A farmer, Mr. Dave Hill, living
near the Jones county line, came in
to town nnd reported that ho had
heard one of Clark’s speeches, and
liis talk became so offensive that Mr.
Hill interrupted him and protested
against any such talk to the negroes;
but Clark kept on, and advised them
to rise to a man and kill the white
men, outrage tho women and slay all
the male children. Ho said General
Grant was his security for $15,000
or $40,000 or any other amount; that
40,000 troops and car loads of artil
lery would be at Sandersville on the
pistol’March, and it was at that
place that all the negroes must go
pnd meet him. They must not stop
to think of what had been (lone for
them by the white peoplev they had
been sleeping over their rights for
eighteen years, and he was there to
tell them what their lights were,
pnd no white man dared to arrest
him.
At Friendship he made another of
his speaches, and a few white men
secreted themselves and heard all
they said. On Thursday night lie
Bpoke in tho woods near l’itt’s Chap
fcl in Jones county, and came near
being arrested. Sheriff Ennis and a
'few white men were present and
heard him. The Sheritf wanted to
pirrest him, and made his way
through the crowd for that purpose,
but Clarke sawjhim and leaped front
the stump on which lie had been stan
ding and ran. The sheriff fired at
him but failed to. hit him. He man
aged to make good his escape.
