I he occasion was one of rare in
Lorcst to the many friends of the
Academy, who by tlu-ir presence,
manifested their appreciation of the
manner in which the school was con
ducted. A sumptuous dinner as
well as also supper, was served upon
the grounds. The orator of tlio day,
Col. Ik I). Evans, addressed tho au
dience with a few remarks, urging
the importance of education ; cspcc
ially the education that raises man
to that high standard which Pope
describes as “the noblest work of
God.” The examinations in the day
was followod by a concert at night,
consisting of recitations, declama
tion,s and charades. Dr. R. of this
city, contributed no little to the en
tc-rtiiinment of the day by bis excel
lent performance upon tiie violin.
The prizes were awarded by Mr. Ik
!). Evans, Jr. at tho conclusion ol
the exercises.
Those present will long remain but
tho day, as one of festivity and pleas
ure. That genial citizen, Mr. Al.
was very particular that all present
should have dinner, and it was no
fault of liis if they did not leave
the ground fuller, if not wiser men.
'The rapid advancement of the pupils
under Mr. Bateman’s tutelage lias
Lhouroughly demonstrated Ids oap-

We trust the frionds and patrons of
of the Academy will sustain the
school by their continued patronage,
and venture the assertion that if
they sustain the school, Arr. Bate
