1 or several nights past the moon
Ims pres nteda peculiar appearance.
1 here has been the appearance of
a mock moon partially overlapping
the true moon, now in crescent
shape. •? ^ le u PP ei ’ 1 ,01 ' M8 are join
ed, while the lower ones stand
apart, making a fork. This curious
appearance was first observed five
nights ago by Will Thomas,watch
man at tlio (J. and 0. shaft He
called the attention of the miners
coming oft shift to the moon ."s 1 .-
tng them if tiny saw anything pc-
c*uIui-r about it. After taking n
look the lirst thing each man did
was to rub his eyes and consider
within himself whether or not lie
had at any time within the last
week taken two many glasses of
heei, for lie seemed to he seeing
double. There is not only the
partial doubleness, but a peculiar
bright mist or haze close in aboul
the moon that adds to the perplexi
ty of the observer. Many persons
(among those who nre astir at a
sufficiently bite hour) have been
observing this strange appear
ance of the moon (or several nights.
An amateur astronomer who has
been watching for two nights, gives
it as his opinion that the moon is
“growing” on utmosphere. lie
says the bogus moon lias precisely
the same appearance ofa reflection
of the true moon cast out into a
bright haze. He believes that a
part of the tail of comet has boon
.atraded to nud settled around tin
moon, forming a thin gaseous at
mosphere. The first impression
ol everyone in looking at the moon
is that the,e is something wrong
with his eyes- that they are misty.
Old and young, however, find the
same appearance,,an,l make the

Dear Me: The Wise Men of Geor
gia will probably be in session for at
least 3 weeks more. We attempted this
morning to decide upon an adjournment
day but after several gas bags Imd ex
ploded we agreed to disagree. We woi k
ourselves nearly to death, (two sessions a
day,) and still the people say we arc
doing nothing. Mrs. Franklin, after a
3 weeks sojourn at Gainesville in whet
ting up tier appetite, has got this far
back home. I get through eating and
have to sit for half an hour fanning her
while she finishes her meals. It won’t
do for a poor man to send his family to
Gainesville, particularly such years ns
this. The Washington county delegate:
and their wives dined yesterday with
Judge It. L. Rogers, 1 am happy to
say that tlie Judge is working himself
into a fine legal practice, which lie just
ly deserves. Tlio Washington Repre
sentatives voted solid on yesterday for
the starting of a new Capitol, hut the
Bill shared the same ill fate that all ap
propriation Bills suffer, killed too dead
to skin. A Bill to appropriate $10,000
totlioDahlonega College passed theHouse
(for a wonder) this morning. I had the
pleasure of meeting Miss Sallie D. of
Sandersville on yesterday evening, she
is stopping with Mr. and Mrs. A. A. i.
formerly of Sandersville. I am sorry 1
could not he at home just before the
Mayor’s election, I lmve missed several
good punches. Col. LeeW, who has
been with us several days, has departed
for other parts, gone home to vote I
spose. Senator J. has gone home to
sow turnips and to vote for Mayor. A
bevy of young ladies from Washington
Co., in charge of Miss Julia W. went
up to Gainesville last Saturday evening
to enter the Seminary of Prof. Wilkes.
The Bill for the Penitentiary Cominis'
sion was killed by the Senate, and sa
ble aspirants will have to retire.
