The citizens of Washington county
met in the Court House at Saniiers-
ville, Ga., on Wednesday evening
Sept. 15. 1880, for the purpose of or
ganizing a Norwood Club, Col. J
K. Hiues was called to the chair, and
in a brief manner explained the ob
ject of the meeting.
The Club was then organized by

8th instant advising me that at a
convention of the democratic party
of the 20th senatorial district held
that day in Milledgovillo, I hail
been unanimously nominated for
State Senator tor the ensuing term
of two years, is duly received and
considered.
Distiustful as I am of my own
ability to discharge the duties in
cident to so exalted a station,
fraught with such important in
terests and grave responsibilities,
yet, in view ot the unanimity with
which the nomination is tendered
me, I do not feel ut liberty to de
cline it. Permit me, through you,
to express to the party of this dis
trict my sincere gratitude for ibis
manifestation of confidence and
partiality. And to you gentle
men, individually, I tender my
heartfelt thanks, for the very kind
and courteous manner in which you
notify me of the will of thu con
vention. Should the \ eeple in the
coming election iu October next,
ratify your action, it is proper that
I should briefly outline some ot the
important measures I shall deem it
my duty to advocate.
I shall insist upon a reduction of
taxation so far as is consistent with
the welfare of the government. To
this end, the interest on the indebt

duced to the least practicable rule
