engraving and polishing a large propor
tion of the precious metal used, is noe-

ed portions in place, and supply the
necessary solidity and strength. The
surplus gold is actually needless so far
ak utility and beauty arc concerned. In

overcome, and .the same solidity and

one-half of tho usual cost of solid cases.
This process is of the most simple na
ture, as follows: A plate of niokle
((imposition metal, especially adapted
o the purpose, has two plates of soljd
gold soldered on inch side. Hie three
are then passed between polished steel
oilers, and the result is a strip of heavy
plated composition, front which the
eases, backs, centres, bezels, &o., nr u
cut and shaped by suitable dj.es and lor?
mers. The gold in these cases is suf
ficiently thick to admit ot all kjijds ot
chasing, cngravjiig and enameling; the
engraved cases have been carried mitR
worn perfectly smooth by time uud use
without removing the gold.
