How Watches arc Made.
It will he apparent to any one, who
11 examine a Solid Gold Watch, thill
aside from the accessary thickness for
engraving and polishing a large propor
tion of tho precious metal used, is nee
ded only to stiffen and hold the engrav
ed portions in place, and supply the
necessary solidity and strength. The
surplus gold is actually needless so far
as utility and bounty arc concerned. In
James Boss’ Patent Gold Watch
Cases, this waste of precious metal is
overcome, and the same solidity and
strength produced at from one-third to
one-half of the usual cost of solid cases.
This process is of the most simple na
ture, as follows: A plate of liiokle
(omposition metal, espenially adapted
lo the purpose, has two plates of solid
gold soldered or each side. The three
are then passed between polished steel
rollers, and the result is a strip of heavy
plated composition, from which the
eases, backs, centres, bezels, &c., are
cut apd shaped by suitable dies and for
mers. The gold Jn these eases is suf
ficiently thick to admit of all kinds of
chasing, engraving and enameling ; the
engraved eases have bqeu curried until
worn perfectly smooth by time and use
without removing the gqld.
This is the only case made with two
plates of Solid Quid and warraulpd by
special certificate.
