An Operetta in five acts, was rendered
in Watkins Mali Friday night last by
the “Willing Workers,’’ our amateurs.
The principal actors woro
Little Maud, an orphan, Miss Lettic
Mitchol; Walter Travers, Mr. S. A. H.
Jones; Mrs. St. Clair, wealthy lady
Miss Belle Bangs; Widow Helper, Miss
Mary Lizzie Bayne; Molly Kidder, Miss
Sallied. Davis; Neighbor Green, Miss
Minnie Laveigne; Mr. Grasper, the
Landlord, Mr. John N. Rogers.
Miss Lettio Mitchol appeared as Little
Maud, an orphan, nieceof Mrs. St Clair.
She acted her part splendidly for a new
beginner, her rendition of Nobody’s
Darling was very affecting, her singing
was sweet «nd good still her voico was
too much suppressed, showing excite'
inent. Sleeping beauty was well ron
dored, the receiving and reading the
letter from Walter was fine, in fact all
of her reading’s were excellent, she ar
ticulates clearly and distinctly.
Miss Belle Bangs as Mrs. St. Clair the
wealthy lady, acted her part well. Mr
S. A. II. Jones appeared as Walter Tra
vers. Sebo’s handsome face and noble
physique made his part appear better
than if he had not been so good looking
hut he performed well, his singing was
good. Miss Mary Lizzio Bayne as the
widow Helper was perfectly splendid, all
of her acts were performed with ease
and elegance, showing a great degree of
native talent for tlio stage. She is a sta
performer. The Park scene was bcautir
ful, those pretty little girls appearing
among the fruits nnd flowers and eating
cakes from the pic nic baskets did look
natural und so sweet. Tho little beau
ties were Misses Annie, Jane, May nnd
Carrie Roberts, Mattie Clarke, Mary Gil
more, Mattie nnd Sadie Tarbutton.
The instrumental music by Miss Snllie
Reed Brantley who acted as musical di
rectress was superb, uhe has a flue touch
uid is thorough mistress of tho Piano.
Upon tho whole everybody seemed to
bo delighted with tho success of tho Wil
ing Workers” first appearance on the
stage. There was only one thing to
mar tlio otherwise very pleasant enter
tainment and that was tho rudeness ol
mine of tho boys who done too much np-
plnuding and whistling, and some were
even so rude os to hurrah tho names o
the actors nt tho top of tlieii
voices. Such conduct should be correc

There has long been n great and uni

United States s litablo for genral use.
This want is now being supplied by The
National Publishing Company of Phila
delphia. Pa., Chicago, 111., and St.
Louis, Mo., who have issued a handsome
volume, styled “The Pictorial History
of the United States,” by James D. Me
Cabo, a well-known historical writor.
This work will, undoubtedly, take rank
as the Standard History of tho United
States. It is no dry mass of dentails-no
bombostid effort to inflame tho national
pride, but a clear, vivi'dand brilliant nar-
rative of the events of our history from
the discovery of die American Continent
down to the present time. It traces the
evidences of that mysterious race, the
first occupants of our country, and gives a
most interesting account of the Indiansof
North America, from the the time of the
white men. The voyages of Columbus,
the explorations o tin tlinor*

Every step of our colonial history is
traced with patient fidelity, and the sour
ces of those noble, and we trust, endur-

country free and great, are shown with
remarkable clearness. Ihe causcsof our

A YOUNG LADY SUFFERING FROM A
STRANGE’ HALLUCINATION SEES MANY
STARTLING SIGHTS.
Somerset, Mat'd! 1.—A young
lady of this county, handsome and
educated, getting sick a short time
ago, called in the medical aid of
Dr. George Perkins, who pronoun
ced it the most remarkable case on
record. She often complains of
large balls of human hair that are
thrown against her, and so power
ful is the hold the imagination has
over her mind that large red spots
have made their appearance on that
part of her person where she says
these balls Jof hair strike her.
Again she says that when she clo-
so her eyes great throngs of b ’auti-
ful spirits hover around her bed,
and the most enticing and ravish
ing music lulls her to sleep; but the
very moment she opens her eyes (
the devils, as she calls them, crowd
around her and begin pelting her
with the cruel hair balls. She said
chat lastnight she was crossing a
wide and arid desert and almost
thirsting to death for water with the
hot sunlight parching her face and
body, when an oasis came to view
Green grass fragrant flowers and a
fount greeted her eyes, while sweet
ird notes were wafted to her from
amid perfumed bowers, and just as
she had entcrc 1 the cool 6hade
*nd stopped to slake her thirst in
the fountain, a score of devils came
rooping around and began throw
ing the balls at her, and in a sec
ond all the woodlands had vanished,
leaving her standing alone on the
dreary waste.
The case has attracted great at
tention in the country, and many
persons have been to see the strange
case.—Courier Journal.
