after all
other kinds of treatment have
failed. The evidence of its
efficacy in curing this class of
cases 18 too voluminous to be
published here ; but those who
read the published evidence in
favor of gxis dyspeptic remedy
do not question its convincing
nature, and the article has an
extensive sale. o s
