DOES IT IIUKT TRADE !
The ed'ect of Prohihlton on the
Business mid ltloriils of
Acworth.
Much has been said and written
about the effect of prohibition on the
trade of the community where it pre
vails.
Acworth is one of the oldest prohi
bition towns in the state, lienee her
testimony is relevant to the issue.
Business increased and was trans
acted more satisfaetornly. A great
many men who were addicted to drink
beenmc more prompt and reliable.
The loafers that lay around the drink
ing places (ofwhom there were ninny)
disappeared with the saloons and
went to work. Acworth has no loaf
ers, no thiuvps, no vagabonds or any
thing to deter or molest Indies who
may be on the streets alone, even af
ter iqglit.
Now for some figures or statistics:
We will make our comparisons be
tween the lust five years of license
and the ft rat five of prohibition.
Wo will first look at our cotton re
ceipts.
The average in rend numbers, for
the five licensed years were .1,500
bales, nnd for the five years of no li
cense 0,100 bales. The last year of
license 3,100 bales, nnd the first year
of no license 5,000 bales.
The last five license years, the town
authorities' collected bo license, fines
and taxations about $1,250 a year,
made no permanent improvements on
the streets and came out in debt. Tin
first five no license years was collect
ed from all sources about $125 a year,
several hundred ynyds of street was
inaeadeniizod and all debts paid.
•During the las; year of license
Messrs, M. M. AC. Phillips leased
for seven year two large brick store
rooms for $125 a year, for which they
could have gotten three times as
much after license, was denied.
Before our good people determined
to overtefow the liquor traffic a large
proportion of our citizens belonged
to no church, but before the license
system bad been abolished a year,
nearly all our people became members
of the churdh, By prohibition, busi
ness was made better, the morals of
our community greatly improved and
the cause of Christ built up.
Acworth, oa., Jan,. (0, 1884.—We
whose names arc hereto subscribed,
lo testify that by the abolishing of
the liquor traffic the trade of our
town was benefitted, the morals of the
community improved, and the church
of Christ built up. Children that
went barefooteod, now have shoes
and those that cried for bread now
have both bread and meat.
