Drs. J. B. Roberts and H. C.
^lodges were called to Mr. Mar
shal G. Tompkins, a young man
about eighteen yeays old and
living with Mr. Doolittle, who
was bitten on the instep of the
foot by a large Moccasin last.
Saturday evening about 5
p’clock, while wading across a
small stream near Buffalo creek,
and died Sunday night at 10
o’clock.

sided over by this talented and dis
tinguished gentleman. The man
ner in which he discharged h's
arduous duties and .the attention
paid by him in elucidating difficult
questions of both law and evidence
so that jprors could understand the
case, before them for consideration
apd make an intelligent yerdict,
lias gained for. him many friends iu
this county, and made him popular
with our whole people, Learned
able, dignified, courteous and
impartial, he is indeed a Judge of
whom Georgia has a right to feel
proud qf and we hope that this will
not be his last visit among us.

That negro who objected to
being tried for his life with one of
his own race on the jury knew
that if there is anything which
one darkey likes better than the
freedom of a \vatermelQU patch it
is to see another darkey get into
a bad scrape and stay there.
Chicago Tiubune.
Negroes do not like to be tried
by negro jurors. The first negro
juror in Atlanta the other day,
promply joined in convicting a
negro whp was put on trial. The
next prisoner, also a negro,object
ed to having one of his own race
on the jury. In Virginia some
time ago a colored prisoner made
the same objection on the ground
that “niggers would hang a nig
ger just to see him kick.” The
agitation of the southern chivalry
with reference to negrq jurors is,
in the light of these facts, very
much misplaced.
New Yoke Tiuhunk.
Atlanta has had its first negro
juror, who promply joined in eon
vioting a negro who was put on
trial. The next, prisoner was an
other negro, charged with murder
who strenuously objected to having
one of bis own race on the jury
There was another such ease in
Virginia some time ago, when a
colored prisoner made the same
objection on the ground that “nig
gers would hang a nigger just to
see him kick.” Whether this was
more self-libel, or was physiologi
cal truth, the reluctance of blacks
Yon see, standing in with North
ern politicians as I did, gaye me an
insight into the result of the Chicago
Convention.”
“You are wrong.”
“You are a liar.”
“You are a black liar.”
“You are a striped liar.’,
“You are a lying lizard.”
“And you are a falsifying wood
pecker,”

mer without injury, but calling me a
woodpecker is casting a slur on my
family.” The Captain stooped and
picked up a curious looking stone
and draw back t o strike the Colonel.

The captain lowerd his arm, and
the colonel rushed up, took a micro
scope and began to examine it. “Sil
ver, by the Stars and Stripes!
One hundred dollars to the ton.”
Two hours later the two men had
ground the rock into dust and were,
as the best of friends, examining _i,t

pute than by lighting.
