Deatti 0! Dr. Hamilton.
The announcement a low days
ago that Dr. A. L. Hamilton, pres
ident of Andrew Female College,
Cuthbort, had been stricken with
paralysis, created considerable ap
I prehension in tho minds of' his
friends. A letter from Rev. J. H.
Owen states that the doctor “died
on last evening (Tuesday, the 8th)
at lmif-past seven o’clock. Jle was
never able to speak so as to bo un-
deistood after hewas stricken with
paralysis. Truly a good and great
man is gone—his place will ho hard
to fill, The trustees aro doing nil
they can to keep tho school jntact.
Dr. Hamilton will be. buried to
day at 4 o’clock.”
This is all wo have iu reference
to this calamity which lias befal
len Cuthbort. Undoubtedly the
town has lost one of its best and
most enterprising citizens. Rev
Geo. Geo. 0. Clarke, of Samlers-
villc, went down on Wednesday
to perform the funeral ceremonies,
in response to n request by tele

To tell this ntulioncG hero of tl
incentivo which 1ms prompted
your friends to thus manifest in
this substantial manner, their ap
preciation of your worrit, would
be but to repeat a thrice told tale,
but to yourself it may not be so.
As an old citizen with an oxperi
ence of near 84 years in Snnderr-
ville, I can assure you, without
disparagement to any of your wor
thy predecessors, that no Pastor
oi the Methodist church or any
other church organization, has ev
er gained the affections of our peo
ple generally in a greater degree,
whether members of such organi
zations or not, than you have.
Your erudition, your uniform
courtesy, your hightoned bearing
and more especially your manifes
tation of that broad spirit of oath-
dicity, so characteristic of tho
polished gentleman and the Chris
tian minister; who is so in tho
broadest sense of tho term, has
brougilt about this result.
Take then this souvenir with the
assurance of the continued esteem
and friendship ol tho people of
Stindorsville regardless of creed or
sect. May it serve you in your
declining years as a “rod and staff'
to support you in your physical
walk, ns the faith which you so
beautifully exemplify .is to your
spiritual walk in life. That I, an
adherent to the ancient mosaic
faith, have been selected by our
mutual friends, to be their mouth
piece on this interesting occasion,
is nil outgrowth of that liberality
of sentiment, which you in your
weekly pulpit discourses so prom
inently inculcate upon your con
gregations, and which properly
rests upon that broad basis of all
creeds, by which the Prophet Mal-
uelii acknowledged tho brother
hood of man, when in language
of affection lie exclaimed:
“Have wo n it ail one Father;
hath not one God created us ullf”
hands of royalty; sometimes it was
an ensign of authority, then it was
in the hands of a shepherd. In
many places in the sacred scrip
tures the church is compared to a
sheep-fold, tho saints to sheep, and
the ministers to shepherds, who
must render, at last, an account of
their administration to tho shep
herd and overseer to whom they
owe their authority. Perhaps it
was the intention of our friend:
to revive this scriptural symbol
Or it limy be, as the stall was by

of the outfit, of a minister of the
gospel, our friends intended in thi-
way to supply tho deficiency. But
then it might seem strange that
you should have licon selected fo:
the place you have filled so hand
somcly in these exercises. Allow
tno to say sir, that even with this
intention, their selection is most
appropriate. From your honored
ancestral lino, has been handori
